Just stayed in the garden room for three nights. No wardrobe no space, reminiscent of a B and B. Was so looking forward to dinner but what a disappointment!! Starter arrived stone cold, the main course was overcooked and yet there were only four people in the restaurant. Needless to say did not eat there again. The cleaner found dirty clothes in our room after two nights (not ours), but no apology no nothing. Breakfast was ok but they could not bring what you ordered. Two eggs or nothing!!.. I would not go there again no matter what. Seriously overpriced and not worth the money. Suggest they get their act together.

Room Tip: Don't book it!!

We stayed one night in the ship shape Cruise room. The room was great - a lovely period piece decorated to look like an old fashioned cruise ship cabin. It was also really comfortable with everything you could possibly need and more. The staff were welcoming, helpful, attentive and friendly and in the morning the breakfast was delicious.

Although I have headlined the excellent value offered by Gadds Town House, I think its biggest plus is the super-charged team of friendly young women who cosset their guests.
It's comfortable, well equipped and decorated with cosy quirkiness, in a pretty street just a short walk from the Cathedral and University colleges. It offers an entire separate menu of cocktails, a generous breakfast, and a full 3-course Sunday lunch for £20. This comprised lavish roast beef (mine was red and juicy, my wife's her usual deep mahogany) with skyscraper Yorkshire puddings and everything else you'd expect. Preceded by varied starters and followed by puddings, this comprised quite amazing value for money. Considering we were a table of 15, this was important.
There are just a few puddings I will travel far for: crepes suzettes, proper nougat glacé and Zabaglione. Here they produced a marvellous combination of the latter two: zabaglione in the form of a properly iced mousse: fabulous!
So: which room? Warned against the outside annexe (slippy steps, slow bathwater) we were in Express, which is recommended, up a short flight of shallow steps, very easy for the tortoise brigade, and had a neat bathroom with masses of speedy hot water.
This is definitely the best place to stay in Durham. Reasonable prices, good position, good food, and outstanding staff.

Room Tip: First floor rooms best.

Had a night here last weekend to celebrate the other half's birthday and what an experience! Sneaked away for a romantic weekend and could not have asked for a better setting. This place oozed charm and quality from the minute we walked through the door; chandeliers, deep padded upholstery and exotic rich drapes and deep, dark inviting wall décor. We loved it, a real Georgian townhouse. This place is described as a restaurant with rooms, 11 in total and all are themed differently. Check out the pictures on their web site. We stayed in the 'Rouge Room' and its rich lavishness was equally as stunning as the glass shower in the room, very bordello and such fun. The only downside was the room's heating, it was roasting in that room and the air con seemed to struggle. Overall, we rated out stay here very highly and it is definitely on the list for a re-visit to try one of their other themed rooms. Word of caution, leave the kids at home, this is an adults paradise!

A lovely hotel. The decor is striking and the staff are very friendly. I stayed in the Bijou Loft which was very comfortable. Breakfast the next morning was delicious and as the sun was shining, I wish I had sat outside!

Vintage looking hotel. Tranquil views. Friendly staff. Themed rooms are awesome. Food should be Michelin starred it looked good and tasted even better. Small bar with a wide variety of drinks. More of a couples hotel and not kid friendly. Not for stags or hens. Nice walks and views of the water and castle :)

Stayed for one night in the Edwardian Express room, situated in a quiet street with free parking after six on Saturday and all day Sunday. Very friendly and professional staff, beautifully decorated public rooms. Our room was themed well, with a lovely bathroom, but perhaps a touch tired - one of the posters was peeling off the wall. Breakfast was great very well cooked and a good choice, we did have to send a lipstick marked cup back though.
In a good location near the town centre we would return and perhaps try one of the garden rooms.
