“Quick Lake District Visit”
Reviewed 8 September 2011

After a couple of cancelled visits ,my wife and I finally made it to the Lonsdale House Hotel.
We were welcomed by friendly and attentive staff and shown to our room where a small carafe of sherry for our enjoyment was a lovely gesture. Our room had a four poster bed and was very comfortable although a slight annoyance was road side traffic which dies off around 11pm.
Andrew, the owner, was very friendly and recommended several restaurants for us to try.
The morning breakfast was EXCELLENT and well up with the best we have had at any hotels anywhere.
All in all a very pleasant trip and my wife and I would have no hesitation in recommending the Lonsdale House to anyone.

My wife and i had a fantastic experience at your hotel. The staff were welcoming, the room was beautiful and the service was second to non. We stayed in a four poster room which was stunning and were recomended a fantastic Italien down the road for a meal which was almost as good as the breakfast at Lonsdale House!

All in all a lovely hotel in a central location with great staff, great service, great food and a stay that i would recommend to everybody.....thank you again.

Room Tip: Four poster beds are king size, very comfortable and a nice treat!

we so would as a family highly recommend this guest house, it is so close to all the amenities and is a place with comfort and cleanliness after a day of sightseeing. The standard is so high and staff are amazing, my wife is a fussy eater at breakfast and she was accomadated with whatever she needed. The rooms are spotless and warm and the manager i could not fault 'A true gentleman'. It's a must and great value for money!!!!!

Lonsdale is nothing like a 4 star property and reality falls well below the expectation created by their website and that of Hotel.com. Maybe there are others. The inference is that luxury accommodation is on offer but this is not so.

The hotel is well located in the main street of Windermere and within easy walking distance of shops and pubs etc and of course the lakefront, but the standard of rooms and cleanliness let the place down. The toilets didn’t flush easily and need some sort of repair altho to be fair we found this in several locations on our travels.

The hotel is right up to the edge of the main road with no footpath from the entrance way towards the village. You need to cross the road immediately to avoid the traffic coming at you .Being so close to the road makes the road facing rooms very noisy throughout the night. We were unlucky enough to have such a room. There is no air conditioning and the rooms get very hot but you have to choose between stifling in the room or opening the single window and putting up with the constant traffic noise.

This makes it impossible to sleep. Add to that a lumpy bumpy mattress on a four poster bed that felt and sounded like it was about to collapse. To make the bed more comfortable we attempted to sleep on the duvet cover. Worse was to come when we pulled back the bed to find the mattress heavily stained with urine and good knows what else.

On top of this the other guests were noisy, thumping around the landings and the room above us. There were families with children staying and in one room we saw several mattresses on the floor additional to the bed. It seemed families were sharing one room. In the morning we heard dogs in the hotel and the dining room/lounge had a doggy smell and the staff confirmed some guests had dogs in the rooms. This may be the norm in England but hardly a feature of a supposed 4 star property, we’d had enough and attempted to check out a day early.

To their credit they were apologetic and we were offered a room away from the road and one supposedly recently refurbished. Given we had prepaid the room months ago we accepted the offer. At least this time there was no road noise and the mattress was clean but again the room was nothing like 4 star standard and the carpet was dirty. The breakfasts were fine and free parking at the rear of the hotel a good feature, although it was tight and you were asked to leave your car key at reception so they could move the vehicles around if needed. Not ideal.

The staff are pleasant and helpful but the place itself is overrated. We can only surmise there are differing UK rating standards compared to international standards. It needs to be clarified for the likes of overseas visitors. Even our experienced travel agent got excited about our staying at Lonsdale, expecting us to be wallowing in luxury.. far from it.

Room Tip: Do your research even if recommended by your travel agent. Definitely check out on TA.

The overall experience was superb - we really couldn't have asked for much more. The room was sensational - although the windows could have done with a wash - but the views amazing and the tipple of Sherry a welcoming touch. Everything in the room was clean and well cared for and you felt spoilt with its luxury. The location was fantastic for the local shops, pubs and restaurants as well as Lake Windermere. The bar was a little oppressive with the dried flowers adorning every wall, but the boats and Lake Pictures were in keeping with the surroundings. Breakfasts were made with love and care and were always to a high standard, but the sausages were a little below par. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay - the staff always had a smile and were accommodating and informative. A real treat! Thank you :)

Room Tip: The room on the top floor overlooking the Lake is stunning and well worth the stairs. There is no li...

We were welcomed to this delightful little guesthouse by Andrew (the world's nicest manager). He told us where to park (limited spaces however), helped us with our luggage and took us to our spacious room which not only had views towards the lake and lovely furniture but a caraffe of sherry to enjoy. Lonsdale is an easy walk to the lake and restaurants. Breakfast was delicious. Highly recommended.

We stayed here with our granddaughter aged 5. We received a warm welcome & the family room we had was very clean & a nice size. The ensuite had only a shower in our room (No 4) which was not a problem for us, but might be more difficult if travelling with younger children.

Breakfast was excellent & nothing seemed to much trouble. There was plenty of parking & we were advised although check out was 10.00 am guests could leave their cars until midday if they wished.

The bonus of the accomodation is its location. It is situated on Lake Road just where the shops & restaurants of Bowness start. It could not have been more than 5 minutes walk to the centre of Bowness & the cinema & some restaurants are only a minute away. Once we had parked up the car we did not move it until we left.

We would certainly stay here again.
