“A great pleasure”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 December 2008

Having stayed at many 4 and 5 star properties recently, I have to say that our 2 night experience, with our family at this very centrally situated and friendly Durham hotel was excellent. The bedrooms were of a good size; clean and comfortable, with an enormous double bed, fitting for Bishop.
Breakfast was very good value and freshly cooked - no 'stewing' of re-heated bacon/eggs etc. here. An excellent find, only a few yards from the city centre.

  • Liked — location and friendliness plus value
  • Disliked — It is located at the bottom of some steep, but fairly easily negotiated steps.

I stayed here whilst on a business trip that coincided with visiting my son who is a student a Durham University.

Very friendly and helpful staff at reception who were happy to find a room on the quiet side of the building (not sure it was noisy on the other), and did so with a smile. Room itself was clean, modern, comfortable.

Breakfast was quick and friendly.

Location was perfect as a short walk from the city centre.

  • Liked — Friendly staff, location.
  • Disliked — No free parking (but discounted rate at nearby car park).

I stayed here for two nights during a photographic weekend with a bunch of friends. I was greeted warmly & given plenty of information by the friendly receptionist. My room overlooked a bar at the back (although I barely heard any noise at all!), and was extremely comfortable and well equipped. The bed was huge and very cosy - I slept like a log both nights and I am a light sleeper! And I needn't have brought my hairdryer with me as there was already one there, underneath the neat little area for the kettle/drinks/well lit vanity mirror.

The bathroom was clean, functional and already equipped with shower gel - the shower was powerful! Breakfast was extra - £7.50 - but you could eat your fill, and the cooked breakfast was delicious, the restaurant served by extremely helpful & friendly staff.

The hotel was within walking distance of lots of bars and restaurants and the town centre - but had great double glazing so none of the bar noise disturbed me.

All in all, I can thoroughly recommend this hotel - a good find and one I would certainly use again.

  • Liked — Very comfortable room
  • Disliked — Not a great view, but that wasn't a problem

We stayed here for 2 nights whilst visiting Durham and were delighted that we had picked this hotel.

The hotel is very central and in fact a number of bars and restaurants are right on the doorstep, but don’t let this put you off as we didn’t hear any noise once in the room. In fact the hotel has a policy which allows you to claim a refund if things are too noisy and you can’t sleep. The hotel does have its own bar and restaurant but we didn’t worry with these as there was so much choice nearby. Breakfast did seem a little expensive at £7 when the near by Wetherspoons is £2.50

The rooms are very clean and nicely furnished….apart from a paid of socks which were under our bed …but these were quickly removed by house keeping

The main town centre is about 3 mins away, the cathedral and castle approx 10mins and the station about 10mins in the other direction. We would defiantly recommend a visit to the cathedral but if you decide to climb the tower make sure you are feeling fit!! We didn’t get to tour the castle as only available in the afternoons for limited time.

We went to two restaurants whilst there – Hide which is on the way to the Cathedral and Oldfields, a couple of mins from the hotel – we would recommend both but if you only have time then defiantly go to Oldfields (but you will need to book)

  • Liked — Location & cost
  • Disliked — socks left from previous guest!!

I stayed three nights with my wife for our silver wedding anniversary trip to see Durham City.
Great hotel. Lived up to the expectations I had got from reading reviews on here. Especially worth mentioning the cleanliness (immaculate), staff (very friendly and efficient) and location - everything worth visiting in Durham City is within walking distance, though I wouldn't recommend it for disabled people due to the uphill climb to the sights.
No free car parking but for £12 I got three days' multiple entry and exit to the big car park behind the hotel, which is good value for a city-centre car park if you look at it that way.
Also if you've never been before I would recommend finding it on Google Earth or Maps.live to see the approach roads as you could drive around for hours trying to get to it otherwise.

  • Liked — Cleanliness, staff, location
  • Disliked — No free car parking, restaurant a bit cramped

We stayed here for one night in mid-September. We decided to stay at another Premier Inn since we had such a good experience in York. I phoned the hotel while we were on the road and they were very helpful. We highly commend the staff at this hotel. They were professional and helpful and friendly. This includes the girls on the front desk as well as the dining room staff.
Our room was nice, although a bit small considering the bed was huge. We had no problem with noise but we were on the third floor, which probably made a difference.
Directly in the back of the hotel, is a flight of stairs that leads up to the high street and the cathedral. The hotel is in a very convenient location.
The evening meal and breakfast were both very good. The food was freshly cooked and the service was excellent. There is a good selection for breakfast, both continental and cooked.
We highly recommend this hotel.

  • Liked — The location and excellent staff
  • Disliked — Parking in the parking garage behind the hotel, but not that a big an issue really.
