“Shabby and definatley NOT 4 star!”
Reviewed 29 August 2012

We stayed at this guest house for 2 nights whilst visiting the Lakes and was very disappointed indeed. We booked what was described as a 'Superior Double room with Lake view' and were very disappointed indeed when we saw it. The 'Hotel' leads you to believe from it's website that it is four star!...Let us warn you it is definatley NOT four star. The room we originally booked, and were subsequently moved from, was on the top floor (lots of steep stairs to climb) and yes.. you could see the lake over the rooftops of the buildings behind...if you could find a decent clear spot through the failed double glazing! There was black mildew on the sills and frames inside the window, the bed was badly made and had filthy scuff marks all around the bottom, then furniture was falling apart, there was rust all along the radiator bottom, a damp patch with mould on the en-suite ceiling and a filthy glass containing toopaste residue in rusted glass holder above the sink! There was a fitted wardrobe that looked like it had been knocked together out of banna crates, a thick layer of dust on the lamps and telephone/radio etc. etc. To be fair to the staff, they were very friendly and the day manager (cant remember his name) offered us another room and a discount, which, given that it was late in the day and I didnt fancy driving home again, we took. The second room was much better and had a fourposter bed and was newly decorated. The door however was very difficult to un-lock and could be a potential danger if ever there was a fire. The food was average but my wife opened a yoghurt on the second morning and found that it was mouldy! I also didint appreciate being questioned by the european gentleman who was responsible for the cleaning of the rooms; why I wasnt happy with the first room whilst I was having my breakfast! The sad thing about the whole experience is that the place could be 4 star with a little investment and greater care in cleaning.

Room Tip: Room 3 was nicely decorated and not as noisey as you would expect being on the ground floor at the f...

We are sorry that you were disappointed with your stay. On arrival you were obviously incredibly confused as you firmly believed that you had booked a Superior Lake View Room at 'Langdale Chase' Hotel as per the print offs of the room you thought you had booked which was clearly not our Guest House. Please note the Langdale Chase is a 4 star hotel and costs three times as much as we do. We are Lonsdale House and are a Guest House and do not pretend to be otherwise. We understand you confused the name but your review still appears to be comparing us and your expectations of a local prestigious and very expensive lake frontage hotel.

We do not have and do not advertise 'Superior Rooms'. As you were very upset and stand offish at your mistake we did offer you a Lake View Room as a good will gesture but you did not want to climb the stairs and subsequently asked to be moved to the Ground Floor which we did - there was certainly no other reason mentioned for the move. The building was built in 1851 and is protected so we do not have a lift but the stairs are only as steep as any other stairs. It is worth using the stairs as the view from Room 9 is spectacular looking up the Lake towards Ambleside and the Langdale Pikes beyond. We inspected the room thoroughly on receiving your review and could not identify any of the points you mentioned. The room is clean, well presented, certainly no furniture falling apart and the inbuilt wardrobe was built by a local joiner and not out of banana crates.

Pawel, the member of staff who spoke to you after breakfast, was only being friendly and simply asked if your were enjoying your stay and if you liked your room (as it has just been refurbished) - he was certainly not questioning you and was very surprised at your comments on Trip Advisor. We also would have liked you to have brought to our attention the yogurt your wife had at breakfast as food standards are incredibly high at Lonsdale and very important. All our food is locally sourced and produced and we would have contacted the local dairy that supplies the yogurts (we have not had any complaints about the yogurts before or since) - we have a 5 star food rating and our kitchens are spotless and we take great pride in the food we serve.

We had our annual Fire Safety Inspection by Castle Fire and all the extinguishers, lighting, alarms etc. are checked and no faults were found. We also ensured that room 3 door was double checked and no faults were found with the lock or the door.

Again we are sorry you were disappointed but feel that your review was not really very fair or representative of what we feel is a fantastic Guest House in a great location, offering superb accommodation at very competitive rates.

