Just returned from an overnight stay celebrating our anniversary. Accomodatiom excellent, service excellent, food excellent. The staff where very helpful polite and friendly could not fault them. I cannot understand why anyone would complain about this lovely hotel. Tony the manager was so helpful. I will return to Lumley Castle and I would certainly reccomend it to anyone who is thinking of staying there, in my opinion you would not be dissapointed.

Room Tip: Room 52 lovely four poster

Just got back from a short break at Lumley Castle this place is incredible can't understand why anyone would complain about anything at this hotel, it is stunning. The staff are superb really friendly and helpful, the breakfast was fantastic (unfortunately we did not get around to eating in at night but would definitely do so the next time) the Black Knight dining room/restaurant is incredible with vaulted ceiling and the castle staff all wear costume in keeping (but do have the most comfortable and very large bed) with the era (a nice touch).

We stayed in the courtyard rooms which although a bit small were were absolutely beautifully decorated and Immaculate. What you must realise is you are staying in a very old castle so plumbing might seem bit old but its all part of the charm if you want ultra modern then try elsewhere. So a big thank you to all the staff at Lumley Castle you have it just right.

Everything about this hotel is romantic, charming and very comfortable. Next time we go we will treat ourselves to the luxury of the larger rooms.

Went to Lumley Castle with a friend for a mid morning coffee and a sandwich. Had to seek out a waitress to be served. Coffee took an age to be delivered and arrived in three parts - cups first, then the hot milk followed a few minutes later by the pot of coffee! Service was absolutely awful. Sandwich was nothing special. Once again we had to seek out a waiter to ask for the bill as there was no service in the library bar. I had to go into the Black Knight restaurant to ask for the bill . We paid and left the bill and cash behind the unattended bar - incidentally the time was 12.45pm. Need to sort out customer service and staffing levels ... Left feeling most unwelcome and very dissapointed.

Lumley Castle is a fantastic hotel inside an original medieval castle.

We booked a Groupon deal (bed and breakfast + a bottle of wine and box of chocolates for £129) and it was great value. We were given a courtyard room that had a historic feel while also being very comfortable.

The grounds and courtyard are lovely to explore, just be careful that you don't end up in the background of somone's wedding photos as the castle is wedding central on weekends!

Breakfast was great, cold buffet and cooked breakfast to order - the eggs benedict were amazing!

Although the castle is about 15 mins drive from Durham itself it's well worth staying here just for the atmosphere and experience. The walk up rate of £229 per night (room only) is crazy, but if you can book in advance and get a deal, go for it!

Got a great deal on groupon, upgraded to a castle room which was fantastic. Arrived at the hotel before 3pm so reception told us about the lounge where we had a lovely homemade afternoon tea.

Went to our castle room which was beautiful and had a lovely soft bed, had dinner in the black night restaurant which is one of the best meals and service i have every had i would recommend the belly pork and hubby the cod.Never had dessert as still alittle full from afternoon tea but there looked good.

Would recommend and defentley go back tomorrow.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a castle room well worth it

This was our first stay at Lumley despite being recommended to us on numerous occasions. We took advantage of a Groupon deal and we upgraded to a feature room and we stayed in Room 49. What a fabulous room it is, the bathroom being through the wardrobe fascinated us. The four poster was so beautifully ornate and it definitely put a smile on our face. Actually we had a smile on our faces for our whole stay.
Every member of staff we encountered was courteous, pleasant and helpful and all had smiles for us too.
We ate in the Black Night restaurant, the team in there did us proud. We both had the signature dish which was amazing, cooked to perfection, and presented beautifully. Nothing was too much trouble and when we went in for dinner the restaurant was full. We were last out and having spoken with the very friendly team who all have been together for years in itself is a tribute to Lumley.
We had a splendid nights sleep in our opulent surroundings.
Breakfast again was excellent the morning team were equally as good as the previous nights team and all are to be complimented on their commitment to please.
Check in and check out was a pleasure. Lumley Castle delivers on every level we thank you.

My husband and myself stayed overnight at Lumley Castle on Saturday 24 March taking advantage of a Group-On deal which entitled us to bed and breakfast in a courtyard room and 20% off our evening meal in the restaurant for £99! And what a bargain it turned out to be.

As part of the deal we also found a lovely chilled bottle of white wine and a box of continental chocolates waiting for us in our room when we arrived, which was a lovely touch. We found every single member of staff to be exemplary from the ladies on reception and the guy who served in the library bar, to the waiting staff who serve us for both our evening meal and at breakfast the next day. We truly could not fault a single thing about our visit.

During the afternoon, we took advantage of the glorious weather and sat enjoying our wine on the terrace at the front of the castle where we had a great view of three separate bridal parties arriving.
