Over night on our way to Edinburgh , couldn't fault it, rooms clean, fluffy towels , clean white sheets, clean bathroom, food excellent , service good , what a great place just to chill out .Staff were local and all friendly and helpful. My friend who was with us from Australia couldn't believe we were staying in a castle (neither could we actually) , we love to go back .

Room Tip: the courtrooms are small , but I loved them they were clean and cosy

Up for the cricket I lucked out with a twin room B&B for just under £100 - this is a great spot. Really interesting buildings and nice staff. The room was absolutely fine and breakfast very good with a short walk down the hill to Emirates Durham.

We booked to feature rooms with four poster beds. Our daughters got room 46. This was the room that Shane Watson (Australian test cricketer) was put into when there was some to do about ghosts! Indeed, room 46 is where the priests tortured & murdered Lily of Lumley and dropped her body down the well.

Anyway, we also booked dinner. We enjoyed a bottle of Prosecco in the bar whilst our steak order was being prepared. I ordered a 14oz rib eye, on the bone - cooked medium to ensure that the fat seam does its job. Just beautiful (helped with a bottle of Merlot). The wife and daughters had medium rare sirloin steaks, equally excellent, they said.

Next morning, the cooked breakfast was served quickly and I had a Kipper. It was amazing - a whole kipper expertly de- boned. First class.

The staff were brilliant and were all beautifully spoken locals.

Brilliant.

we live about 40 minutes drive from here and I booked this as a treat for my husband and I. It cost £79 for both of us b & b and we knew that we were in a courtyard room rather than the actual castle. Check in was 3pm and we arrived at 2.45, hoping we might be able to check in early, some hope!! We arrived to find 2 wedding parties milling around and a very pleasant lady on reception told us our room would be ready 'in about half an hour' (ie late but no actual apology was made for this). It was a nice day so we sat in a little inner courtyard and enjoyed 'people watching'. Husband went back to reception at 3.20, to be told it would be 'another few minutes, maybe come back in half an hour'. We were finally given the keys at about 3.55.No actual apology was made and as there were 2 weddings going on we didn't say anything. The courtyard area is lovely but the first part, what looks to be the original stable block is situated around a car park and we were apprehensive that this would be noisy (however I suspect these rooms might have been better?). But to get to our room (no 81) we went through a door in the stable block and outside to another much quieter courtyard surrounded by a newish looking building built in the style of the other older block. Our room was TINY, room for the bed and a tiny window and not much else. The bathroom was nice and quite spacious, there was an extra little 'offshoot' which doubled as a 'walk in wardrobe' but this was quite awkward to get to, having to shuffle past the dressing table to get to it. The bed was very comfortable, however we stay extensively in travel lodges and premier inns and have just spent a few days in a premier inn in London, paying £70 per night B & B for us and our 2 children and we had to admit that the premier inn room was better. We walked into chester le street (about 15 minutes) where there are lots of pubs and a nice indian restaurant called the Himalayan and then got a taxi back. Breakfast was 'nice', no more than that. I agree with the previous review that the location of the serve yourself cereals & continental breakfast was awkward. Orders for cooked breakfast were taken at the table and it was very nice but nothing special .We had to ask for butter as there was none at the table and we spent quite a long time trying to catch someone's eye to come and take our order. The lady who took our order repeated it back to us but when the breakfasts arrived, my order was wrong The dining room is lovely and it was busy but there were loads of staff, some clearing tables when we were trying to catch their eye. We both agreed that the orange juice tasted 'suspect'!! Best comparison I can give is when we were running out at home once and I tried to water it down a bit!!! We would consider going back to stay in one of the castle rooms but would not stay in the courtyard rooms.

We attended our nephew's wedding reception in the Castle and it was a lovely venue, with plenty of old world character and an interesting history that provided a genuine ambience of days gone by. Our room was in the courtyard- I suspect that these were the former stables, it was rather small and dark and there were a fair number of stairs to negotiate with all our luggage. However, it was clean and the bed was comfortable but if we were to return, we would prefer one of the larger, (albeit, more expensive) rooms, in the castle itself. The food that was served for the wedding supper was OK - the breakfast was very good- lots of choices and the restaurant itself provided a real "castle" atmosphere. Overall, an enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: If you are there during a hot spell- the second story rooms in the courtyard, are NOT a good choice...

I booked this for myself , husband and 2 friends from Australia ,as a special treat ,
She could not believe the castle ,
800 yrs old ,We stayed in the castle , They were 2 weddings going on .
The service that the staff give us was superb, so friendly , the meals fantastic,
Breakfast had every thing you could want for
We were on the first floor our friends on the 2nd floor, Both rooms were beautiful,
The bathrooms spotless , the towels so soft and fluff,
We are thinking of returning for a banquet meal with some other friends nearer to Christmas.
No pool or gym , but I do not think they were around 800yrs ago

I've been a couple of times to the banquet nights and stayed plus I stayed on business as well. It's a lovely place to get your head down. Nice and quiet with comfortable rooms, it is expensive but I think it's worth it as a treat.