Stayed for 1 night in August 2012 with partner and 20 month old baby. Was allocated room 9 which is a spacious double with lake views plenty of room for a travel cot, which the hotel provided. Excellent check in, staff were very friendly and helpful during our short stay, the hotel is very central just a short walk to the lake and has parking. We had a drink in the bar in the evening and the prices are very reasonable also the breakfast in the morning was lovely. Would stay again without doubt.

We stayed at Lonsdale house 23-25 August with our 2 daughters aged 11 and 7. We were greeted by Andrew who made us feel very welcome, checked us in, showed us around the bar area (which is very nice) and showed us to our room. The rooms are sympathetically decorated very much in keeping with the house and very clean. There was a carafe of sherry (for us) and some sweets for the kids too.
Breakfast was between 8-30 and 9-30. You could have cereal fruit juice toast and full English. The breakfast was really good and enjoyed by the 4 of us both mornings.
All the staff in this hotel are very friendly and keen to serve or help in any way, especially Pavel who was keen to offer advice on days out and the local area and was interested to find out how our stay had been on check out.
Overall we will book this hotel again on our next visit to Bowness as we had no problems at all with our stay!!

We booked this trip for a short break after reading good reviews from other travellers on tripadvisor. Unfortunately, we did not feel it deserved the four star rating. Our room (11) was very small and in an annex above the breakfast room. The carpets were very dirty and lots of black marks over the skirting boards etc - the place just looked a bit run down. The room was very bare, had no paintings on the walls and had no curtains, just blinds. It didn't feel very homely at all. Our bathroom although en suite was downstairs and had no bath which we were looking forward to after a hard day walking. The breakfast on the first day was adequate but nothing special and on the second day unfortunately was served cold. The staff were very friendly and helpful but we just don't feel the place was worth the money or the four star rating. Slightly disappointing.

Decided to have a nights break away for some P&Q, booked last minute at Lonsdale House. Very handy and convienient for Bowness and Lake Winderemere.
Very clean, spacious rooms, and a car-park a bonus.
Only wee fault was that the breakfast was served cold, and we were first down at 8.25am lol. Food was of good quality but cold. Didnt want to complain as everything else was fine, and tbh we will stay again. Thanks

Room Tip: Good view of the lake from top reqar rooms.

We spent two nights here on a walking break in Bowness. We booked here mainly because it advertised itself as dog-friendly.
Monika (who worked all weekend while we were there) was extremely helpful and welcoming and couldn't do enough to assist us. The standard of the room was good. We stayed in room 6. It has a four poster bed and also plenty of room for our two (big) dogs!
The breakfasts were good with local bacon and sausages - just what we needed to set us up for a days walking.
We enjoyed two walks, both of which we did from the door of the B&B. We can recommend Claife Heights for a longer walk, you just need to use the car ferry to cross Windermere which is about a mile down the road through Bowness (50p each way - a bargain!)
Considering it is a dog friendly B&B, I think we were the only ones with dogs there this weekend. The whole place is spotlessly clean and decorated in a traditional style.
The only minor irritation was the limited parking, and if a party of guests arrive in multiple cars, there is inadequate parking! However, the staff are very good at helping with this slight problem and by Saturday, we had a parking space that didn't necessitate blocking other people in!
Overall, we would recommend this B&B to anyone wanting to enjoy a friendly and comfortable stay in Bowness, with or without the dogs!

We greatly value our short breaks away and try to chose very carefully to get the best mix of value for money location and accommodation that will create a relaxing experience. The website photos are very impressive but in reality we felt on arrival that the building exterior fell short of our expectations. As we were shown to our room up four flights of stairs and with a very heavy case (help was offered), our feelings weren't being soothed. The room was extremely spacious and welcoming but that lake view from our lake view room that we'd been hoping for was a lot more distant than imagined. A big bath soak is always a plus, so to discover our room only had a shower was again disappointing. When you want the best with your hard earned cash all these things can make such a difference. However the many pluses included friendly, efficient staff, lovely breakfasts and the beautiful location. It was never a very long walk to find a quite spot by the lake and just admire! We certainly hope to visit this location again but would certainly check out other types of accommodation of which there are many.

Room Tip: Not quite as sumptuous as the photos might lead you to believe if that is what matters to you. As s...
