This place is really lovely. For the discerning traveller who wants somewhere quirky yet traditional, classy yet ostentatious in all the right places, this hotel makes for a nifty hide away. My partner and I decided to take up one of their Romantic Break offers with dinner and breakfast for two days and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We were lucky enough to be given a small but perfectly formed majestic space with a corner bath and bottle of champagne, and we enjoyed every minute of it. The dinners were very nice and beautifully presented, and the breakfasts, although somewhat medieval in terms of vastness, were cooked to order and varied in choice. The hotel staff were unfailingly polite and cheerful and couldn't do enough to help you; there were two huge weddings on during the Saturday of our stay yet they ensured that the ordinary guests were well looked after and not neglected in any way. Would highly recommend the place to couples seeking a spot of romance and extravagance and we'd definitely go back.

We booked this hotel for my husbands 40th birthday treat. We booked the "Romantic Weekend" package. We werent dissapointed. In our room was a bouquet of flowers, box of chocolates and champagne on ice. The hotel is totally beautiful, the staff are friendly and helpfull and the restaraunt and food was stunning. I would highly recomend this hotel.

We stayed at Lumley Castle as part of our honeymoon 18 years ago and decided to revisit following my sister’s wedding last week. Their website offered an excellent advance purchase rate of £114 for a state room and I requested ‘the room with the toilet in the wardrobe’. Unfortunately I had not realised that there is more than one and we had a different room; however we both agreed that we preferred the second one. We arrived separately in different cars and were both shown to our room. It was superb with plush furnishings and great efforts made to blend in the required internal scaffolding required to hold this wonderful old building together. The negatives, which are minor, but which would make this hotel so perfect are: inferior toiletries (dispensers stuck on the wall), no slippers to go with the plush bathrobes, and no evening turn down/refresh service.
Afternoon tea in the lounge was superb, but pre- dinner drinks were slightly blighted by staff discussing personal matters including cars and whether or not one of them was pregnant. We found that this intrusion into the ambience of the castle also occurred with the breakfast staff. Having said that, all staff were attentive, and very hard working.
Dinner was excellent as was breakfast.
One of my previous postings states my disappointment in returning to a hotel many years on; in this case, my Husband and I both agree that the stay was better, the food superior and the whole experience something which we shall definitely return to in future years.

For most of us there aren't many chance to stay in a 13th century castle and I have to say that this place was absolutely amazing. The staff were wonderful and the whole ambience of the place takes you right back in time.

Thank you so much for starting our holiday off so amazingly, we'll definitely be back!

Certainly not an ordinary hotel as their promotional literature boasts! We had a very enjoyable but unusual stay in this quirky hotel. Lumley Castle is just as it states a castle but it has been dressed to appear as a mix of everything you would expect to find in an Americam theme park. Think Disney's Haunted House crossed with Warwick castle . Our room was in the stable block and although small was expensively decorated and appointed. However the interior designers (if I can call them that) had packed every surface with vases, pictures and objects in fact anything which resembled an antique. On the bed was a teddy bear inviting me to purchase it and take it home! When we made a cup of tea, having moved several objects in order to plug in the kettle it set the smoke alarm off !

We ate in the restaurant which you get to having ordered your food in the library by means of a dimly lit corridor with busts of what I think were roman emperors/nobles. The menu is not extensive but our food was delicious and beatifully presented. The following morning we could not fault the breakfast.

Lumley Castle is set in beautiful grounds and we had a wonderful if wacky stay.

On arrival we were told our room wasn't ready but we could check in. When we returned at 3pm for our room key, we weren't shown to our room, we had no help or offer of help for our baggage and walking down the dark corridors and climbing poorly lit stairs proved to be quite daunting. When asked the location of the bar the receptionist pointed in the general direction. The same attitude pervailed when we asked for directions to the dining room. The room was small, very dark and hot with very little ventilation. The wardrobe space was a small area, under the eaves, behind a curtain. It contained a trouser press and four clothes hangers. The bathroom was reasonable but hadn't been finished to any great standard and we had to call the porter to get him to turn the shower on. Room service was used and our order arrived minus a couple of items. We don't consider the castle to be 5 star accommodation or worth the room price. We will never go back.

This was our first visit since our daughter's wedding there in April 2004 and we took advantage of the romance package which included Dinner ,Breakfast with Champagne and chocolates in the room. The room was No 4 in the Courtyard which was quite small compared to the feature rooms in the castle we all had for the wedding. However there was a big comfortable bed and all the usual facilities, bathroom rather on the tiny side ,but unlike other reviewers we found hot water plentiful. Were plesed to be on the ground floor and also glad that the occupants of the upstairs room were not noisy, you could hear their every move. However no problems with noise outside in the courtyard even though there was a large wedding going on.There is car parking in the courtyard but not easy to get a space especially if there is a function.Staff were friendly and we enjoyed our dinner and breakfast in the Black Knight Restaurant but thought the dinner menu a little lacking in choice.Luckily we checked our bill before leaving the restaurant after dinner as we found a very expensive bottle of wine added that did not belong to us.
I like the dark atmosphere in the castle and the staff costumes, find the experience relaxing, and feel it is definitely more for leisure than business people. Found no teddy on the bed either, perhaps this has been stopped due to bad feedback. I would be happy to return again so long as standards don't decline.
