“Classy Birthday Break”
Reviewed 24 February 2014

Stayed at the Old England Hotel to celebrate my wife's birthday from 20th to 22nd February. The location is ideal, on the banks of Lake Windermere in Bowness itself..
From the moment we arrived, nothing was too much trouble, Check-in was completed in a friendly and efficient manner and our car valet parked in the hotels car park nearby.
We stayed in Room 222, a Feature Suite which was, clean, spacious and very comfortable with a view over the lake to watch the boats and wildlife go by like a screensaver. The suite was very well equipped with a large comfortable bed, couch and two chairs to relax on. A television in each of the room sections as well as a fridge and coffee maker. The complementary tea, coffee, water and shortbread were replenished both in the morning and during the evening turn-down service. We found the pillows a little too soft but that's just our personal preference.
The large bathroom was ideal with plenty of hot water for the shower and bath and lovely soft towels and robes,
We had pre-booked the evening meal so ate at the hotel that night, made with local ingredients, it was absolutely delicious. The service was relaxed and professional, although a little background music would have helped the ambiance.

Breakfast the next two mornings matched the previous nights high standards. We were quickly shown to our table looking out over the lake, the order for tea coffee and toast were taken before we helped ourselves from an extensive selection of fruit, cereals juices etc. The Full English was served piping hot and set us up for the day.

As we relaxed in our room on our second day, I answered a knock on the door which brought two glasses of champagne and chocolates, a very welcome Birthday treat, complements of the Hotel Thank you.
We had every intention of using the swimming pool and gym but ran out of days on such a short break in such a lovely part of the world, there is always next time
Check-out was completed as efficiently as our arrival and our car brought to the front door, a very welcome touch as the rain came down.
Overall a very relaxing stay at what is obviously a well run hotel in an ideal location.
Yes some of the drinks prices are a bit steep but there is a wide variety of places to eat and drink nearby. We can thoroughly recommend the Hole in t'wall pub and Jintana Thai restaurant both are only a short walk from the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the lake/ garden, not the town

my partner and i stayed for 3 nights last week feb 17th. this is a really lovely hotel right by lake windermere. we got a winter warmer break which works out about half price. but the room was quite small with no view, just a small window at the top which you had to stand on the window sill to see out of! that is my only gripe but maybe you get what you pay for? the staff and service here are outstanding and a credit to the hotel. they cant do enough for you and always with a smile. car valeting too! i would stay here again most def if i could have aroom with a view :-)

Room Tip: room 219 no view

My wife and I, visited the Old England for a Spa Day on Friday 21st February 2014. The Spa facilities and treatment, were excellent, followed by a champagne lunch. We would definitely recommend. First class treatment and service throughout, and nothing was too much trouble. Many thanks. Kevin

While the hotel is nicely located on the lake the rooms a very small and musty. We stayed on the 2nd floor and the bottom of the window was approximately 6 feet high so you had to climd up to see daylight. This resulted in a musty feel in the room which left it feeling very dated. Also the shower was intermittent. On the morning we checked out you could only have one temperature setting which was like boiling water. If we turned down the temperature of the water the water supply just stopped. Completely unusable. Normally I'm not too fussy when travelling but it was the high cost of the room which really made the room quality difficult to understand. Maybe if we could see out the window that might have helped to justify it.

Whilst you found the location of the hotel to be ideally situated on the shores of the lake it was disappointing to hear that you did not find the room suitable during your stay. As a historic building we have many different styles of room with no two being the same. Each room type is categorised into five different standards which we hope offers our guest the right level of choice to select the most suitable room. We hope the pictures on our website reflect this choice. It was regrettable to see that you were affect by some water supply issues during your stay. Thankfully these isolated issues were resolved by our engineers once we were made aware.
I do hope we have the opportunity to welcome you back to the area soon.

We stayed in room 23 for a birthday celebration - just beautiful and so spacious. Great room, super comfy bed and spectacular views. A great room for a special occasion. Staff were brilliant particularly Paul who offered great help to another couple in our party.
The hotel is a traditional English hotel, right in the heart of Bowness. The spa facilities were lovely and we enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere.
Breakfast was superb, more choice than you can imagine and no need to eat for the rest of the day! Service was great too with nothing too much trouble for anyone.
Only downside is what other reviewers have picked up on and that's the price of drinks in the hotel bar. Having said that the quaint and traditional atmosphere are inviting and welcoming. There are many bars and eateries a plenty all within a very short distance away.
Excellent stay and I'd highly recommend. We are now hooked on the Macdonald chain and hope to book in Manchester in March
Thank you

Room Tip: Room 23....high end but arguably the best room in the hotel.

From the moment we arrived we were warmly welcomed. Nice rooms and very good service, food was fantastic with lots of choice . i would definitely recommend this hotel for a short break to anyone who wants to get away from it all for a few days.

Room Tip: No fridge in the room which I find very strange in this day

I couldn't really find fault with this hotel. After a long drive, the valet parking was much appreciated. The staff couldn't have been more helpful - happy to organise all of our luggage to be taken up to our room, which was great with a 4 year old. Huge room with an extra bed for my daughter, with fridge and enormous bathroom with separate bath and shower. Pool and spa facilities absolutely fantastic, although a bit busy during the times that kids are allowed to swim (it is half term!). We went out for dinner (loads of hotels with a 5 min walk) but breakfast was amazing. A lovely hotel with great staff.
