Been to the lakes for a weekend and stayed at the hydro hotel, staff very friendly and helpful, lovely bar and communal areas on the ground floor. The view from our room (49) was stunning we couldn't stop looking out over the lake and the mountains! Very close to shops and lake. Breakfast was delicious!
The games room was dark and eery and could definitely do with a makeover!
Could get tiring walking up the steep hill to the hotel also.
Overall very pleased with our stay will definitely be returning in the new year!!

Just arrived home from running a weekend residential course as the hydro. A hotel with character, where the service is second to none, pleasant staff, plentiful food, fantastic position overlooking Lake Windermere. A family owned gem in the heart of the lake district, a nice change from the contemporary hotel chains. Will b back next year.

Lask week I ran a 3 day intensive Leadership course for UK researchers, a big operational ask for a hotel. As an organiser, having the support of the hotel and the hotel staff is essential in ensuring the course runs smoothly and on time - and that is exactly what was delivered. The hotel staff are accommodating, always willing to help at any stage of the day; the catering provided is simply first class; and the facilities have more character that a Warner Brother's film set.

- If you are looking for a good base to set off on your hiking trip - the hotel is right in the middle of bowness, so access to the nearest walks are in close proximity
- If you are looking either for a romantic getaway - the views from the hotel are jaw-dropping, and the suite rooms are very cosy.
- If you are looking to run an event - the hotel is incredibly accommodating and staff are competent and always willing to help!

Michael

Room Tip: The suite rooms at the front have fantastic views of the lake!

I recently stayed at the Hydro for a leadership training course, and in my opinion the hotel staff were not at all happy or adequately prepared to host a large event. If you need a conference venue, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! On check in, several of us asked about dinner that evening, and were bizarrely told "it's not free for you lot you know" in a tone which implied that we were penniless blaggers trying to get a free meal, rather than professionals who would like to purchase something to eat. I personally would have happily purchased dinner in the hotel restaurant if it hadn't been for this extremely rude comment, so like many others, I spent my money on dinner elsewhere.
A colleague had a similar experience at the bar: the bar would not take a card payment, so I overheard my colleague ask if she could charge the price of a drink to her room and pay on checkout. The response from the teenage barman was incredible: "you students can't charge stuff to your rooms because you always leave without paying", or words to that effect! This is a bizarre way to talk to a guest, assuming that a thirty-something professional woman was a student trying to steal free drinks from the establishment.
Similar incidents arose for many of the people I talked to, which was rather self-defeating for the hotel: I personally was considering a Lake District venue for a work retreat later in the year, and I now think that any venue I pick has to be better than this! We all agreed that we may come back to the area for holidays, and would resolutely avoid the Hydro when doing so.

Lovely old hotel in a great location. The hotel is well decorated and maintained with a nice bar and good communal rooms on the ground floor. There is a swimming pool but unfortunately this time we did not get the chance to use it. Dinner and breakfast both very good. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, we will certainly return.

This hotel is full of character, the minute I walked through the door I could imagine how it was in it's hay day. Indeed, it could be described as 'tired', but this in no way detracts from it's charm. My room was lovely, perfectly clean, well decorated, great view over Windermere. The staff were very helpful indeed, nothing was too much trouble. The pool, jacuzzi and sauna were great, the views from the gym are spectacular. The hotel is in a perfect position for walking down a small hill into Bowness, and all it's shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. We had dinner in the restaurant, I had Guinea Fowl, it was perfect! The service was brilliant, again the staff were excellent. It's a great place, I'm a bit of a fusspot, but this hotel charmed the socks off me! I'll definitely go back.
