We stayed overnight as part of the Elizabethan New Year package as guests of my son and daughter in law who were over here on holiday from Singapore
The Banquet it's self was ok in as much as the entertainment team were brilliant but the food was decidedly average and in the most part not that pallet able
My main complaint with this was the room apart from being very cramped was located at the top of a very steep flight of stairs which to some one like myself with limited mobility was a bit of a challenge
Also everything else was spread out so involved a fair bit of effort to get round
The rooms were small but comfortable however we found the Staff courteous and helpful although the service at breakfast time was very slow it was worth waiting for

My husband booked a dinner bed and breakfast deal (£195 per night) for my birthday for a castle room with bath, this was confirmed by email. On arrival we were given a room with a shower, in which you had to walk across the shower tray to get to the loo! We rang reception to be told they would ring back, 15 mins after no call back, we rang again and were told that they were "dealing" with it and the porter was on his way up. He told us that he had a twin next door or a single! but that they were fully booked, I explained that this had been booked for a while that I had just finished work and that we had specifically booked a room with bath to relax after a long day we asked to see the manager, 10 mins later the porter came back and now magically they did have a double room with bath!! very strange. So an hour after checking in we finally got settled in our room.

My husband spoke to the manager on our way to dinner who said that a room with bath could not be promised but we explained that it was confirmed on the booking, he later emailed this to the manager direct, my husband asked if we could have a bottle of wine for the inconvenience and he said no but after explaining in detail, eventually grudgingly he agreed. The meal was very nice, breakfast on the other hand was very poor and I have had better in a premier inn. Basically the staff need some customer service training and the whole place could do with a bit of an overhaul as its getting a bit sad and tired now.

Room Tip: don't bother there are far better hotels for the price with better facilities and customer experience

We have stayed two times at lumley and were not disappointed on both occasions. From check-in (surrounded by candles) to check-out it was faultless. Nothing was too much for friendly staff. Food was gorg and wine was super. Breakfast, poached eggs were perfect. Need to go again x

I have just had my works Christmas party at Lumley castle Banquet evening and the evening its self was a total let down.
When we arrived it was authentic and the bar area was nice but very small and crammed.
We then went into the dining room and my heart sank when were were shown to our seats which were wooden benches crammed with people who we didnt really want to be seated with we thought it would be just our company, the difficult part was trying to get into your seat as we were packed tight together and in a dress it was very un lady like!!!
the first course came which was served at the other end of the table and had to be passed by other people who were coughing and breathing all over my broth! hence to say after its long journey and many germs being passed it was cold and tasteless the best bit was the bread which again was touched by everyone else on the table!!
The next course ribs which again was passed along the line being covered in germs!!! the one rib was so tough it was in edible and the other one was just fat!!!!
Finally the main course arrived (along the line again!!) I was so disappointed it was a small chicken leg and a jacket potato and that was it!!!
Dessert was a disgrace it was an individual frozen Christmas pudding which was smothered in white sauce which was tasteless apart from the flour!!!! and the two inch skin where it had been left sitting under a hot plate for that long!
the waiters and waitresses did a good job entertaining us but to be fair they had a very easy job as us the guests did all the hard work passing our food along the line and our dirty plates back at the end of each course!!!!
Afterwards we were asked to go back to the bar area for the disco but on getting there all the tables (all 4 of them) were taking so had to spend the rest of the evening stood on the edge of the dance floor as there was no room anywhere else!
I live close to Lumley Castle and thought it was going to be an amazing place we even looked at it for a wedding venue but Im so pleased we didnt choose to spend our wedding day there!
The prices they charge is a total rip off for the standard of food, we get better standard of food from our local take away!!!
You can tell there is problems as there is a few bad reviews on here and the Management at Lumley have not addressed any of them!!
Will not be returning.

This was fun to stay in a Norman castle. We did not make dinner reservations before we arrived so we weren't able to eat in the restaurant. We ordered room service since the hotel is somewhat out of town and not near restaurants. (We planned our trip to visit Durham and then stop in the castle for the night.) We did visit the bar, which was a library with a very cozy feel. This place is so authentic that the reception area has uneven rock floors.

Room Tip: If you want less authentic and a newer feel, there are courtyard rooms. The picture shown here is a room in then original 1390 castle.
