“our romantic getaway”

We were married at Lumley Castle in 2009 and went back for our 1st wedding anniversary - we absolutely love the place! Lumley is beautiful and quirky offering very good service from the staff who are extremely helpful and beautifully styled rooms which are comfortable and different from the ordinary. Dinner in the Black Knights restaurant is well worth the money, as is breakfast. The Library is a cosy retreat for either coffee, tea and biscuits or drinks before/after dinner. I would recommend Lumley to anyone whether for a weekend away or as a wedding venue.

Lumley Castle is truly amazing and a beautiful setting for a romantic weekend.

I was specifically looking for a hotel in an authentic English castle and importantly one which has retained its old charm throughout, rather than just a facade with a modern /refurbished interior. Lumley Castle is one of the few hotels across England that fits this bill, and it does so perfectly.

Beautiful four poster beds, high ceilings, large paintings and large drapes - Lumley takes you back to life in the 13th Century in a second, and you quickly forget all of your modern day worries.

The Castle's restaurant and bar is also excellent.

This hotel was just magnificent! Beforehand, i had read the reviews, been on the website, looked at the pictures, but still nothing had prepared me for how wonderful it really was.

I had suprised my other half with a one night stay to this hotel and it was better than anything he or i had expected. We stayed on a Monday night as the banquets are not really our kind of thing and i was hoping to avoid any noise from a wedding function. As it happens there was a wedding that night but we didn't hear a thing!

Upon arrival the castle just looked wonderful. We checked in and a porter carted our bags to our room for us. I had chosen a Castle Feature Room and i assure you that if you do the same you will not be disappointed. I had read online that some rooms have the bathroom through the wardrobe. I was so excited when we were showed into our room to find no sign of a bathroom. I could see my other half looking round wondering where it was. His face when i opened the wardrobe door...it was just brilliant. The room itself was just pure luxury. The four poster bed was high, beautifully made and very comfortable. I had the best nights sleep! The decor was spledid and the bathroom was also lovely.

In the evening we dined in the Black Knight restaurant. I have to say the food was very nice indeed but slightly overpriced (although i didn't really care). But we had a lovely evening which ended with a stroll round the courtyard and a drink in the library bar. In the morning our breakfast was in the Black Knight Restaurant again and it was lovely.

The castle itself was full or treasures and it felt like we had stepped back in time. Our stay was just faultless and we would definately stay there again!

Stayed at Lumley Castle for one night as attending a friends wedding on the site - Generally very impressed throughout.

Stayed in a courtyard room which was quite small, as was the bed. Room decorated in keeping with the hotel style which is "old" but compared to similar places I've stayed it certainly wasn't tired. Unique certainly. Noise in lower floor rooms can be a problem if other guests heavy footed but this isn't a major issue so long as you are not wanting to sleep before them! Very well maintained for it's enormous age and size - some really great features throughout.

Grounds beautifully kept and great for stretching your legs. Staff very friendly and very efficient throughout - Can only comment on those in the Bar and those that served during wedding meal and proceedings but all round they were excellent.

Food of a very high quality and that was catering 3-courses for approximately 80 guests at the wedding so expect the restaurant to very very good.

Value for money when purchased at the "lower rate" we managed to bag but a touch on the expensive side if not. However, compared to similar establishments in the Durham area I'd say it was competitively priced.

Cannot comment on Chester-Le-Street but Durham only 10 mins drive away and well worth a visit.

Would reccomend for weekend break or definately as a wedding venue (and very popular from what we saw, so consider this if you don't want to be with lots of wedding guests).

We married last year (we're in our late sixties) and went immediately from our Richmond church wedding to the castle for the first part of our honeymoon. Our wedding night and the following night were spent in this altogether wonderfully genuine historic and atmospheric medieval castle. My wife is/was enthralled with it as a first time experience although i have stayed a few times previously. We promised ourselves that we would recreate our first visit together for our anniversary treat and celebration.
TRAGEDY!!! When we attempted to make the booking 3/4 weeks ago we were told that the hotel was fully booked for our requested anniversary dates (30th.July to 1st. August) Tragic because we had set our hearts on it. However, we did manage to get a courtyard room for the Sunday, 1st. August so all was not lost. And now to the hotel itself!! I have never being given a less than immaculate room and ALL public rooms are to the same VERY high, if antique, standard indeed. The Black NIght restaurant alone is very well worth a visit although the food, while being of the first quality, preparation and presentation is perhaps a little too classy for my pie and chips or mixed grill mentality But this is NOT an implied critiscm. How could it be when the traditional full english breakfast is so exactly to my taste. As is the afternoon tea. As a "makum"(local) myself i find the staff to be just like myself in speech and mannerisms but showing a very strong spirit of concern to ensure that out of towners find them to be very approachable and helpful and to show off (take pride in?) the castle. I believe that the staff who I have had interaction with view their position as being somewhat more than JUST another job!!

This was a really wonderful treat to ourselves! Staying in a castle? Never thought we would see this day but it was truly a great experience. The room was smallbut very well designed; the staff were all very helpful but the food........EXCELLENT. We ate like the lords and ladies of yesteryear and today and would thoroughly recommend this hotel. Thank you all for our stay.

The beautiful grounds and delightful flower covered courtyard greeted us. Reception staff were friendly enough, however when we arrived in our room, the bin had not been emptied from the last occupier, the shower room sink was leaking and there were cobwebs hanging from above the door.

We booked an executive room, and whilst it was probably executive 5-10 years ago, I’m not sure it could be classed as such now. It looked tired, with the wall paper scuffed and peeling. The mattress on the bed was well past its sell by date and the shower room looked very tired and dated.

All the above said, dinner was very good, the restaurant lovely and the staff very attentive. However, we were surprised, when the literature stated NO JEANS in the restaurant, most diners were wearing them.

I would recommend this hotel for dinner, not convinced by the rooms.
