“A perfect hotel in keeping with Durham”
Reviewed 2 February 2014

If you are going to the historic town of Durham you should avoid the big hotels as they dont capture the city. Gadds Town House describes itself as a restuarant with rooms but this is misleading. It is a crackingly good hotel in a sympathetically converted Georgian Town House ( mid 1700s?) The rooms are full of atmosphere but with all modern amenities, my room had an excellent roomy modern shower. The restaurant & bar are really pleasant places to linger and the staff are excellent. Located on Old Elvet the hotel is handy for all sightseeing and restaurants and is just the right distance from the centre to not be troubled by those oh so over exuberant students who think it is so clever to shout at each other as they stagger down the street at 2am!
Highly recommend this place, you wont be disappointed. Only one word of caution, this is a historic property and therefore does not have a lift. If you cant manage stairs then it may not be for you. ( Staff will very happily carry your bags for you though)

Myself & my partner stayed here for the night at the weekend as a birthday surprise. The hotel is beautiful we stayed in the bijoux loft which is a slightly smaller room however it does say this on the website and was not lacking in luxury. Staff here are excellent very friendly and went out of there way for us. Will definitely be back :)

We stayed for my 40th birthday, I had been wanting to stay at this hotel for some time. The design of the room, hot tub and little extras where great however I felt it was a little shabby. The blind in the bathroom was scruffy, the decorative ball fell off the curtain tie back and the wooden blinds had a slat broken resulting in a gap and people could see into the room. We reported this to reception however nothing was done about it. It's a shame as its a great concept and venue

We booked Gadds Town House for the first time only because there weren't very many places to stay that hadn't already been booked up. We travelled to Durham for a university visit which coincided with the Lumiere event (didn't realise until we arrived and checked in....!)
We were really glad there was a room available because it is an excellent place to stay and we would definitely book there again,
We booked the Ruby room and were really impressed! The bed is huge and very comfortable; there is a large, deep bath at the foot of the bed, which was new to us but didn't spoil the room; and the bathroom was like a wet room with plenty of room and a very good shower.
Breakfast was very good and is served in the restaurant area towards the back of the building.
The Georgian building is beautiful and we didn't expect the decor to be as it was when we walked through the front door - we really like it.
We didn't have a drink in the bar but we did dine in the restaurant and have reviewed this separately.
Gadds town House is really close to the centre of Durham (5 minute walk) and all the attractions.

Room Tip: The Ruby room overlooks the road and the green but wasn't noisy. There is a great bath in this...

Found on internet booking site and phoned direct. Pleased to be offered rate better than advertised online by others. Unique accommodation, very comfortable, excellent staff and first class restaurant.

Room Tip: The Cruise Room had everything and at a better rate than other rooms.

My wife and i stayed for one night in Amethyst which, as another reviewer has outlined is very black and quite quirky. I also noted the peeling paint in the bathroom (see photo )which was poor and the shaving mirror which is damaged to the point that it is unusable. This was mentioned by another contributor two months ago and its still shabby. Why - its not as if the management don't know?

More worrying was that state of the throw on the bed which looked like someone had thrown up on it - see photo. Simply revolting and unnecessary if housekeeping are doing their job.
Parking was easy - across the road from 8am-6pm @ 50p per hour. Dinner was very good quality and well cooked, although service was somewhat slow and almost non existent in the bar area.

It is worth pointing out that this hotel is up for sale and I fear that this indicates that the management seem laissez faire when it comes to maintaining basic standards. Pretty good but not worth 'very good'.

I booked a night here as part of my new wife's wedding present and we had a great time. We stayed in the Eden Lodge with our own private hot tub and it was fantastic. We had a great time in Durham and the food in Gadds was excellent. We're definitely going back !

Room Tip: Eden room was great with it's own very private outdoor hot tub
