Windermere Hydro Hotel
Reviewed 22 August 2013

my partner and i had a few days off so we looked on laterooms.comm and the windermere hydro hotel came up as a place with a indoor pool which we had requested. we read some of the recent reviews and they were very mixed some good and some not so. We decided to book and we arrived early evening after a little ride around bowness looking for the hotel. It is up a rather steep road but we managed very well to walk up and down (and i was on crutches, so it took us a little longer than most people, about 10mins max). the hotel on arrival looked very nice, we parked the car in the lower car park and there are a set of quite steep steps back up, or you could do what we did and walk up the ramp. the reception staff were very friendly and helpful we had a room on the second floor and there was a good lift to all floors. the room was very large and clean the bed was a king size and we over looked the lake which was brilliant. the bathroom was the biggest we had ever seen in a hotel and had been re furbished recently the bath was big enough for two? the walls had been tastefully tiled and there was a separate large shower. we went to the indoor pool, which is located by the side of the hotel and down the metal steps, remember to ask for the door code as this is needed to enter. the changing room is quite small there are a few changing rooms and lockers and showers. the pool is aprox 10 metres but very nice and clean the spa pool was nice and clean but the sauna was not on when we stayed. we had the pool to our selves two afternoons which was very nice. the food at breakfast was very good, you are served tea or coffee then you go in to a side room for cereals and cooked food, toast etc.We ate down in bowness two nights and on the last night we booked a table at the hotels restaurant, which was very nice and reasonable The hotel as a whole looks a little tired and in need of a makeover in places, if you look closely but if you look past this and remember how old the building is, its a good place to stay. And the family who now own it are trying to up grade things like double glazing and new bathrooms going in If we have to say anything bad about this hotel, we probably have to say the floor boards in our room creaked badly when you walked to the bathroom, ( so sorry if you were below us we did try to tip toe) we would still recommend this to family and friends as a very good place to stay as a base to explore the lakes, at a very reasonable price.

Room Tip: we were on the second floor at the front so had a brill view of the lake from two large windows in t...

I apologise for my delay in writing this review...! In March 2013 I booked My parents for a 2 night stay with evening meal via 'livingsocial deals'.
My father became unwell and had to return home after one night. The staff were very understanding and agreed to keep the second night for when he was feeling better. Which they did without any problem. It was very kind and something that I expect not many hotels would do.
My parents have reported that the food was brilliant and the room had a great view of the lake.
They would love to return

Room Tip: I understand the hotel is gradually upgrading the rooms so ask for an already upgraded room

Visited this hotel from the 9th -12th August for my sister-in-laws 60th birthday party. Rooms comfy and plenty of hot water, windows opened to let air in as quite warm Staff very friendly and very helpful service good and food delicious. Private party on the sat. night which did finish by 12.30!! If going to the lakes again I would stay there again.

Room Tip: ask for room with balcony lake views fantastic.

Booked a two night stay. The Hotel décor is very tired and shabby. Our room was on the first floor and smelled of damp. We chose this hotel because of the swimming pool yet on inspection it did not look very clean and was in a separate building to the hotel, not at all inviting. Our room was directly over the ballroom and we could hear the music as though it was in our room "Build me up buttercup" and "show me the way to Amararillo" along with the running commentary from the DJ. When we spoke to the night porter he said he thought was acceptable and the party would finish at 12.30. The manager offered to move us rooms at 11.30. The party did not finish until 1.30am Would not stay at this hotel again despite the apology from the manager and the compensation given.

Room Tip: Book elsewhere.

We stayed at the Hydro Hotel for just 2 nights but it was an enjoyable stay. There were lots of people from other countries / cultures there. Unusually for the Lake District there was a large car park with ample parking. The hotel was clean and comfortable although a little "tired". The staff were all friendly and helpful AND there was a pool!
The food was good although as a previous review said, there was no atmosphere.
We arrived on a hot day and unfortunately the window didn't open and there was no fan.

Room Tip: Ask fora room with a balcony!

My partner and I stayed for one night at the Hydro it was a last minute decision and so our options were limited but the price was ok and it seemed to suit our needs, The hotel is quite large and somewhat sprawling, we were on the second floor and our room was up several flights of stairs as the lift did not go the the place were our room was located. Definately not one for elderly or infirm guests.
The room was small but adequate and clean, altough there was a smell of damp in the corridors leading to it. There was a small and very dated TV in the room and enough tea supplys for one cup each. A note advised that more milk etc could be purchased at reception for a small charge. We went down and purchased a drink in the bar which we took outside as it was a nice evening and we sat enjoying the view which was very nice.
The following morning we came down for breakfast which is served from 8:30 to 9:30am. The food was a buffet style self service, it was plentiful with lots to choose from and the quality was good. To conclude I would describe the hotel as being cheap and cheerful with an air of fading grandure ok for a night or two but I would not want to take a weeks holiday here.

Room Tip: Try and get a room at the front overlooking the lake

Living locally to the lakes we don't stay over as much as we should to enjoy the relaxed nightlife and culture of Bowness, so it was on the spur of the monent that we looked for a room at an hours notice for the weekend (mid July heatwave).

So what do you need, a comfy bed (check), hot shower (check), plentyful delcious breakfast (check), free parking and great central location (100yds hill accepted). Go on what else?

The Hydro was exactly what we needed.

Yes the place has character, nothing £10million wouln't sort, bt its charming in a way. Just don't watch "The Shining" the night before you stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony as the views are spectular!
