“NEVER AGAIN”

Booked a romance package for my husbands birthday after going to this hotel several times previously. On this occasion the whole experience was terrible from start to finish . I had requested a particular table in the restaurant at booking, and then reiterated my request upon arrival and was told that eveything had been sorted, and then when we arrived for dinner they had changed the reservation The service in the restaurant was appauling and all staff didnt seem to know what they were doing .The food was very expensive but tasteless and at breakfast it was obvious that meals had been pre plated and left under a heater until required as the sausage and bacon were rock hard .The romance package included a bottle of champagne which had been placed in our room early in the day when we were out, but by the time we returned to the room at approx 1545 it was swimming in a bucket of water and the room had not been made up .There were three weddings at the hotel on this day and half the grounds were out of bounds to us quests who were not attending them , yet we had paid high prices to stay there also, it appears that normal quests are not important to them. .Dont waste your hard earned cash on this place its not worth it !

My wife and I stayed at Lumley castle recently. On arrival our room had been upgraded (hey! this doesn't happen to us)
The room was spacious (bed big and cozy) bathroom had everything you could need. Lovely biscuits too.
We ate in the restaurant and found the meal out of this world. Staff were excellent, friendly and very professional.
Price was really good value (midweek retreat)
I would recommend Lumley Castle for an overnight stay and a meal to anyone.. loved it

Room Tip: The special offers are excellent value. Midweek retreat and murder mystery (really entertaining) are...

Booked afternoon tea for my friends birthday and we were really looking forward to it but have got to say were a little dissappointed. The staff were very polite and helpful and the setting is really nice but for the price of the afternoon tea £13.95 per head the food was nothing to shout home about. The sandwiches were served without crusts cut off and the beef still had gristle on it. The Scones were delicious though, home made and served warm with lots of butter, jam and clotted cream. Lots of choice of cakes in fact too many, would have prefered more savoury items! The bar was a little chilly too, although the heating was on, I suppose its really difficult to heat a large place like this.

Great experience, the castle rooms are fantastic. We love the hidden bathrooms and quirkiness. The history of the place and the beauty is sonmthing to behold. Try a midnight stroll on you own, eery to say the least.

Room Tip: Castle rooms all great for us.

We stayed in the wood panelled castle feature room for one night in April for a birthday treat. Fantastic!! Arrival was brilliant, absolutely stunning architecture and countryside. Fantastic atmosphere on arrival in reception and a porter to take our luggage, show us the main areas and to our room. Well, the room, again fantastic! Very atmospheric, clean and quiet. Quirky with the wood panelling, 4-poster bed and old fire place (shame it cannot be lit!). The deep free standing bath is pretty much in the room too! We had champagne and choccies and I had expected the fizzy to be Cava or Prosecco, but it was proper champagne. The view from the windows was green woodland too and very peaceful, even with a wedding going on.

Dinner was lovely, great service from start to finish, though I was not 100% impressed with the food. Whilst not awful, not the best either - bit of a shame really.

Breakfast was great, busy, but then there was a wedding on the night before.

The castle grounds are beautiful. Had a good wander round the castle indoors too. Could be interesting to have a guided tour maybe??!

All in all, a fantastic treat and would come again!

Room Tip: If you can afford it, go for a Castle Feature Room!

We stayed there one night over the weekend of 26th and 27 April.

The castle is very inviting. It is surrounded by an attractive golf course and, you would imagine, is situated overlooking the town. It also overlooks Durham cricket ground, which is rather nice, and it is only a few minutes from the A1.

Parking is ok - we could not get close to the main courtyard parking, as it was very busy on a Saturday, but there is adequate other parking.

There was not much of a welcome at reception on checking in; we were left with the feeling that we were on a conveyor belt of people to check in.

We stayed in one of the courtyard rooms. Modest in size but quite adequate and the bathroom was particularly nice with a decent shower and bath mix.

Our room was not very sound proofed and you can hear other guests going to toilet; the flushing of water is quite loud at night. We heard our guests come and go at all hours. The beds are two singles joined together, so you are both inclined to end up in the middle.

Our package included a complimentary bottle of house wine. It did not appear so I requested it when we retuned late at night. Reception kept me holding on the line while they investigated whether I did warrant a bottle! It arrived quite promptly after but opened and the waiter endeavoured to charge us for it on room service.

Breakfast is held in the most glorious castle room. There was an excess of staff around to look after us but it got very busy from 9am onwards. Our hot chocolate was cold and then only lukewarm when they had kindly taken it away to
sort the problem out.

The starter at breakfast is through self service and was most enjoyable. Some nice juices and fruits to choose from, as well as other choices.

The main breakfast menu promised so much but failed to deliver. My wife's scrambled egg was poor and my kipper was cold and not very well cooked.

Such a shame - the castle is wonderful but a culmination of small issues left us feeling underwhelmed and we are most unlikely to return, as there are much better and cheaper options locally.

We got married here and had a wonderful time, a small ceremony with 24 guests and a reception in the Northumbria room. The day was very special and the wedding coordinator on the day helpful in sorting out the running of the day and directing the guests. The ceremony was lovely the surroundings perfect and resulted in some beautiful photographs.

The meal was fantastic with huge portions and the canapés and snacks following the ceremony were really tasty, and well worth the money, served on the lawn which was perfect. I would recommend a wedding here.

The only slight negative was an issue with a coordinator prior to the day, and the attitude of the person who rang me to resolve a few niggles after the event, who tried to tell me things didn't happen, as was a tad patronising. I guess a few hitches are expected and did not detract from the day.

The suite we stayed in on our wedding night was fantastic with a four poster bed and lots of little quirky features which really made it special. A day to remember

Room Tip: Check castle feature rooms have a bath (one room was a tad odd having to walk through a shower to ge...
