Lovely castle setting on golf course. Reception very welcoming and room was lovely. However evening meal was stone cold as they made us order in bar and then let it out immediately after seating; even before we had ordered a drink! Feel very rushed. Breakfast was worse than a Premier Inn and servers wore dirty clothes from days before. All in all I wouldn't return unless someone else paid!

Great Castle Hotel.
Interesting feature rooms.
A little limited on food selection during the day - eg no bar snacks till after 3pm!?
Lovely setting worth a nights stay.
Reception checkin good and quick, feels little dated in places - an old castle with old fashioned ideas.
Bathroom through the wardrobe a lovely room feature!

Spent the night in this wonderful building. The building itself was all it was all it had promised....You could get lost wandering round the maze of rooms. We had a good size room with fourposter bed and a massive fireplace. The bath was a feature in the room. I must admit it was a bit dark especially in the bathroom, putting makeup on was a challenge!

We had opted for the Elizabethan Medieval Banquet - In hindsight this was a mistake on our part as you really needed to be with a big group to get the most out of it. We felt a bit isolated even though we did chat to our neighbours. And sorry to say if I'm honesty the food wasn't great....Authentic Medieval possibly?

However I would stay here again if I had the opportunity and opt for the restaurant!

I must admit I didn't pay for the night in castle, though I suspect other reviewers comments of it being overpriced / expensive are probably right. But, I really enjoyed it and we got lost numerous times trying to find various rooms (though added the fun of it). The library bar was brillant, literally a serving hatch in the middle of a library. We didn't eat in the restaurant but the bar food was decent. Breakfast was excellent with a wide range available.

Room Tip: We had a room int he castle rather than courtyard, but try to avoid a room near a hall over the week...

Expected much more for the money I paid in all honesty. At £150 per night, for a pretty small room (Room 15) and an average breakfast the next day I think it was pretty overpriced. The location and building itself is great but I wouldn't return unless I really had to.

Service wasn't particularly good, no directions to our room, no one took our order at breakfast. All in all pretty disappointing from a place that I expected a lot from.

Had another good stay at Lumley Castle, eating in the restaurant each night the foods very good

The room was well serviced and OK for a 2 night stay "it was a bit small".. They are starting to looking a bit shabby around the edges and if this is not rectified it will become tired. Just needs a bit of a update but still keeping the period features.

Reception and restaurant staff we friendly and helpful, will stay again

Room Tip: Try and stay in the new Stable Block behind the Courtyard

The hotel should be complimented on its wonderful, friendly and professional staff, it was a joy to be treated so well. We had a state room ( room 49 ) whereby the bathroom entrance was via the wardrobe, a really quirky feature. However, the bathroom lacked any heating whatsoever so towels could not be aired after use and a lack of lighting could be a little dodgy when shaving.

The bar staff were excellent and had a great sense of humour yet remained professional at all times. The restaurant serving both breakfast and dinner had a good ambience but the cooked breakfasts were rather basic, bland, unappetising and poorly presented. Dinners were good but limited in choice and overpriced for a 4 star hotel. As a typical English castle the menu should show more English fayre to give visitors the whole English experience. The hotel has a captive clientele as far as dining is concerned, you would have to travel to Chester-Le-Street or Durham for alternative dining, which can be a pain.

On this occasion the hotel was not very busy so our stay was very relaxing and a great place to get away from it all. Definitely recommended!

We have stayed in the castle on several occasions over the years and attended the mediaeval banquet which is a fun occasion with a good atmosphere.

Room Tip: Spend a little more and stay in a stateroom within the castle. King James suite is fantastic and roo...
