“a wonderful hotel”
Reviewed 9 September 2013

I stayed in Lonsdale House with my boyfriend for 2 nights. I couldn't have chosen a better hotel. The price was reasonable and the location was fantastic (short walk to the lake and 15 min walk from Windermere train station).

The staff were very friendly and, as I had booked in advanced, we were upgraded to the lake view/ four poster bed room. The room was beautiful and the decor was a mix between modern and traditional. We were on the top floor and had to walk up quite a few stairs to get to our room (this wasn't a problem for us but might prove difficult for some guests). The view from the bedroom was wonderful and, due to being on the top floor, it felt very private.

Breakfast was delicious and there were plenty of options. The dining room is small and comfortable and there we could see that the hotel was suitable for all groups (couples, families, walkers) The staff were once again friendly and efficient at breakfast and our food arrived quickly.

I would definitely recommend this hotel. I had booked the trip as a surprise for my Italian boyfriend's birthday and it was the perfect way to show him a part of the Lake District. The hotel was typically English and had a warm and welcoming feel to it.

Just returned from a 5 night stay. Lonsdale House is in a good location, a five/ten minute walk to the Lake (depending on how fast you can go - the walk back from the Lake is up-hill some of the way !!). Lots of places to eat and drink. I would recommend a visit to the fish and chips shop 'Vinegar Jones' .

Staff were very friendly on our arrival and throughout our stay. Our room was very clean and tidy, clean towels provided as needed etc each day. The staff who served us breakfast each morning were very polite and attentive, asking if we would like extra toast, tea/coffee etc without being in your face all the time. The breakfast itself was very good, the portions were a good size, not too big. I liked the fact that we were asked what we would like each morning as I varied what cooked items I had across the week and had tea some mornings and coffee on others. Maybe some fresh fruit provided on the table with the cereals and yogurts would be nice for those not wanting a cooked breakfast. Just a couple of negatives to mention. (1) The boiler in the hotel is very noisy. Not sure if much can really be done about this. (2) The extractor fan in the bathroom is also very noisy each time you turn the light on, again I know this is not easily rectified, I know that you need a fan when there is no window in the bathroom. (3) The door leading to the bathroom could do with some attention as it keeps sticking and does not shut with ease. Just mentioning this as a general maintenance issue. (4) Parking could be tricky when the Hotel is busy and the spaces at the front are tight for big cars - but it does test your parking skills and you are in a prime location so this is to be expected !!! I would also move the two small bushes at either side of the entrance (just up the stairs) as they get in the way of getting to the front door, just a minor thing.
The sherry and sweets are a nice touch in the room. All-in-all, more positives than negatives for Lonsdale House.

Room Tip: I would suggest trying to get a room not on the ground floor and at the back of the hotel.

We had a lovely night in Bowmere and enjoyed our stay at Lonsdale house. If you can get the room at the back, it's very private and you feel like you are away on your own. (I think it is room nine). My only complaint is the parking. We were hoping to be on the road early but had to interrupt some people eating breakfast to ask them to move their car so we could get out.
The hosts are very very friendly and breakfast very tasty.

Stayed there for our thirtieth wedding anniversary in the deluxe suite, room was ok but bottom floor on a busy main road was very noisy and no privacy ,you had to keep curtains drawn due to people walking past seeing into the room, that's my only complaint, staff where friendly, breakfast was very tasty and plants of.....

Room Tip: One at the back which I've stayed in before, no noise at all

I'll get the boring stuff out of the way first, first impressions aren't amazing, bottom step and white glass door need a bit of TLC. Apart from that is was a lovely tay, I think a few people on here have overplayed the road noise, we overlooked said road and it really wasn't that offensive, and i live in a tiny village where everyone is in bed by 10, so it's not something i'm used to or anything like that!

The rooms were lovely, I loved the four poster bed, the sweets and sherry were a lovely touch, it's an incredibly convenient spot for walks (go up helm road and there are footpaths galore) and trips to the lake, as well as exploring other locations. Breakfast was served with a smile and the staff are all lovely, the young tall man who works there in particular was an absolute gem (I'm sorry to not have caught his name). Very homely and were made to feel as nothing was too much trouble. Would happily recommend!

Stayed here for 2 nights beginning of August! Arrived early but was able to leave are bags and go off and wander! Room nice and big, double bed and single bed and still lots of room! Fab views towards the lake. Had to ask for a fan as it was really warm! Lots of draw space but not many hangers (7) for 3 people! Could of done with a full length mirror, also coat hooks on door/wall wouldn't go a miss even a chair with a high back would Of done. Hair dryer and tv in room along with tea coffee sherry and toffees!! iron and board available on request. Bathroom was small but manageable, small travel toiletries provided. Shower cubicle is tiny so ladies if you don't want to get your hair wet bring a shower cap! Breakfast was fab plenty of choice, cereal, yoghurt, grapefruit, toast, full English, fresh juice and tea or coffee. The staff are fab very friendly and very helpful.

After a last minute decision to stop for a day in Windermere on our trip up to Scotland I came across this guest house online. The reviews suggested overall it was okayISH but not really worth it's four stars. I could not agree less! The house is lovely and had lots of character. It has a cute typical English lounge with a small bar and there is a dining room. We were offered to use the many games they had for the children. The room was very big and clean and again with lots of character. There was a large four poster bed with extra beds either side for our children, leaving still plenty of floor space. There was a flat screen and complimentary tea/coffee and even sherry and sweets! The bathroom looked brand new and had an overhead rain shower over a large bath. Breakfast was lovely and plenty full. The staff were all very friendly. Would definitely come back here!
