Windermere Hydro Hotel
Reviewed 12 April 2013

We recently returned to the Hydro for just one night, having stayed for a 4 night stay in September last year and I have to say that there is something about this hotel, it seems to have grown on me! I wasn't sure after our first stay that I would ever go back and now I know that I will.

It is true that the hotel could do with some refurbishment, but then in a way the faded grandeur adds to it's charm. The room we stayed in most recently was light and airy with high ceilings and a nice view of the lake. It's true that the bathroom tiles look like they date from the late 1970's but these days there are some that would call them vintage! On this occasion I was quite charmed by the retro decor besides that it was quite refreshng to have a proper shower (not an electric one), with good enough pressure to wash my hair! It was also nice to have the choice of bath or shower...

Other pros: The bed linen was good quality and the bed very comfortable. The location of the hotel is great, walking distance to lots of pubs, restaurants and the lake. There is a large car park if you are arriving by car. There is also a swimming pool though I didn't use it. The staff are pleasant and helpful, without being over bearing.

Cons: Breakfast is buffet style, so not cooked fresh, but with a hotel of this size that is to be expected. The TV was too small really for the size of the room. As noted above many people would say that a refurbishment is overdue - if you like minimalist modernism this place is not for you! If you can get over that and accept this place for what it is and all the character it has to offer, you may just learn to love it...

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the lake.

my wife and i booked for two nights over the easter weekend. From the moment we arrived we were met by a warm and friendly receptionist who any hotel would like to have. We had booked a room with a lake view and when we saw our room we weren't disappointed. a clean spacious bedroom with the comfiest bed we both had ever slept in. The bathroom was very clean and modern with both a shower and a bath that could quite easily accommodate myself and the wife.We would have both regretted it if we hadn't had a bath together to try it out. We booked to have an evening meal and the food was exceptional. Helpful, friendly, restaurant staff along with wonderful food made or first nights stay excellent. This is just what we needed after a slow drive up in busy easter traffic. The following morning we had breakfast which again was excellent. We used the leisure facilities and they were clean and well presented. When we woke up on the second morning we both decided we didnt want to go home yet so we booked to stay for a third night. In fact we could of stayed longer but work commitments meant we had to sadly leave this wonderful place. We both said we will return to this hotel as soon as we can.

Room Tip: Lake view room is a must.

My husband booked this literally at the last minute for an overnight stay for us both. On first impressions this is a very old building with tired and dated looking decor - so if you are expecting modern you are going to be disappointed. But please don't let this put you off. The staff are professional, welcoming and treat you respectfully. The food is very good although a little pricey but it was a treat so for a one off it wasn't to bad. Breakfast is buffet style with plenty to set you up for the day ahead. The bedroom was basic, again dated and tired decor and pictures, but had everything you need. So, despite its tired appearance, there is something quite special about this hotel. It is full of history and you can feel this - you can imagine the people who have lived there in the past (I would go so far as to say some of them are still there in spirit as it is quite spooky in parts!) Every corridor reveals something and there are rooms everywhere. The rooms at the front of the hotel have amazing views of the lake and the hills. Please take the hotel for the beautiful old building that it is and enjoy the quality service that you receive - this more than makes up for the lack of corporate image hotel appearance. Enjoy!

We stayed for 2 nights, a Friday and a Saturday. The room was large and clean, a little dated, but nice enough. The lady on reception was lovely - she allowed us breakfast served to our room for no extra cost! This arrived promptly and was very nice!

The pool and jacuzzi were clean fab, and the long opening hours a bonus! Very quiet too which was nice.

Location of the hotel is ideal and has a largeish carpark which is much needed in the town!

Overall, a great trip and would stay again!

Staff friendly and efficient. Decor and furnishings need updating. Our bedroom looked very old fashioned but did seem to have been refurbished. But the drapes and bedspread were very heavy and very dated. Absolutely fantastic bathroom. Very modern, bright and beautifully designed. But the hot water in the shower didn't actually get beyond tepid and, after being out in the cold outdoors all day, I really do want a hot shower! Also there is no light over the mirror and I found it difficult to see to put my make-up on at night. Similarly the mirror over the dressing table was unlit and too far away to be of any use! Breakfast just alright. Self-service and sufficient. Evening meal wasn't as delicious as the menu suggested. Rather disappointing on the whole. As there were only about 6 tables occupied there was little atmosphere and it was difficult to hold a private conversation. Swimming pool small and in a separate building. Even with 4 people using it it looked crowded. Lots of rooms with comfy sofas and chairs but many needed reupholstering and some appeared stained. Probably very tasteful when first decorated but sorely needs a revamp. Although there were fires burning to cheer the rooms the hotel was cold and we went to our room early rather than lingering in the bar as we felt chilly. I think that he g hotel would benefit from a total refurbishment. This may have already started as the bathroom suggests. Continue the modernisation and the hotel would be much more attractive and welcoming.

Room Tip: We were fortunate in being allocated a room at he front of the hotel and had a beautiful view of Win...
