“Great location for exploring Durham”
Reviewed 31 July 2012

We stayed at the Durham City Centre Premier Inn for one night on visit to Durham on 29th July on a Meal Deal plan. Room and service, both front of house and restaurant, was as good as always. The hotel is located next to the Gala Theatre in the city centre and alongside quite a few eateries and inns. It is also near the River Wear riverside walk from where there are great views of the Cathedral. The hotel group will store your baggage safely to ensure that you can enjoy your final day’s sightseeing of the city. Recommended.

Stayed i night in july and really enjoyed our stay , we were given a very warm welcome from Donna , the receptionist and she did her best to help with our trip , nothing was ever too much trouble, she is a credit to the management . The rooms were the lovely and clean , bright and quiet . The meals were also such good value for money , we used the meal deal and for £22 for a 3 course evening dinner and a full english breakfast it was very good quality and served by staff who were happy to be doing the job.The hotel is in a brilliant location for sight seeing and Durham is well worth seeing , will be back soon .

Premier Inns can be much of a muchness but this one stands out for several reasons. It's location is pretty much perfect, right on the doorstep of Durham city centre but far enough away for there to be little or no noise. Parking is directly behind the hotel and is a very reasonable £7.50 for 24 hrs. There are several bars and restaurants within 100 metres of the hotel. (However, I would avoid the Slug and Lettuce. Service is appalling and the place needs a staff transplant). There is a very nice lounge area within the hotel and a pint is very good value at £3.10. As per usual with Premier Inns, the place was immaculate the room was spacious everything worked and the lifts were speedy. But the stand out for me was the staff. Tip them well. I cannot remember a hotel anywhere in the country where the staff were as attentive, polite, helpful and just plain nice. They even made a late night cuppa after the bar had closed for this insomniac! Cannot fault the hotel in any way. 5/5

The room was spacious and clean, the staff were friendly and value for money was good. A great and very reasonably priced breakfast. Much better than a Travelodge ! Using sat nav wasn't easy and I seemed to go round about 3 times before I stumbled upon it. Better signposting would help ! The nearby car park (100 yards) was £7.50 for 24 hours, come and go as many times as you want, which is reasonable for a crowded city centre.

Will definitely use Premier Inn again.

Room Tip: get a map of the city centre and locate it before you start. Sat Nav doesn't take you all the wa...

Great location, right in the heart of Durham. 5 minutes from Market Square and Cathedral.
Parking a few yards away - reduced prices for hotel patrons £7.50 for 24 hours.
Efficient and friendly check in.
Staff throughout the hotel treated us with genuine warmth.
Room was spacious and ultra clean. The bed was really comfortable with a choice of hard and soft pillows.
Stayed with friends - a small but nice area to meet/relax in and bar was open until 2am!
Had not booked in advance but enjoyed a wonderful 'continental' breakfast which included porrige, cereals, toast, a variety of breads and cakes, a selection of conserves, yoghurts, fresh and dried fruits and unlimited teas and costa coffee! The cooked breakfasts looked lovely too.

I went with my partner and four year old son and had one of the family rooms at the above.

Location
Right in the heart of Durham. 5 minutes from Market Square and Cathedral. 10 Mins from Train Station. And right next door to the main night time strip so good venue for those hen and stag do's as well. So location really is fantastic. Only issue is on the Friday/Saturday if you leave the window open you will get a bit of background noise / music. Window shut nothing.

Rooms
As per spec to be honest. Extra bed for my son was very good. Rooms include shower/bath and full tea/coffee facilities. Only issue was the slight hint of smoke. We opened window during day bit to be honest it did remain. For non-smokers slightly irritating at times.

Breakfast
While not included in price fantastic value and I would recommend.

Overall a good hotel and worth its 4 stars.

First off, this was our first time staying at a Premier Inn, and I wasn't sure what to expect from this budget chain. The location was great, close to restaurants, shops, bars etc... We were treated very warmly by everyone there, you definitely couldn't fault the staff at all! The things that let it down were the breakfast (which is quite pricey and a bit basic, I had higher expectations considering the price), some of the things in the room (like the loo roll, which is a horrid single sheet dispenser like you see at a train station), and the noise outside on weekends (not the hotels fault obviously). So, did it deserve a 4 of 5? Yeah, actually, we slept pretty well 3 out of 4 nights, the staff made it seem like nothing was too much trouble, and the price for the room was very cheap compared to some places we've stayed in the UK.
