“Lovely break”
Reviewed 25 September 2013

Our children had booked "woodlands" for a surprise mini break to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. On arrival we were shown around the property, and to our room, which was room 16 located in the court yard, which was the room we were hoping for, and is the four poster room in the pictures. We also had a bottle of sparkling wine and chocolates waiting for us.

The hotel wasn't very busy on the first night, as there was only us and another couple in residence, who happened to be in the room directly above us, unfortunately there was some noise, which really is to be expected, we would normally ask for top floor due to the noise levels that come with having rooms above you, wasn't too much of an issue and didn't carry on through the night.

Breakfast was lovely, and definitely no complaints, would definitely visit again due to its fantastic location, 15 min walk into the village of Bowness.

Thanku for a lovely break, would definitely recommend to friends and family in the future, my only regret is that I should have looked at the rooms on the top floor :))

Thank you so much for taking the trouble to review Woodlands, we are delighted you enjoyed your upgraded room. As it was such a special occasion we wanted you to have a memorable stay, and it sounds like you did. Glad you enjoyed breakfast, we are always trying hard to improve and think of new breakfast dishes. We will look forward to welcoming you back, and maybe trying a different room.

Just returned from Woodlands for a 2 night stay with my husband. I could not fault anything about this hotel. We were placed on the top floor, the room was beautifully decorated, cosy and clean but because of my knee problem I asked if it was possible could we move to a lower floor and equally the next room was the same cosy and clean. Young Anna was very helpful and showed me a few rooms which were available which were on a lower floor. Nothing was too much of a problem for her (very polite young lady). Breakfast "WOW" where do i start there was plenty of choice my husband went for the full English breakfast me on the other hand went for the pancakes they were "gorgeous". I would not hesitate in recommending this hotel, my husband and i will definitely book this hotel again when we visit Windermere.

My partner booked this as a surprise for my 30th birthday and paid £110 per night for 2 nights. We arrived on Friday evening and the hotel was deserted of staff but fortunately as we've stayed twice before we knew where the buzzer was located.
The staff member was very friendly although I was shocked when we were asked to pay the remainder of our bill upfront. This obviously did not happen.
We were shown to room 15 which was also a lovely and picturesque.
Unfortunately as soon as we stepped into the room the smell was not so lovely. We were greeted with a smell that was sweaty and musty. We narrowed it down to the bathroom. My partner informed the staff when we went out half an hour later. We were told that they went and put some odouriser in the bathroom and the window was left open.
On our return the bathroom still smelt very bad and we had to sleep with the window open which meant we were woken very early by traffic.
At breakfast we told the same staff member about the smell and told we could change room. As we had arrangements made we told them we couldn't do this at the time and would on our return to the hotel.
On returning later in the day we spoke to another staff member who said all the rooms were now taken so basically we had to put up with our smelly room.
The staff member came to smell our room and although she admitted to having a blocked nose she could still smell the sweatiness. More odour neutraliser was used and a plumber was offered how ever this would mean we were tied to staying in the room awaiting this and we couldn't have used the bathroom to shower in the meantime. The staff member said the owner was not present (and wasn't throughout our stay) but she would bring it to their attention. She also said they'd previously had plumbing issues.
The following morning at breakfast none of the staff bothered to ask about our smelly room nor did they offer any discount, gesture of goodwill or even an apology. The subject was not raised at all.
Although the breakfast was very nice and the room itself was great, the bathroom was tiny snd anyone with a weight issue would have trouble using the toilet in the space it was in.
The decoration needed updating, it hasn't changed in the last couple of years and for a five star I don't expect gouges in the wall and bird poo from the sky light on the bannister.
Very very disappointed and will not be returning. We have stayed in the lakes many times and know much nicer hotels and b&b's that are better value and staff with better managerial skills. Sadly for us these were booked up.

Thanks for taking the time to review Woodlands, we are obviously disappointed you did not wholly enjoy your stay. I have spoken to the staff members concerned who have a slightly different recollection of events. She had a heavy cold and informed you she couldn't smell anything at all, I myself visited the room immediately after being informed of the problem and I couldn't smell anything either. On a busy Saturday we generally don't have any rooms to move people to and that's why a plumber was offered, but we would not have expected you to stay in an wait for him, that's our job. The room has been used may times since, so hopefully was a one off and a shame that we were unable to help you more. I'm not really sure what else we could have done to address this any better. The comfort of our guests is really important to us and we will obviously keep an eye out for this problem recurring. On a positive we are happy you found the room lovely and picturesque, and that you enjoyed breakfast. I'm not sure why you felt the room therefore need a refurb? Sadly the skylight is on the very top of our roof, I think we would have trouble persuading our window cleaner to get up there.

Just returned from a 1 night stay at Woodlands. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, could have stayed longer,if we had planned it better. The room was clean, spacious, and very tasteful. The staff especially the proprieters were very friendly and helpful. Was happy to advise us where to eat and drink, which was very good. Would definitely recommend and will certainly be going back to stay again.

My husband and I stayed at Woodlands for 3 nights. A the hotel was quiet we got to have a look at a couple of rooms, and choose the one we wanted. The staff were VERY helpful and friendly. The full English breakfast was excellent, and set us up for the day. This was our first trip to the Lake District, and we will definitely go back.

Room Tip: Although the hotel did not have a pool, we could have used the spa facilities at another hotel nearb...
