“Terrible location, terrible hotel”
Reviewed 3 March 2013

We were due to stay one night at this hotel. The hotel itself isn't too bad, just unbearably warm and without any toilet paper. The location was absolutely horrific, we lasted a maximum of an hour here before making a swift exit. I do not recommend.

I debated long and hard whether to reward The Majestic with 3 out 5 (Average) or 4 out of 5 (Very Good).

It is located on the edge of Barrow In Furness town centre - which is just a few minutes walk away and about 15 minutes from the railway station.

We had a room on the top floor - overlooking the main road and a round-a-bout.

Housed within the same building is an Italian restaurant (Francescas) and the hotel bar. The reception area is small and when we arrived there was no one there. We duly rang the bell provided and no one arrived. After the second ring (and an overall wait of around 5 minutes) a member of staff arrived and checked us in.

The hotel has three floors (for bedrooms) and a lift between them - which was't working when we stayed there.

Our room was relatively clean (there was a bit of dust lurking in obscure places and the spare pillow was badly stained) and tastefully decorated. A TV had most Freeview channels. The pillows provided seemed very thin (possibly life expired) and the mattress had a lot of "give" in it as well.

We had a bath in our room - although some rooms do have a shower and no bath. The en-suite had no curtain - just a net so people outside could potentially see inside the bathroom. Part of the bath enamel was missing (leaving a black "spot") and some bathrooms fittings has broken off leaving metal on the wall but nothing else.

The traffic noise didn't disturb us (we stayed a Saturday night) and all in all we had a good nights sleep.

In the hall outside the room was a "communal" iron and ironing board that could be borrowed if required.

Breakfast was served the following morning in the Italian restaurant and the staff were friendly and attentive. The offer the usual cereals, yoghurts and fruit juices followed by a cooked option which ranges from The Ultimate (Bacon, Sausage, Egg, Hash Brown, Black Pudding, Tomato, Beans, Mushroom and Toast) to just a bacon sarnie. The breakfast was a pleasant surprise and was very tasty.

As first mentioned we struggled to decide upon a rating for this hotel. 3/5 seemed too harsh and 4/5 seemed too good. It does have some minor problems but we paid just £35 for the room and a great breakfast. If they paid attention to some of the smaller details it would be a very good stay.

at 35 pounds for a double room B & B I could not ask for better value for money and I would have been happy paying £60 for this.
no thrills ( except the card tricks by the chap on reception :) ) but what do you expect at this price. good location if you were going out in barrow. easy access to walney ( the beach ).

would come back here if need a bed for the night when visiting friends but possibly not if woo-ing the wife.

great friendly helpful staff: thanks

Stayed here while touring and what a lucky choice we made, everything was good about this place, the staff were friendly and helpful, the room was large and spotless ( operating theatre standard) and the food was superb everything was fresh using quality ingredients. This is an inexpensive hotel providing all round excellent service and could honestly teach a few of the so called "superior "hotels a few things

Booked this hotel as had good deal on family room £45. One double bed and a single bed.
The room (205) was good size and lovely bathroom. Very clean & warm. We were facing the main road with little noise despite staying on a Friday & Saturday night. This is the 2nd time we have stayed and have have the same room both times.

The elevator was still out of order as it was on our last visit a couple of years ago. Not a problem, the stairs were ok to walk up even for my 4 year old.

If you want value for money plus more then this is the place. Friendly helpful staff, thank-you to Rose at breakfast who was fantastic with my son. He said she was his girlfriend!

Also very helpful & friendly receptionist

Large flat screen tv with plenty of channels, tea and coffee refilled everyday and plentyful. Lots of storage space.

Excellent breakfast, with a choice of a full cooked breakfast cooked to order, as well as cereals & fruit.

On the saturday night we ordered a pizza from the resturant as a takeout. It was good value and tasty.

The staff on reception where very friendly and made you feel very welcome

We will always use this hotel when visiting this area, can't recommend it enough, just don't expect 5 star standards and you will be fine

I stayed at the Majestic this week on a business trip to Barrow. I had a single room on the 2nd floor.Room was adequate but the bed was a small single, and the lift was out of commission, but I needed the exercise anyway. The hotel is quite reasonably priced and the breakfasts were the highlight of the stay.My room had a single glazed old fashioned push up window which rattled with the wind, the radiator didn't work but despite the cold weather there was enough heat from the very hot bathroom radiator to keep the room warm.
All things considered you get what you pay for, and I would stay there again.

Booked this hotel as had good deal on family room £40! We were visiting the zoo the following day for our little boys birthday.
I had already made a reservation for the restaurant, which was lucky as we were told it was fully booked.
Hotel staff were faultless.
I found the room of good size and lovely bathroom. We were facing the main road and the noise wasn't too bad.
We headed to the restaurant and it was already full the food was plentiful and they made a special birthday plate for my son he was thrilled. Price for 2 courses each including drinks £40.
Could not fault the breakfast either. I went for ultimate breakfast to set me out for the day at the zoo and it was delicious. All in all good little hotel would definitely stay again
