We went on a Friday night dinner, bed and breakfast deal and had a brilliant time. The reputedly haunted castle certainly looks the part and is grand, if a little eerie. The decor is kept in an according style and has real atmosphere. There is loads of parking in and around the castle and we parked in the nearly empty overflow area, as the main part can get a bit snarled up at times. We were greeted with a room upgrade, to a castle room, which was a nice surprise. The room was fab - comfortable bed, very warm, tea and coffee, small wardrobe, nice view - although to keep the review fair and balanced, it was on the small side, noise travels in the creaky corridors, and the cold water stopped once after a bath (maybe a small water tank). Also, don't expect minibar or ironing board - these aren't in the room. We had dinner in the Black Knight and the food was delicious - the duck hash to start was fab (but quite filling) and the beef signature dish was super tasty (again very hearty). The atmosphere is great in the restaurant, but may be worth asking for one of the raised, curtained booth areas, if you want a bit more romantic seclusion! Service was faultless throughout for us. This place is different and something a bit special. We loved it and would definitely return!

The overnight stay at Lumley Castle started off with a drink in the bar before dinner in the black knight restaurant the food was exceptional with a large range to choose from the atmosphere very pleasing. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Rooms were out of this world. Breakfast exceptional with everything you could wish for. Our sixth stay at Lumley Castle. We will be back.

Room Tip: Courtyard or Castle both good

My wife and I stayed overnight as a Christmas present from our two lovely daughters, The stay included included a 5 course Elizabethan banquet and entertainment along with breakfast.
The hotel was easy to find just 5 minutes drive off the A1M and very handy if your visiting the cricket ground, Being a castle it is set on top a hill and from its vantage point you have a great view over the countryside and river wear. The castle has its own grounds and has a golf course next to it and you are within 15 minutes drive of Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham and 5 minutes from the town of Chester-Le-Street.
We where booked into our room which was a courtyard room by a very nice and welcoming lady on reception in no more than 5 minutes. On entering the room we where very happy with it it was very clean though not too big, The bed was very comfortable and it had a nice flat screen tv along with a very nice bathroom.
We got ready and went to the banquet we had to wait in the bar until the room was ready for us but we where called into the room by name in an orderly fashion into the main hall where we where served our 5 courses and where royally entertained the food was very nice and lots of it and the entertainment though not straight from the west end of London was very entertaining and funny. I must say that we really enjoyed our night and would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to visit the north east and experience a warm north east welcome my thanks to the staff for making this visit so enjoyable.

We had stayed at the Castle previously and decided to look at the options for New Years Eve, the masquerade ball was our choice. We combined the accommodation and arrived new years eve lunchtime, had a drink in the bar (which is like a library, a warm and cosy room) then headed in Durham for lunch. The ball was fantastic, from pre-dinner champagne and canapés to the 4 course meal (of your choice). The entertainment, which was a Michael Buble tribute act and also sang swing songs was amazing, a piper attended and played the bagpipes during the evening and the whole thing went on with a disco till 2am. An amazing way to bring in the new year and highly recommended.

Room Tip: We stayed in the courtyard rooms and not in the main castle - this was a little cheaper.

we (couple) stayed first friday after new year, arrived around 3.30pm and room was ready which had been upgraded to the castle area. room was incredibly hot and we had to turn radiator down. very clean and enough room for us for one night. very clean bathroom and plenty of hot water. free internet which worked fine. freeview television and tea and coffee, hairdryer in room.
meal was very nice in the black knight restaurant, service good and not too badly priced. bar was cosy and prices what you would pay in a town centre. breakfast was help yourself plus choice of meal brought to your table, was around £15 each but was included in our deal. the castle is from the 14th century so that is the appeal and the fact its supposed to be haunted. good place to stay for cricket as the ground is just down the road. and the a1m is a short ride away with durham and newcastle within easy reach. obviously with the age of the place there are uneven walkways which could be a problem for some. plenty of car parking but some is a short walk from reception and very small lift for disabled only.
nice staff and well worth a one or two night stay.

Room Tip: in the castle

very friendly staff, nothing is too much trouble we stayed on a Sunday evening so i don't know if there would be any difference staying on a Fri/Sat night.
Had a problem booking special offer through the web site as different price came up so had to phone to make booking.
Room (44) was clean and tidy only slight problem was shower being separate to toilet and sink room but due to age of building this was not a big issue, although a shelf or table is needed in shower room.
when we went to the bar around 3.30ish we found most of the tables were reserved for afternoon tea which is a little off putting and uninviting as a guest not being able to take a seat in the bar, maybe the hotel could serve afternoon tea in a more suitable room.
Our evening meal was very nice with just the right amount of time between courses.
Overall the stay was nice and the friendly breakfast staff and polite restaurant staff made this an enjoyable visit and would stay again.
