“Excellent Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2013

My family and I stayed there for a long weekend from the 5th July 2013.
The hotel was very clean, the staff were excellent, they couldn't do enough for us, next time we visit this area we will definitely stay there again,

Room Tip: Higher floors, never heard any noise from the bar.

Last minute booking and can't believe what a little gem we found. There is nothing I can fault with this hotel. High standards of cleanliness throughout. Bedroom was very clean with loads of extras a great shower and a very comfortable bed. The staff were absolutely brilliant. Very friendly and very helpful and nothing was to much trouble. Nice bar area with reasonably price drinks and the locals are very friendly. Breakfast in the morning was excellent and was the finishing touch to our very enjoyable stay at The Royal Hotel. We visit the Lake District quite a lot and in the future this hotel will be our base.

The Royal is a newly refurbished pub/hotel and a great-value choice for somewhere to stay in the South Lakes. I used to live in Ulverston and Ireleth, and worked in Barrow so I'm fully aware of the shall-we-say 'industrial' nature of Barrow - and this hotel is in Barrow Island, the most industrial and one of the poorest areas of the UK, never mind Cumbria.

But this place deserve success. Boy, has someone spent some dosh on it. The bar, common areas and rooms have been given a pristine white paintjob and the carpet is so thick you could lose your shoes in it. On the walls hang stunning prints by local artist John Diffin - these vivid paintings of Barrow are pleasing aesthetically and give visitors a good social history lesson.

The bar: We arrived on a rare hot sunny evening and the lively locals were entertaining company in the bar when we checked in. And it seems that hotel guests get a free drink at the bar too! After a long trip on the motorbike, how good did that taste? Superb. Later in the evening, the customers were happy to allow us to change the TV channel to show the TT coverage.

Rooms: Ours (101, never a good number for a room) was a bit teeny. The advice here on TripAdvisor to ask for a larger room was good - but 105 was booked. The bed was big and comfy, with lovely fresh linen. The other reviewer's comment about noise from the bar is true enough but since we were in the bar til late, that wasn't a problem. The hotel are doing up more rooms which spread across upper floors, so I'd suggest you ask to be further away from the bar if you want a quieter room.
Because the place is so new, there were things lacking in the room so we made a 'snagging' list and gave it to the receptionist (eg: needs a mirror in the room not just the bathroom, needs bedside tables and lamps etc). I'm sure the team will get all these things sorted out soon. (I suggested they stay in the rooms themselves and do snagging as a team - just like big hotel chains do.)

Food: Well, I'm sorry to say this was a bit 'Fawlty Towers' but added to the entertainment. The blackboards on the outside of the pub offer 'Wednesday curry + drink £7'. It was Wednesday. Great! But no curry to be had. In fact no food at all. Kitchen not up-and-running yet maybe. So why advertise on the wall? No idea. But we were told we were very welcome to get food from the takeout places across the street and bring it in to eat in the bar. Which we did. Can't recommend the Chinese chippy though, it was bland. But we enjoyed eating in the bar, with a pint and the TT on the television. It all added to the friendly vibe.

Then in the morning, the breakfast cook had apparently fallen and hurt herself so badly that she couldn't work, nor get the key to the kitchen (?!) for someone else to do the breakfasts for her. So we got £10 back on our booking. Which was interesting because our booking (via bookings dot com) didn't actually say that we got brek included anyway.
So we took our ten quid, and the free paper from the choice we were offered, and walked into Barrow to find coffee and food. As I know the area, I was able to give my companion a lively tourist-y commentary on the area but to a visitor new to this area, Barrow Island ain't pretty. Luckily I find industrial heritage fascinating so big old docks and tenements are interesting for me, rather than ugly. (We had breakfast and the best coffee I've had in months - seriously - in The Last Resort Cafe on Cavenish Street).

The area: my companion was concerned about leaving his motorbike on these side-streets. But this isn't Liverpool; Barrow people are lovely, friendly and keen to have visitors.

Please don't hesitate to book this place. You'll be paying half the price of eg: The Duke of Edinburgh and you'll have a jolly time as this hotel starts to really find its feet. Jess on the bar, and Charlotte and Andy on the reception desk are warm good-hearted people doing their best to offer quality service in a town not used to it. We wish them loads of luck, and hope you make The Royal a flourishing business to help rejuvenate Barrow Island!

Room Tip: Ask for a larger room (eg: 105) and if you want a quiet room, as to be as far away from the bar as p...

Please dont be put off when you first arrive as we nearly were, the outside and surrounding area is not the best first impression you could want, however park your car and take 5minutes to look inside and you won't be dissapointed. The staff were more than helpful and showed us around before we commited to staying the night. Very nice rooms decorated to a high standard,a good quality shower and very clean and comfortable bed and linen, bedroom furniture was new and spotless, however room 202 (my room) had no wardrobe !, brand new carpets through-out the hotel. The bar area was brand new and the quality of the beer was very good, the John Smith's was one of the best hotel pints i have enjoyed in a long while. Breakfast was good quality and was enjoyed by all of us(4 adults)......The hotel is on Barrow Island so there is a good 15/20 minute walk into the centre of Barrow, taxi's might be a good idea to get into Barrow. Staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Would stay here again no problem .....

Room Tip: 2nd floor was good.

I stayed here for 2 nights in June 2013 in a twin room. The entire hotel has recently been refurbished to a very high standard. Our room was very large with 2 very comfortable single beds. We had all the stuff you would expect, tea/coffee making facilities, LCD TV and Sky box with decent bathroom facilities including a good quality shower. The staff were all very welcoming and always went out of their way to make sure you had everything you needed, providing a personal touch missing from a lot of hotels these days. I've stayed in most of the hotels in Barrow, this is by far the best - we will definitely be going back.

Was concerned by reviews on arrival to windfarm but after checking in all my worries were unfounded. Recently refurbished to excellent standard and very friendly staff. Was made to feel welcome from the start.
Rooms are clean and well presented and linen changed daily.
Was staying there as working on the windfarm and after informing staff of this they arranged for an early breakfast pack on reception ready for my departure... (05:45). Hotel is arranging for meal deal/ packed lunch to be provided as part of the room specifically for contractors which looking forward to on my return.
Will definitely stay here again.

Barrow in Furness quite industrial town, however just 30 mins drive from the lakes - much cheaper accommodation than Lake district itself. Rooms match the photos - very spacious, clean, comfortable and decorated to high standard - however the hotel is basically a bar with a few rooms above it. Bar was unfortunately quite noisy all 3 nights we were there - so would definitely recommend taking ear plugs if any decent sleep is to be had. Staff friendly enough. (Note for ladies, no hair dryers in rooms so take your own if you require one). Few points from our own experience/stay there but likely to be one-offs: Wifi intermittently available, AMEX card payment didn't work despite it being advertised as accepted, food sourced from cafe across road as Hotel kitchen out of service.
