During our recent trip to the UK we (a family of four) decided to visit Durham and because this was a short trip destination for us we opted to stay centrally at this wonderful hotel. From the moment we checked in to the time that we checked out everything went very smoothly. The staff were really great, our family room very spacious, the price reasonable, the breakfast great, the bar very nicely decorated and the nearby car park (with special and reasonable prices for the guests of the hotel) very handy and just round the corner. All in all this was a fantastic stay and we shall definately return.

Durham Watergate is very central and most places can be reached by foot although there are one or two hilly bits which might be a problem for the over 60's. The rooms are well furnished , tv is great, really comfortable beds and good bathroom. Breakfast very good. Evening meal was alright but there are many food outlets nearby, particularly Ask Italia which have specialist menus.

We stayed here a couple of nights on our way back from Scotland and were delighted to find a big TV that worked properly with a good selection of channels and radio stations - different from our experiences in remoter parts of Scotland! But we did have to pay for Wi-Fi, which was a bit annoying, especially after having to pay £82 per night for a room (booked six months earlier) when they were advertising rooms for that night at £29.95! What am I doing wrong here!

But this was a good hotel, well up to usual Premier Inn Standards, with very friendly staff and great effort successfully made to make the place considerably more attractive and welcoming inside than the rather soulless exterior. The bed was very comfortable and the air con worked well and was needed on the hot nights we were there. Our room was right by the lift and we feared noise but it was beautifully quiet and we slept really well. We thought the breakfast buffet choice was wide and very good - fried eggs ready and waiting for you but still nice and soft yolks! Also very good fruit salad.

Best of all is the location, which is why we chose it. Close to everything you want in Durham City centre. We very much appreciated the advice we found on here about how to avoid all the steps and where to park so no apologies for repeating it:

“You do have to pay extra for parking but that’s now the expected with city centre hotels really. The best one is Walkergate which is situated directly behind the hotel. On level one there is a sneaky door which will bring you our directly to the side of the hotel instead of having to walk all the way round!
Also if you are going into the city there are a massive amount of steps to climb when you come out of the hotel at riverside level, go back into the carpark via the sneaky door and use the lift, this will take you to level 7 which is then street level. Here you will find some great bars and restaurants before you have even gone 100 yds.”

As a loyal fan of Premier Inn hotels, I am going to like the usual parts, no hassle, reasonably priced. This hotel does very well compared to others but it is not the best. Yes it's got a Big Samsung TV, air con and great staff but it also has areas to improve:
Bed - This was the biggest let down, it may be because I was in a family room on my own, but 2 singles clipped together could be felt all night, not bad enough to warrant a free stay but inconvenient.
WiFi - this was slow, even for hotel WiFi, but alas it stopped me from working all night so silver linings and all that...

A couple of areas to look at, both can be improved upon. But otherwise hassle free stay.

I stayed here for a night. It's a new hotel and room was very nice and new. The staff were very helpful. I had a problem with the Internet and they gave me a voucher. Only the breakfast is the usual Premier Inn stuff (i.e. avoid).

Very close to the train station and city centre as well.

This Premier Inn is very well placed in Durham city centre and we got a good rate by booking early. We were greeted by very helpful staff who outlined where to park, breakfast arrangements etc. Our room was very comfortable and well up to Premier's usual standards. We opted for the continental breakfast buffet which was reasonably priced and offered a good selection. As this is in the city centre there is no car parking but there is a car park behind and you can get a reduced rate ticket at reception. We felt that the parking cost was reasonable for the location. It really is city centre and you can quickly walk to the cathedral and shopping areas. We would thoroughly recommend this hotel for a city centre stay. It was excellent value for money and spotlessly clean.
