My partner booked this as a surprise for my 30th birthday and paid £110 per night for 2 nights. We arrived on Friday evening and the hotel was deserted of staff but fortunately as we've stayed twice before we knew where the buzzer was located.
The staff member was very friendly although I was shocked when we were asked to pay the remainder of our bill upfront. This obviously did not happen.
We were shown to room 15 which was also a lovely and picturesque.
Unfortunately as soon as we stepped into the room the smell was not so lovely. We were greeted with a smell that was sweaty and musty. We narrowed it down to the bathroom. My partner informed the staff when we went out half an hour later. We were told that they went and put some odouriser in the bathroom and the window was left open.
On our return the bathroom still smelt very bad and we had to sleep with the window open which meant we were woken very early by traffic.
At breakfast we told the same staff member about the smell and told we could change room. As we had arrangements made we told them we couldn't do this at the time and would on our return to the hotel.
On returning later in the day we spoke to another staff member who said all the rooms were now taken so basically we had to put up with our smelly room.
The staff member came to smell our room and although she admitted to having a blocked nose she could still smell the sweatiness. More odour neutraliser was used and a plumber was offered how ever this would mean we were tied to staying in the room awaiting this and we couldn't have used the bathroom to shower in the meantime. The staff member said the owner was not present (and wasn't throughout our stay) but she would bring it to their attention. She also said they'd previously had plumbing issues.
The following morning at breakfast none of the staff bothered to ask about our smelly room nor did they offer any discount, gesture of goodwill or even an apology. The subject was not raised at all.
Although the breakfast was very nice and the room itself was great, the bathroom was tiny snd anyone with a weight issue would have trouble using the toilet in the space it was in.
The decoration needed updating, it hasn't changed in the last couple of years and for a five star I don't expect gouges in the wall and bird poo from the sky light on the bannister.
Very very disappointed and will not be returning. We have stayed in the lakes many times and know much nicer hotels and b&b's that are better value and staff with better managerial skills. Sadly for us these were booked up.
