“Voucher stay”
Reviewed 24 August 2013

My parents purchased the voucher for us available for a 1 night stay for 2 in the court yard so we decided to go mid week. Easy booking and checking in, friendly staff and helpful. Our courtyard room was in theme of the hotel but was in need of a little tlc but the bed was comfortable and clean. With the voucher we qualified for 20% discount off our restaurant bill so we booked in for evening meal. We were both very impressed with the food, it was absolutely delicious and very elegantly presented. The staff were friendly and attentive and approachable. We had soup and tai fish cakes for starters, chicken dishes for mains and chocolate dessert. The food was amazing, so delicious!
Breakfast is served in the restaurant which I love as the room has so much character. Menu choices were available for eg, eggs benedict etch, though for cereals, fruit juice, etc we had to go into the hall way as that's where the tables were set out. This proved to be a hustle as other were trying to pass and serve themselves and no order which was just awkward.
Overall is was a pleasant stay but would not be rushing to book the courtyard hotel room but will return for the restaurant.

First time I have ever stayed in a castle, impressive drive up to the hotel and a late check in. My bedroom was situated in one of the outer building No 41 not the actual castle probably old stables, the room was themed on Olde world not really my cup of team but the room was spacious and well equipped.

The lock opening the bedroom door was very stiff and felt as if the key might snap and the mattress was a little lumpy...might have been stuffed with straw for authenticity !!

The bar and reception staff where all dressed in medieval dress which holiday stayers seem to love, we got to the bar at 7pm but were told a table in the restaurant wasn't available until 8pm so a bit of a wait.

The menu was great which matched the food when it arrived it was delicious and the restaurant was packed. We also stayed for breakfast and again it was great and very cheery staff.

One word of advise to the hotel....clear up your reception area behind the desk doesn't look professional when storing a vacuum and mops put in a cupboard out of site !!

Room Tip: Perhaps ask for one in the actual castle, I booked through expotel o the company and the price was o...

I had read the reviews before visiting Lumley Castle and had some concerns. However we needn't have worried. The room (21) was fantastic, very spacious with a lovely canopy bed, bathroom and fluffy towels. The castle had a lovely atmosphere -very different to the boutique hotels we often stay in. We ate in the Black Knight restaurant and the food was delicious - one of the best meals we have ever had. The staff were all very attentive without being obtrusive. We got a good deal at £79 for the night and will definitely go back in the near future.

Room Tip: The courtyards rooms are lovely and still part of the castle.

Had a one night stay in mid August as part of my family visiting duties. Delighted to be offered (and accepted) a complementary upgrade to a "romantic break" (meaning nicer room, chocolates and a bottle of champagne). The room was one of the newer court yard rooms which which recently built, looked once inside, like they had been there for centuries. A four poster bed was welcome (although not sure why we love them so much - maybe just the idea) and the decor was old styling and comfy. I've stayed here before and the hotel style is very much "castle-chic" so some of the other reviewers may not have picked that up.

The restaurant was super and a 14oz steak came with bone I could have used as a handle if I had not been more refined. Lovely meat. Companion's duck was the best too. And lovely staff and service all weekend just completed the whole thing.

Breakfast was a bit mad (think I saw the wedding party referred to in previous reviews) but everyone coped and everyone seemed to eat. A great break and a lovely place.

We stayed here on a Travelzoo deal and looked at the hotel website before booking to review the hotel and menus. The food looked really good. Our first impressions of this beautiful old castle were good and the reception staff very friendly. Whilst our room was very small and dark it was full of character and we liked it. The bathroom was very good.
We went for a drink in the bar before dinner and having read the menu in reception beforehand, were surprised to be handed a sheet of A4 with a few cheaper end dishes listed and we were told that this was because we were on 'a deal'. As other people in the bar had proper menus this was both disappointing and humiliating. We were eventually allowed to choose from the a la carte menu and sat down to enjoy our drinks. We were then told that the restaurant was ready for us and were taken into the beautiful dining room. After 45 minutes and some complaints we eventually got our starter!! We had been so much looking forward to the evening and the experience was not one that I would want to repeat. The food when it eventually arrived was very good.
I would probably recommend this hotel for bed and breakfast - the breakfast was excellent as was the service at breakfast - but our stay was ruined by the level of customer service in the evening which appeared to be significantly lower because we were staying on 'a deal'.

The castle is a lovely place to stay.....exquisite reception area, lounges, passageways and dining room with large state rooms upstairs if you care to visit.
The staff are exceptional...friendly and helpful. Breakfast was served in the Black Knight Restaurant and with weddings and cricket on at the same time the place was heaving each morning.....but the staff coped admirably with efficiency and humour and the cooked breakfast was still hot and fresh.
The dinner menu was varied and the food good....we stayed four nights and had no trouble choosing different each night.

So what was wrong....the courtyard room was spacious and cosy...
But oh so gloomy....maybe it was supposed to be like that but perhaps one bright light to read the paper? The furniture was tired looking and inadequate. One small free standing wardrobe and not one decent size drawer to put your socks in.
The bathroom was well appointed and clean but again so gloomy......anyone wet shaving or wanting to apply makeup should bring a torch with them
One slither of soap was supplied for four nights and ONE face cloth ....come on Lumley this room cost us over £1000 for four nights.

we had a night here before the cricket in chester le street and found it charming. The room was very sweet, and the garden lit up at night was a real treat. The breakfast was above average- they can make good scrambled eggs- and good service. So much better experience than one of the modern "executive" hotels one often books.
