“Girls 40th birthday night away”
Reviewed 6 January 2013

Lovey hotel stayed here few times now so didn't hesitate to book a night away for me and my friends to celebrate my 40th birthday. Booked buisness class rooms as intended to make use of the inclusive bar but arrived too late to get seats in the small bar and did get a few frowns from older people sat reading newspapers as we were laughing as we walked in . Sorry thought we were in a bar not a library !! We asked if we could take drinks into the lobby and sit in the sofas out there and it was fine with the bar staff to do this and we were able to laugh out loud without being glared at! Reception girls were lovely as we're the youngsters on breakfast duty. Can't fault this hotel, clean comfortable safe and lovely riverside setting. Another enjoyable stay and my friends were all very impressed.

Attended a works Christmas Party and we all left shortly after eating. On entry drinks purchased at a high price. The room was very cramped and the dance floor was a joke. The food was terrible. I had expected better. 2 bowls of roasts for 22 people and not much gravy. What a waste of money. I will not be attending next year.

Situated on the bank of the river Wear with views of the river and the castle. This is a modern hotel minutes walk from bars, restaurants, shops and other attractions. The rooms are large and comfortable with American sized beds. Tea and coffee facilities are provided as well as an empty fridge to accomodate any items you desire to keep cool. An iron and ironing board are also available within the room. The bathroom is clean and well equiped with the added comfort of a heated tiled floor. The hotel also has a nice sized swimming pool, 2 saunas (one steam and one dry) and a gym.

Breakfast is not normally included in the price. For those with a large appertite then it is worth the money. I generally prefer to take a stroll into the city where there are a large selection of cafes offering a good selection of good home made food often at half the price.

I was not very impressed by the bar food at the hotel, (the restaurant being closed on the night we decided to eat in), so would not wish to repeat the experience. Having said that the restaurant menu looks enticing. There are also lots of good place to eat in close proximity to the hotel.

I have stayed at this hotel many times before and its my preferred choice when visiting the NE.

Room Tip: Ask for a river view.

A few niggles aside, noted by other reviewers, we slept well in a fair sized room facing the river. Breakfast was ample and leisurely with a range of good quality items. Pool quiet when we went with spacious sauna and steam room.

Durham is one of our favourite places for a weekend, and the Radisson Blu is where we stay. The hotel is very well designed, well appointed with lovely spacious rooms (exec class) with a bedroom area, a separate lounge area, a dressing area and an ensuite bathroom. For £125 per night including breakfast this is exceedingly good value. However value is just one of the plusses. All the pub,ic areas and rooms are spotlessly clean. Staff are very well trained at both reception, generally, and in the restaurant both at dinner and breakfast. The Filini menu is very good with plenty of choice and the food we ate tasted as if it could have been prepared and served in Tuscany. The puddings were wonderful. If we lived in Durham this would be a regular destination for eating out. Breakfast, buffet style was superb both in choice and quality. Overall this is how a contemporary hotel should be, but very rarely is. As it's the 3rd time we have stayed with this quality and level of service, it's clearly not an exception but the norm there. We will certainly stay again whenever we can and would highly recommend the hotel to others.

Room Tip: Book Exec if you can, it's worth the difference

For £32.00 per head the food was average taking into account the mass catering! The room however was very cramped and you were packed in like sardines I was almost sitting on the guys knee next to me there was so little room. The dance floor was tiny and the entertainment was poor that coupled together the drinks prices made for a very sobering evening which lacked atmosphere!!

we needed a room for one night on our way to collect our son from university in Newcastle and the rates were much better in Durham than Newcastle. We booked a business class room and it was larger than we expected with a separate sitting area. The room was very clean and bathroom likewise.
The bed was too hard for me but my husband found it fine.
Breakfast was self service with plenty of choice, all well cooked despite being very busy as this is the Christmas party season

We found the hotel quiet and everyone helpful and would recommend it if you are staying in Durham

Room Tip: ask for room over the river, we had the car park, not very pretty!!
