“Not as advertised”
Reviewed 28 July 2013

After reading positive reviews we were extremely disappointed with this place. We intended to stay for two nights but left after the first to find somewhere better.
We had the last available room and it was dreadful. The bathroom fan was broken so had no ventilation and it was a hot day but they hadn't opened any windows so the room smelt very damp. The bathroom was very dated - the shower over the bath was either freezing or boiling. The bathroom light was broken and the light pullcords were brown and disgusting. The hotel is between two main roads so every room will be noisy with busy traffic.
All this and just a continental breakfast for £95!
We complained to the staff who were very friendly and sympathetic but there was nothing they could do. The owner refused to speak to us directly and hid behind his staff (via the phone), which was poor. We were informed that he knew about the problems with the room and an electrician was coming out that day to fix them.
This was clearly a lie:
1. We had the room booked for that day - was the electrician going to work whilst we were in it? Why hadn't we been informed?
2. My husband is an electrician and said that shower required a plumber to fix it.
3. If the owner knew that the room was sub-standard then why was he charging full price for it?
So we left and found a very lovely B&B for just £68 a night with full cooked breakfast and a fully functional, clean bathroom!
I can't speak for the food but I would not recommend staying here. It is not worth the amount they charge.

A friend recommended this place and we really kind of liked it. It was not what we expected, but the staff, particularly Sapphira, were so kind and helpful, that it was a real treat. Our room was in the front, so we got some traffic noise, but it was ok by 11 or so. Room was clean and had two adequate beds--a bit hardish, but not that bad. The attached pub was wonderful--really good beer and some outstanding food, particularly the sticky toffee pudding (oh my!). The shower mechanism was incomprehensible, but when we said it wasn't working, the handyman went up and figured out that it was--we just didn't know how to work it.
It's not luxurious, by any means, but I think it was a special place that was a nice change from chain hotels.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not facing the road if road noise bothers you. Great location and an easy walk from...

Myself and my wife stayed here on the 2nd and 3rd June in room 3.

We stayed with the intention of going to Chester Le Street for the cricket (Durham V Lancashire). Firstly if your going to the cricket (perhaps the upcoming Ashes series) then the public transport system is superb. The number 21 bus stops directly across the road from the hotel and is a 15 bus ride to Chester Le Street (the bus stop there is a 10 minute walk to the ground). Cost £5 for a return and runs regularly until late.

The hotel is also a short 10 minute walk to Durham city centre, ideal location

The room was very clean and well decorated. My only minor groan is that the traffic from the main road can be noisy however that didn't effect us at all.

The staff where lovely and compliments to the owner for his taste in music in the bar (loving The Doors playing whilst having a pint in the sun).

Also you get a good continental breakfast of cereals, fruit, toast, pastries, teas, coffee and juice.

My wife & I stayed one night in this hotel. Staff where friedly and helpful. The room we had was very clean and the bed was extremely comfortable. Would definetly recomend this hotel. The bar downstairs serves some nice beers. Try the Swedish Blonde if they have it on.

Stayed here for our first wedding anniversary, the room was spacious and comfortable we were given room 3 which was on the main road side of the inn and found it to be very noisy especially at night as the inn is only a short distance from the hospital and did not have double glazing. The bathroom was ok could do with upgrading the shower mixer on the bast to a thermostat mixer as my wife burnt herself as it was impossible to stabilize the temperature.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the Inn away from the main road

My husband, daughter and myself have eaten here before, so we decided to have a late lunch today, because of all our working commitments, it is great to be able to get together once a week and have somewhere decent still serving after 3pm on a Sunday. Most places have finished or give you stale, burnt offerings. Not here, we have always had beautiful dishes, fresh, interesting and modern cuisine, not the usual Sunday dinner with over cooked vegetables and hard yorkshires! The owners/chefs really seem to be trying to give a whole dining experience with good wine and surroundings. A simple menu which easy to execute well. A better family environment and no football in every corner. A little subtle three-piece band (jazz or something similar) in the corner would make a final touch, from about 3pm onwards, then people might not leave and stay until 8pm or so to listen to the band and have a few drinks to round off a lovely weekend. Service lets them done.
