Amazing location, amazing service, amazing food, sitting in the bar watching the sun go down over the lake is just fantastic. The staff were fantastic, we stayed with 2 kids & they couldn't do enough for us. Particular credit to the staff at breakfast. Would we stay again? You bet.

Room Tip: If you can get a view of the lake all the better.

We stay here every time we visit Bowness, can't fault it. Lovely rooms, get a view! Great food and drink. The bar is lovely the whole hotel has a feel of opulence. Staff are really helpful. Great spa and pool. Highly recommended! Couples, families or whoever wants a break.

The Old England Hotel has the most wonderful setting on the side of Lake Windermere. The welcome and friendliness of the staff are as good as you will find.

The first room we were given was in the attic and had, we were told, recently been refurbished. Floor area wise you could play 5 a-side football in it .... but it did not have proper windows. It had 2 Velux windows on the sloping roof, one of which was fixed shut. The view of the lake was beautiful but only if you are over 6ft tall or stand on the furniture to see out. We asked for an alternative room and the reception was happy to oblige. This new room was on the landward side and was smaller but a fine size for a family. It was however extremely warm. We turned off the radiator and opened the window when we went in and it stayed that way for the whole of our stay. This room was perfectly comfortable but needed a bit of TLC. There was a cracked tile in the middle of the ensuite which had been patched with mastic but still had a rough edge. There are areas of stains on the ceilings and walls where there has obviously been water ingress. The TV remote battery cover wouldn't stay on. The safe in the cupboard was missing a battery. None of this is a great issue but for a 4 star, "Signature" hotel you would expect better. The Spa was super and we thoroughly enjoyed the pool.

The restaurant has great panoramic views of the lake and is a fine setting for a meal. We had a very nice dinner there on our first night. It is not cheap but the food was high quality. The breakfasts were also very good.

The overall feel is one of a slightly tired country house. It was very beautiful but not slick. It wouldn't put us off staying again but perhaps we'd go in with slightly tempered expectations.

Stayed here in Feb during one of those bleak times we had this winter, they hotel was very welcoming good effort from the valet parking in all the wind and rain.

Good bar area and breakfast was excellent, rooms are very comfortable, we were in what appeared to be the annexe or newer block.

The leisure area really wasn't up to much, sauna and steam room not working as I would expect but this could have been a blip

Overall a nice place to stay NOT CHEAP and not really setting itself above what it should be.

Would I stay again - yes I would but I would also look to see what else could at least match it first.

We stayed here in March 2014, the hotel is gorgeous, staff very helpful and views amazing. We stayed in a lake view room, which we would highly recommend. Food is very good. This has become our regular hotel when we visit Bowness.

We arrived on a Friday to be warmly greeted by reception staff, we were concerned about where to park but that very quickly disappeared with the appearance of the valet and then concierge who after ensuring we had removed all our luggage took it to a secure compound for parking over the weekend, great start. Due to arriving early we were offered a room to store our luggage, the luggage was later put into our room when it was ready and there when we arrived to officially book in. The room (316) was spacious, fantastic views over the lake with the private boats in front and the main cruises that run to the far left. The room was tidy, clean and felt comfortable, the bed was massive :-). All staff whenever we walked past offered a warm greeting, any staff we asked for help were very courteous, polite and informative. we were staying for 2 nights, Breakfast was an absolute delight with full English accompanies by toast, cereal, fruit, pastries etc, very filling and could not be faulted, staff in the restaurant were as all other staff had been.. excellent. We used the spa for a treatment and that was of the same high standards as the hotel and was superb. We departed on Sunday having had a thoroughly enjoyable weekend and have rebooked to go later in the year, the location makes this the number one hotel as its right on the front of Lake Windermere and I have no hesitation to recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: ask for a room with uninterrupted view of the lake which had windows running the whole width of the...
