“OK for locals”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 May 2014

During our three night stay at the Premier Inn just down the road, we decided to eat here on our first night.

First impression from outside - looked ok.

Stepped inside - locals all turned round to see who was coming in - bit off-putting

Dining room only had three tables occupied prior to the three of us coming in, four other people came in after us.

Only one young girl taking orders and serving both food and drinks which meant that the service was very slow.

Our main courses were ok however the sticky toffee puddings (2 out of our three desserts) were rubbery and the custard tasted like it had been watered down.

Just looked back on their website. Interesting reading.

They ask for feedback on their 'New Website' which shows their "2010 - 2013 Winner - Taste Durham" quality assured spoon logo and beside it you can view their "2013 Food Menu"

All in all 3 star Inn with 3 star quality food and service.

Time to update website, menu and service standards for 2014

went on living social deal but hardly anyone in restaurant and service very slow. we arrived at 1.10 and were abruptly told there was no way we could go into the "restaurant" before 130 so we sat til 130 and were annoyed that people who had come in after us were allowed in the restaurant before us even though they were sitting in the bar too waiting patiently for 130. the restaurant appeared quite dated, although some may think this adds to the charm of the old pub. there was not much selection for the starters or the dessert. we had the pate and the combo which were ok, not lush and not horrible. the beef dinner was nice, the yorkshire pudding was nice and the vegetables were plentiful. the main course was nice but could have been hotter. had the pineapple upside down cake and custard for dessert, was not that nice but as i said not much of a selection. we sat and waited for the bill (even though we did not owe anything , just thought it the courteous thing to do) but in the end we just left as no one came and asked if we had enjoyed the food. very much doubt we will be back. staff not attentive and service slow. food average.

I spent just one night in Lambdon Hounds Inn but it was a very pleasant stay. Single room I booked was the cheapest I could find in the whole area (38 pounds) and I was surprised by how cosy it felt. There was a bathtub, very much appreciated as I could take a long bath after walking all day.The pub itself looked typically English, with low ceilings, warm light and wooden panels. For breakfast there was a selection of cereals, toasts and cooked breakfast made at request. Coffee was really good and staff was friendly, so I would highly reccommend this place as it's a great value for money. The Inn is 40 minutes walk from railway station and less than an hour walk from Durham cathedral. There are also many takeaway Indian and Asian restaurants on the way to the city centre.

I thought there would have been a few more reviews on this pub as we couldn't get booked in for Sunday lunch for 2 weeks!
We decided to try this place as I used to work locally, so bought their offer of 3 course Sunday lunch on Living Social.

On arrival the car park at the back was busy which was a good sign! We went into the lounge and ordered drinks whilst we waited for our table. After 10 minutes we went into the restaurant. Cosy and busy (I think nearly everyone also had a voucher!) we were quickly offered menus and the pleasant waitress took our order. We had the mixed combo of onion rings, potato wedges and breaded mushrooms and I had the pate. Hot and quick but small portions. The main (both had Turkey) hot, quick but nothing to go wild about, then the pudding (my favourite!) - bread and butter pudding (disappointed, sad face) so opted for the strawberry gateau and cream (for me) and ice cream. Again small portions but OK.
We also had a glass of wine each.

All in all, an OK meal, like the previous review we wouldn't rush back as it was nothing special and a little too far for us to travel on a regular basis, but I do hope business improves from the offer as it was a lovely pub with lovely staff and these are few and far between nowadays,

Have just come back from a 2 night stay here. Was a little apprehensive on arrival because it doesn't look much on the outside. However there is a large car park at t he back. we received a good welcome. We had a family room which was large, clean and comfortable. There were plenty of pillows, a decent though small tv and a good sized shower room. We all slept well both nights. The towels were a little on the small side but that is often the case in other places. The restaurant is small. The menu offeres a good choice. I had fried calamari on the first night followed by a steak. My partner had garlic mushrooms which were delicious and salmon. My sone had prawn cocktail and pizza which was obviously freshly made. The calamari in particular was splendid. The following night we had variations of the theme. Breakfasts were good. A reasonable choice of cereal, tea coffee and toast. A shame about the cheap tiny pots of jam. The full English was lovely - really hot and consisting of a decent piece of bacon, a good quality pork sausage, egg, hash browns and decent baked beans. Certainly sets you up for the day. The pub offers three different real ales which my partner enjoyed. The pub does have live music sometimes but it stops at a sensible time. Well worth staying here. The owners are pleasant and the accommodation offeres good value for money - better than a chain hotel.

Like most people i searched for a local place to stay, couldn't have wished for a better place, arrived in Freezing rain, slush!!! Having parked the car I walked into a lovely warm Bar where the bar maid welcomed me with a big smile, I asked if rooms where available, The Land Lady gave me the double at the price of a single, it was comfortable, warm, en-suite bathroom. My evening in the bar was made by the locals being friendly, FREE Pool and DukeBox on a Sunday evening helped, Kitchen was closed after Sunday Lunch but the Barman found a menu from Local Take a way and it was acceptable to eat it in the pub. I will stay again and would recommend this to anyone requiring accommodation. Great value for Money.
