I stayed for one night and had dinner in the Black Knight restaurant (a la carte menu).
Overall very comfortable and the atmosphere was what you'd expect of a castle, "enchanting".
I can imagine why so many wedding receptions are staged there!

I think that the staff were all up to the job, from Receptionist to dining room waiters and waitresses.

Food was really good and well presented; I had the "signature dish" fillet steak and a cheese board to follow. Portions about right in both cases and the service was quick but not "rushed".

If there was one tiny negative, I feel that the signage inside and outside the castle could be improved and secondly, for the rate card room prices, this hotel ought to have built a spa/pool centre by now.

Anyone visiting the North-East might find it worthwhile staying here, even if for the odd night.

Room Tip: If you are up for a romantic stay, you ought to book a room in the castle itself, rather than one of...

Stayed one night for our anniversary we were upgraded to a room in the castle room43 very different from the usual boring hotel rooms of big chains. The staff were a credit to the hotel everything you asked was not a problem and they made you feel very welcome. Food excellent big portions beware if you have not got a hearty appetite!!!!! Altogether a fabulous hotel with great staff and in beautiful surroundings. We will definitely go again

Thanks to all concerned in making our stay wonderful

Room Tip: Try and a room in the castle they are a great experience.

Spend one night only there. Breathtaking view and castle. Unfortunately the service is not the best one ; few of waitresses not really friendly, food coming so fast, you barely have time to finish your appetizer or mean course. You don't really feel "welcome". Extremely pity because this place is a paradise !

Booked via the Romance in the Castle deal, 1st impressions very good, hotel grounds were immaculate. We found our way to a very authentic reception area, which sets the scene very nicely. We were also lucky to be given a free upgrade to a 4 poster room, which was very nice. The furniture in the room looked pretty worn and could do with a fresh lick of paint. We also had a problem with the toilet, it basically didn’t flush. We reported this to reception and were told it would be sorted.

We then went to the Black Knight Restaurant, which was again very authentic. The food was lovely, couldn’t fault it. But some of the service was pretty rubbish, plates and cutlery being slammed down, having to open your own wine. Just small touches that could be very easily improved and make the whole experience a lot more pleasant.

On return to our room we were informed our toilet could not be fixed and had to use a toilet in another room up stairs as they were full and had no doubles left. We were informed we would be compensated for this the next morning. We received a £20 discount from a rather rude/inhospitable manager, which I thought was pretty disgraceful but couldn’t be bothered to argue.

We had a good stay overall. But there were quite a few points that could have made this stay a lot better (if there was a 3 & ½ * I’d award that).

Had very good castle view room which was a good size with large bath and separate WC. The staff were very helpful and friendly and made our stay a wonderful experience. Restaurant dinner was fantastic and the service great and this was the same for the next mornings breakfast. Free wifi available.

We booked a courtyard room for £79
The room was lovely and spotlessly clean, with plenty of tea, coffee, hot chocolate, green tea etc.
We had called in advance to ensure the hotel had wifi. When we tried to connect, on all 3 of our devices, it didn't work. It worked in the reception area, but no where else. We went to reception and were told a porter would come to reset it.

2 hours later...the porter reset it, but this made no difference, so off we went to reception again and were told ten mins and it would be sorted. It never was! This resulted in us spending a lot of our stay, sitting in reception as this was the only place the wifi worked! We asked to change to a room where it was working but were told the hotel was full. However, a quick check on late rooms showed at least 4 available rooms.

Whilst in reception, we witness someone randomly upgraded to a castle room at no extra charge. This left is thinking, why not us? We also witnessed another customer being shown to their room by a porter who also carried their bags. All we got was a point in the right direction!

Shortly after our arrival, we politely asked reception if we could have 2 wine glasses. They said that someone would bring them. They never arrived.

The room itself was spot on but let down by very poor service.

The breakfast was included and was nice. Not worth the £14.95 they would charge you if it wasn't included, but very nice nonetheless and service in the restaurant was good.

Room Tip: Room 87 was on the ground floor with big windows, and therefore lots of light.
