Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa

We have stayed in almost all of the hotels in and around Lake Windemere over the past 11-12 years. The Old England whilst ideally placed is not the best of them, though the service was tops.
The staff are great, mostly east Europeans with great charm and respect. Now for the not so good stuff, small rooms, no balcony or outside seating area like the Beech Hill where you can sit outside your room overlooking the lake whilst enjoying a glass of vino. Rooms are small , and noise from upstairs rooms not good if they have kids running around all night, but pleasant enough.
No fridge in the room which I find very strange in this day and age.....
Food not up to some of the other hotels, but supposed to be one of the best no Michelin star here.......also wine cheap and nasty and well overpriced, wine buyer must be on a kickback....Cheap and nasty sauce on breakfast menu......bought in bulk from Aldi? Beech Hill wins hands down again, but apart from the food was a nice stay only because of the staff and the service, would we come again....not sure.........

Room Tip: Lake rooms have a good view

Just returned from a 1 night weekend stay. Excellent hotel, rooms and service. Meal in restaurant is expensive if not included in a dinner bed and breakfast rate portions are small as well. Spa excellent although it might have been an idea to have slippers to go with the dressing gown instead or being expected to walk around barefoot

We had a Couples Spa day and it was the first time either of us had visited a Spa but it was fantastic! The reception staff of both the hotel and the spa were extremely helpful. The Spa facilities were very clean and luxurious. When we arrived, the relaxation room was empty which was lovely, but after our massage, it was full with only one seat left for us to share- not the most relaxing. The couples massage was great, the only thing to complain about was that the staff spoke to you separately and this was confusing-particularly as they were saying the same thing. There was an ice room, sauna and steam room- no Jacuzzi that we could find that was slightly disappointing. I felt the pool was cold and the steam room had no steam...! My dressing gown had a broken belt, and there was only one pair of slippers available when we checked in. When we were in the pool the staff came round with spare towels which was a nice touch. After the Spa experience we had lunch in the lounge room. It was included in the Spa package, but a tuna sandwich and glass of champagne was priced at £15 on the menu- overpriced compared to others in the location, but would have been worth the money. The best part were the views of the lake. The staff in the lounge were very polite. After visiting for one day, we have decided that we would like to stay on our return to Windermere!

From the moment we arrived wew were warmly welcomed, parking arranged and shown to our rooms. The staff could not do enough! The spa is first rate and extremely clean. Breakfast was fantastic with lots of choice and excellent waitress service. We would definitely recommend this hotel for a short break to anyone who wants to get away from it all for a few days.

Room Tip: We suggest getting a room with a view.

Staying at the All Season Guest House in Winderemere, but able to use the hotels facilities. Great Spa, with decent size pool, which at the time we arrived around Tuesday @ 3.00pm was reasonably quiet, but then around 4.00pm, started to get a little busier. Lovely steam room and sauna also ice room. (a little too cold for us though!!) Decided to sit in the bar area afterwards and have a coffee, (Costa!! The best) amazing views over looking the lake. Beautiful decor around the hotel, may consider staying here, at some point in the future. Thank you to all.

Came here for a spa day with a group of friends. Thoroughly enjoyed our day. Lovely decor throughout the spa and the relaxation room is just bliss. Friendly welcome and good treatment with lovely Elemis products. The lunch provided with champagne was excellent.

My only suggestion would be perhaps some more seating around pool area. We had nowhere to sit as was quite full so didn't stay in for long. Also was left quite a while on treatment bed before it began. I can see a hot tub out on that balcony also ;-)

Would come again

Stayed here over the weekend. Booked through travel republic, but was a bit of a pain, as they had not got the rooms once booked, and had to ring 4 times to clarify things were right. and we still ended up paying more (301 pound for two b and b fri and sat.)
It was my sisters silver wedding, so was a treat.
The hotel was lovely, and valet parking, rooms were a little on the small side. Lovely bed linen, coffee, tea, and water. Some rooms priced at over 500 pounds though!. Staff lovely, food good, bacon a little thin, and small portion of beans, eggs cooked how you like, black pudding and toast and fried bread and tomato. The continental buffet was exceptional any cereal, meat, juice, yoghurt, fruit, so you wouldn't go hungry! Would stay here again.

Room Tip: Our double was bigger than an executive room and just as nice! and cheaper!
