“hotel with excellent service and very friendly staff”
Reviewed 13 April 2011

Just got back from staying two nights at this wonderful hotel, wish we had stayed a bit longer. Andrew and all the staff were so friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The breakfast was really good with lots of choice. The lounge/bar area is wonderfully cosy and we felt right at home. There was also a cupboard full of games for all guests to use and play whilst enjoying a drink, or two, or three.
We definitely will be returning, hopefully sometime soon.

Our family of 4 recently stayed at Lonsdale House in Bowness-on-Windermere. The location of the hotel was excellent, right on the main road into Bowness-on-Windermere, so handy for walking to all the shops and restaurants and the lake itself. The rooms are old with new and modern bathrooms. The rooms are not large but you expect that with English hotels. The rooms were very clean and serviced every day. The staff at this hotel were very welcoming and courteous. We were impressed in particular with the owner of this hotel, Andrew. His customer service was excellent and he was born to do this job. The room we were originally placed in was a family room (2 single beds and a double/queen bed). However, as we were in facing the main road and travelling with young children we found this room to be too noisy when the pubs closed late at night. The next morning Andrew "bent over backwards" to accommodate us and locate us to a differnt room which made all the difference, to our sleep, the following 2 nights. He was just such a pleasant person to deal with!! The breakfast served in Londsdale House was lovely and was extensive; the staff in the breakfast room were so pleasant. Parking is provided but the spaces are awkward (if you're not from England and used to small parking spaced). There is no lift with Lonsdale House, so it is good to be aware of this so you don't pack bags that are too heavy when contending with the stairs. Also, we had no luck with Wifi in either of the rooms we stayed in, but were offered to set our laptop up downstairs near reception (which we didn't get around to doing). Our stay was very pleasant and the Lake District just beautiful! I would recommend this hotel.

We spent 3 nights solid looking at reviews of hotels around Bowness / Windermere and Lonsdale House kept appearing on our short list. The deciding factor was when we telephoned to ask about taking our small dog. Andrew said it was no problem at all and very kindly offered to set a table in the lounge / bar for breakfast so we could take her down with us.

We cannot fault a thing. We had a great spacious room with a lovely view of the lake. Very clean and had everything we needed. Even a complimentary decanter of sherry, refilled every day (hic). Didn't hear a sound at night as the room was at the back of the hotel.

Andrew and all his staff and extremely friendly and helpful, nothing was any trouble. Breakfast was excellent. I wasn't that hungry by lunch time - and I can eat!!!

I got parked at the front each day without a problem. There are 3 spaces at the front and about 5 of 6 at the rear. They even offered to let us leave the car there for a few hours after check out - so we had time for a cruise on the lake and a walk before setting off home.

Only a few minutes walk downhill to the lake with plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants on the doorstep, even a small 'pub' had recently opened virtually next door (Ruskins), tho it didn't do food just yet - and its dog friendly!!!!

Ideally located to travel to nearby Ambleside, Keswick, Coniston, Hawkshead etc. Did feel quite at home and relaxed.

Nice little bar and lounge downstairs open til 10pm had a good selection of drinks, tho we only went down one night during our stay.

Best for a nice meal in a dog friendly pub goes to the Royal Oak. Real ale, real fire & decent food and welcoming staff!!! Average prices - for The Lakes! We were made to feel like locals.

We found The Ship below average. Although we were pleased they allowed dogs, we weren't made to feel welcome and it did smell quite a bit (not disguised by cheap automatic air fresheners). We were asked to sit by the door when we were the ONLY ones in there. Returned to Royal Oak.

Next time we go to the Lakes and stay over, we won't even look any further than staying at Lonsdale House. Well done Andrew and MANY thanks to you all for making our short stay so good - and we've never been able to say that 100% about anywhere :-)

From the minute we arrived we were greeted like old friends and made to feel very welcome. Andrew was a great "host" full of local knowledge and ideas about things to see and places to eat, he mixes a great cocktail too! :)
The hotel is in a wonderful location 5 minutes from the centre of Bowness and 10 minutes from Windermere. We had room 8 with a beautiful four poster bed and fantastic views of the lake, the room was spotlessly clean and very comfortable.
The breakfast was very moorish with a good selection of cereal, fruit and yoghurt as well as the full english, the service was excellent and the staff on hand to offer more toast tea and coffee.
We really enjoyed our stay in theis hotel it has a wonderful relaxing atmosphere and all of the staff were friendly and helpful without being overbearing. We have already booked to go back!

I booked a late valentines night in Bowness for the very cheap price of £55 via lastminute.com (plus a voucher code from MSE) including breakfast. On arrival, the lady was very welcoming and offered us a choice of 2 rooms, both with 4 poster bed. The room was fantastic and spacious with nice en-suite and complimentary sherry and sweets. Normally I would expect to pay easily £100+ for this.

Breakfast in the morning was also very good and the waiting staff polite and helpull. Only 1 downside was the noice from outside due to lack of double glazing and loud noise from another rooms shower/toilet. Overall it was fantastic value for money and is 100% recommended.

Stayed in hotel Friday for 1 night
Very friendly when we booked in staff very helpful nothing seemed too much trouble.
Had room 3 very clean and bathroom spotless only one slight issue and that was mattress on bed was lower than sides so scratched yourself getting in and out.
That said this was the only small issue we had, it will not stop us returning or recommending this hotel
