“Enjoyable”

Lovely hotel in a perfect location - only a 2 minute walk into town. Rooms clean, modern with air con, a mini fridge and tea/coffee. We didn't use the spa, but went to the gym and pool/sauna/steam room - very enjoyable and we were able to take my 9 month old swimming. Car park behind hotel - only negative is that I don't think guests should have to pay to use - it's £7 for 24 hours. Overall would definitely return.

As you'd expect from a Blu, clean, good standard of decor, generally good.

Main issue was that the double bed was two bed pushed together and a sheet thrown over the top - a giant ridge down the middle of the bed isn't great for sleeping on.

Other than that, free wifi is good and needed because phone reception in the hotel is non existent so wouldn't recommend for a business trip if you're on o2.

The good:
Location - 2mins walk to centre.
Room size - large, huge bed, well equipped bathroom, good placement of mirrors and power points.
Reception -chirpy and helpful. Local map provided and restaurant tips readily provided.

The bad:
Awful polyester filled pillows with no spring
Windows only open a few inches. For those who prefer natural air to aircon it made for a steamy 2 nights.

The ugly:
Breakfast service - the most disorganized arrangement I've ever come across. Queues to get in..with not enough staff on. Coffee ordered with waiter but get your own tea. Service slow. Very good selection of food.

The hotel itself offers excellent accommodation of an international standard. Rooms and facilities were very good with a nice view of the river. The swimming pool, sauna etc were also excellent. The gym also looked good although didn't get a chance to use it. Staff were also friendly and helpful. The downside was the food. We were only staying one night so decieded to use the restaurant. It has an Italian theme which means there was only limited choice if you don't want pasta or pizza. However being the second customers of the evening we were attended to promptly. As the evening went on a large party came in which seemed to take the attention of all the staff. As a consequence our pudding choice arrived after some 20 mins meaning we had to have a quick march to the Lindisfarne Gospels Exhibition. In the morning we also went for the English breakfast which was not up to the standard I would expect for the price and the category of the hotel. I informed the staff on check out of our disappointment with the food. So it would have had an excellent rating but was let down by the food.

Room Tip: Get a room on the front of the hotel with the river view.

My stay here was frustrating. Three nights on business was more of a chore than normal business trips due largely to the lack of attention to detail from the hotel, which appeared to be run exclusively by youngsters. I have nothing against young people, (I used to be one myself once).

As a compromise for a lack of upgrade, (as the hotel was full with coach loads of holidaymakers), I was offered business class facilities in a standard room. These facilities included free car parking, (usually £7.00 per night), and free breakfast.

I was put into an "Accessible Room", the bathroom of which had more grab handles than any able bodied person cares to wish for. Despite putting these handles into the storage positions each day, they were annoyingly returned to their useable positions by housekeeping. Also even though the bathroom being large enough for a black cab to pull a U-turn in, there was only one tiny shelf on which to place any belongings.

The room had a door to an adjoining room, which is one of my all-time pet hates! These normally just promote smells, noise and grief! The empty mini-bar doesn't promote a positive atmosphere, but this is becoming more commonplace in hotels these days. Other features of the room included a faulty lamp and a low frequency humming noise that drove me to distraction.

Two of the three mornings I was asked for payment for breakfast before being seated, which was not necessary as I was informed it was going to be free. Breakfast was fine, except for the DIY toast & DIY Tea!! Annoyingly, on the second night I was also asked to pay for room service as it was delivered to my room! Please note the £4.50 tray tax applied on all room service orders!

To top it all, the fiasco over my last night's room service was the pinnacle of incompetent customer service. I waited for over an hour, for my order not to arrive. I telephoned to enquire where it might be, and ended up waiting for ANOTHER hour for it to turn up. It was cold and inaccurate and missing the bottle of wine I had ordered with it. Needless to say I didn't eat (or pay for) this disastrous performance.

I won't be back, as I have better things to do with my life than explain to amaturish staff how to do their jobs! Must try MUCH harder!

The hotel has a wonderful location, right at the side of the river Wear and looking towards the city.
This place has all of the modern amenities and is one of the best in the area.
Lots of the guests are on business trips so the prices tend to reflect that.
Front desk staff are very good and are professional.
There is a large bar on the ground floor along with a restaurant.
The hotel is a popular venue for weddings and consequently the public areas including the bar can become quite crowded.
WIFI is included in the room price.
My room had a coffee maker, a refrigerator and facilities to make tea. Well it is England!
The parking lot is at the rear of the hotel and costs GBP 7.00 per day for guests of the hotel.

Room Tip: Get a room on a high floor overlooking the river. I paid the extra for a business class room on the...

New clean modern hotel close to Durham town centre. Everything works. Nice pool, spa and gym. Full English breakfast and buffet but avoid 8 till 9 as the staff are overwhelmed as is the case in most business hotels.. I can't comment on the evening meal as I find its always better to eat out than in a hotel.
Slightly bigger rooms than normal with quiet air conditioning. Helpful and efficient staff.
I've stayed in other hotels and paid a lot more for less.

Room Tip: When we arrived in the car park there was a cockerel near by giving it the beans. Ask for a room at...
