“So glad we stayed here”
Reviewed 14 March 2012

We've just returned from a weekend break in Durham and stayed at this hotel, we were so impressed by this hotel we thought we should write a couple of lines.
The hotel has excellent décor, some of best we’ve actually seen, we decided to eat steak in the restaurant on Saturday night before heading off into Durham and wow, we were glad we did as it was the best we’ve ever had.
The bar in the hotel is like a private grand clubroom where we was made to feel very welcome, the whole hotel is so elegantly decorated and the bedrooms are so cosy and nice you could stay in there all day n night. The rooms are very comfortable indeed. The staff were friendly and efficient throughout, The location is perfect for visiting Durham, we will definitely be returning for my wife’s birthday later in the year.

enjoyed our one night birthday stay in the indigo room.quality bed linen, towels and funishings in room, although it was on the small side this did not in anyway affect our stay.booked a meal in hotel restaurant which was to a very high standed, really enjoyed the food.staff polite and friendly, bar cosy, although they did run out off certain drinks.over all we would recommend this hotel to anybody wanting a night away.will be returning next year.

Room Tip: my tip would be to book a room on the top floor as we could hear the people above walking around.

Just stayed in the premier room for my boyfriends birthday and it was fantastic! Theres a big huge projector screen to watch your favourite films (mind they only supply a few so bring your own just incase) and two comfy cinema chairs with provided popcorn. The popcorn was O.K would of liked if the machine lit up to keep it warm... But the room looked lovely it was so clean and tidy! The bathroom was great apart from the shower was a bit fiddly to work out as it had so many features and couldnt manage to get radio to work in it and had a foot massage option which really was confusing which we never really got to work out either but it had nice lights and showers and jets in there. And the bath was really nice and big, great for a chill out. The jacuzzi was amaaaazzing! Best thing about the room but was a bit concerned of privacy because theres a house right next to you but wasnt really a big issue as I think we would have noticed if someone was overlooking and the view was greaaatttt! And you can use jacuzzi anytime you want, I think I was in it at 12 o clock at night and it was so warm, just totally relaxing. The bed was lovely too only problem we were REALLY bothered about was the blinds that covered up the windows and glass door. There was one side that was broken so it wouldnt flip close properly and where the handle was had been snapped off so it looked like a lovely peephole for people to stare into! Kept having nightmares I would wake up to find someone staring through it. But other than that it was great. Would want to go again and maybe try out another room with a jacuzzi :) Recommend to anybody its totally worth the £180 and the breakfast was great too :) woo

Well this was booked by my husband as a treat for our fourth wedding anniversary on 15th feb 2012. We were booked in the The Garden room, with a hottub. On arrival to the hotel, it looked a bit shabby from the outside, but once we got in it looked very decadent and cosy. Please be aware aswell that upon check in you have to pay a pre-authourisation of £175 EVEN THOUGH we had already paid for the room! Anyway, We were taken to our room, which on first inspection looked lovely, however looks can be very disceaving. My husband went to the toilet and noticed (before he had been) that the toilet was blocked and there was stale water and bits of poo everywhere, so we called reception and 'sophie' brought down the supposed 'maintenance guy', who brought with him a mop and bucket...he huffed and puffed and didnt seem to be getting anywhere with it so then another man was sent down with another mop....this guy was in his CHEF WHITES and started to help the other guy out, well that certainlyput me off eating in the restaurant!! I WOULD NOT EAT IN THAT RESTAURANT EVER!! Anyway we decided to have a walk around durham and get something to eat there. We left the key with the receptionist. After having a lovely meal out we got back to the room, and we were told that the toilet was sorted. So we decided to give the hot tub a try, well trust me it was far from hot, after i nearly drowned getting in it as the handle had broke in two ( and im a 5ft and a size 6 so not exactly obease) we discovered that the temperature would not go up any hotter than body temperature, also there was a filter floating on top, a cracked drinks tray in there, and there was slime and grit when you touched the bottom of the hot tub. Also the hottubs arent private, there was a flimsy canopy over the top of it but you could see into the restaurant balcony. Anyway, we decided to get out and my husband had a shower, my husband can spit harder than that shower, so its certainly not a nice power shower like i was expecting, the shower head was mouldy and cracked.I then went to use the toilet and it didnt flush, infact it was worse than before. We both just looked at each other and said 'Lets get outta here'. We were offered to use a different room (to which the value of that room was £85, my husband had paid £250 for ours) Why would anyone do that?? So we checked out, and are still arguing getting our money back with the hotel manager, she was supposed to call yesterday but were still waiting for that! I was a travel director for co-operative travel, and I have stayed in many luxurious hotels aswell as basic/budget, I would never recommend this hotel. What an absolute waste of money and time.

Room Tip: Pick a different hotel

Its not often that something surpasses your expectation but this did ! We stayed in the Indigo room which was lovely, with a huge HD TV on the wall and the huge double shower; you cannot fail to be impressed. The room was immaculately clean and as part of staying there we received two valentine cup cakes and Moulton Brown toiletries set. The hotel is very central so only a short stroll into the centre of Durham. Although the hotel was busy, it was also very quiet so we had a great nights sleep. The breakfast in the morning was superb and all locally sourced. The only issue I could see causing problems was that there is no parking, however as we stayed a Sunday night the on street parking was free so that was also good for us!!

My partner & I stayed here Friday . . . . .i cannot fault this place at all. From arrival the staff were extremely pleasant & helpful, the decor in the hotel is very sumptuous & decadent.
We stayed in Le Jardin our room/lodge was a treat with grass effect carpet, nice decoration & mini sauna, the bathroom has a roll top bath with separate shower which was amazing, the room looks out over Durham cricket ground it has its own decked balcony with hot tub, it was quite private (no feeling of being overlooked at all). We didnt eat in the restaurant, however when we return (definately) we will !!!
