Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Enjoy a serene day out at the most enchanting historic houses in the Lake District. When you visit you are invited to relax and immerse yourself in all the beauty and craftsmanship of Blackwell. We encourage you to sit and soak up the atmosphere in Blackwell’s fireplace inglenooks, which have fine examples of tiles by Arts & Crafts designer William de Morgan. The inviting window seats offer stunning views of the surrounding Lake District scenery. You can appreciate the house as it was originally intended, without roped-off areas. Blackwell retains many of its original decorative features, including a rare hessian wall-hanging in the Dining Room, leaf-shaped door handles, curious window catches, spectacular plasterwork, stained glass and carved wooden panelling by Simpsons of Kendal. The rooms contain furniture and objects by many of the leading Arts and Crafts designers and studios.

What a stunning house and a view that is magnificent! A fantastic Arts and Crafts house so tastefully done and well worth a visit, I want to go back already! Such stunning architecture and furniture and what a grand job the builder's did in the renovation of the property. I could have stood looking at the Ruskin sketches for ever, even as I type I am reminding myself of all the wonderful objects I have seen. A delightful tea room where we had a cuppa and a very impressive gift shop, if only I had lots of money I could have bought so many gorgeous things. Well worth a visit if you can find it, not very well signposted. Will definitely go again.

Thank Anne F

A rainy day in Windermere and our friend suggested that we go to this beautiful arts and crafts house. The layout of the house, the wood panelling, the original features, the furniture. All of it was quite stunning. We had a question which I would have thought was quite a reasonable question about one of the fireplaces which nobody could answer. That was disappointing. I found the children running around inappropriate. At one point I was sure that part of the dinner service was going to be broken. Having somebody in the rooms could have answered questions and asked parents to keep their children in check. And yes, I do have children but would never have brought them at a young age to such an adult building.

A stunning arts and crafts edifice with original decor, stained glass and views over Lake Windermere. It's had an interesting life as a lakeland getaway for a worthy Manchester family then later a school. Unlike many historic houses, you are welcome to sit in the window alcoves and take in the view. The provenance of the construction, decoration and upstairs/downstairs divisions are outlined in information panels. A well stocked shop and cafe are sited in the old staff quarters.

If you like 'arts & crafts', this house is a must visit! The architectural vision is truly beautiful, and the setting is gorgeous. The also have exhibits of different types, related to the 'arts & crafts movement'. We loved it!
