“Dreadful Wedding”
Reviewed 9 March 2008

I recently was a guest at a wedding here, and although living in Durham thought we would make a weekend of it and stay over the night as well to save trying to get home and have breakfast with my other family members the next morning.

I really cannot recommend this hotel at all, for anything. It looks very nice as you go up the drive, but that's where the good experience ended. The wediing was organised chaos, there didn't seem any responsible managers looking after the event. It ws like one of those TV documentries where they see if school kids can run the place for a day!!!!

The drink was expensive, the food at the reception was awful (cold and awful food is even worse).

Talking to the bride the hotel appear to be totally inflexible about who you can and can't use as a DJ and other items she wanted for HER wedding day. The function rooms we used seemed very tired, and needed painting and carpets replacing.

Next morning the hotel was that full, breakfasts were spread accross 3 rooms, so no chance of sitting with my family!!! The brekfast was cold (must be a speciality of the hotel) and didn't seem to be of quality stuff as it was very greasy.

I can't knock the rooms they are nice, but expensive to stay. Could be cleaner though. It's also a noisey hotel, with lots going on.

  • Liked — Nice enough room
  • Disliked — Food, Noisey, expensive.

I stayed for one night for my brorthers birthday, me and my friend had 2 giant double beds, the rooms was really really nice. The bathroom was very clean and our pattio doors opened up on to the golf course, the view was lovley. The wedding was fab, the food was fab, the hotel was fab, they attended to every detail. No faults at all.

Someone one from work had booked me into this hotel, as it was a last minute work thing and nowhere else was available.

The place was heaving with drunken louts, the hotel appeared to have Christmas parties squeezed into every spare corner of the hotel. It was noisy and had an atmosphere of a spit and sawdust pub where fighting could break out any second. There were no quiet areas for residents.

If work book me into this hotel again I would rather sleep in the car. It is overpriced for what it is. There are no leisure facilities at all. The food looked as dire as it did last time.

Very pleasantly surprised after having read some of the reviews for this hotel. Room was extremely comfortable, staff were pleasant and friendly. Breakfast was prompt and very good. I'll be coming back here as soon as I have the opportunity.

Stayed here overnight after attending a family wedding. We had two standard double rooms, which were ok, £120 each which is a discounted rate if you are at a wedding. Also we had a premier room at £150 - again a discounted rate. The premier room was nice - large, big jacuzzi bath.

The wedding was dreadful - 3.30 p.m., and then we were outside for photos and champagne & canapes, it was very disorganised - champagne awful - if you left your glass you couldn't get another - there were no clean glasses. Canapes were pretty dire - and very hard to even get! The room was being set up for evening buffet and disco - and it was available at 6.30. Long hang around - although you could go to the bar and lounges. Evening buffet was pretty sparse, admittedly they can only serve what the party have ordered. However - looking at their wedding brochure - its not great in terms of buffet items. We had travelled from Scotland - so we were hungry so opted for the Carvery. DON'T under any circumstances waste your money - its absolutely horrible. Chips were black and I mean black! Sirloin steak was virtually inedible. Choice was average, no kids meals - half portions were available, but a 17 month old doesn't really want steak and chips! My mother complained about the quality of meal - but it fell on deaf ears. Breakfast on the Saturday morning was buffet style - ok - but the eggs were rubber, and we were one of the first guests in, sausages weren't cooked properly. Greasy for sure - and I don't know what kind of oil/fat they use but it does have a horrible taste! I'd eaten salad at the evening buffet, as had my husband - I didn't eat in the Carvery at all - and I was ill the following lunchtime. My husband was also ill - so make your own judgement. We hadn't been drinking at the wedding - so it wasn't due to that. The main restaurant menu was boring - uninspiring, and for a hotel which tries to make itself a big venue - they need to improve the food. The hotel has lots of highchairs for little ones, and the trays are obviously sterilised and then have a cling wrap put over them - so that was good. I'd say this hotel is ok - but needs to try much harder. The wedding was disorganised, the running wasn't smooth - and it should have been better, given the impression they create in their brochures and website.
The following day there were 4 weddings at the hotel - so its generally busy at weekends - and of course there is the golf course, which looked ok from what I could see. The hotel is in a good location for Durham City - just along from the entrance is the 'Park & Ride' which is ideal to get into the City - as it saves any worry about finding car parking when you get into Durham itself. So for that reason - the hotel is well located. It is also easy to find from the A1.

All in all, if you are looking for a wedding venue - its ok - but I'd be very careful that it is slick and organised. Else - it could be very run of the mill. If you are looking for a hotel close to Durham which is ok - then it fits the bill although it is a bit like a maze - great with the 'Park & Ride'. I'd advise avoiding the food - its awful.

Recently stayed in the hotel on business. Unfortunately the weather was poor when I stayed otherwise I would have taken advantage of the extensive grounds which are very attractive and there is a golf course and driving range.

The room I stayed in was large with a four poster bed and jacuzzi bath. It was decorated very traditionally so may not be to everyone's taste - as was the rest of the hotel.

Breakfast was fine with plenty of choice and included in the price of the stay.

Staff were friendly.

Overall a pleasant stay.

We stayed for a couple of days to attend a wedding here. Pleasant enough location, but not exactly spectacular.

Room (we stayed in a Premier room) was reasonable, but not worth the considerable money. Niggles include poor lighting (this seems standard in UK hotels), no full length mirror, shower left water all over the bathroom floor no matter how careful you were with the shower curtain.

Restaurant is to be avoided. We dined in the A la Carte, and were NOT impressed. Food was totally uninspiring with vegatables overcooked, and dishes sometimes not as described (A starter of grilled portobello mushroom with stilton came with a lump of what looked like camembert in place of stilton, and something green and totally inedible). There is also a Carvery, which we walked through. It seems to be part of the main traffic route from some of the function rooms to the hotel proper.

Wine list is curious. Uninspiring choices, all fairly low budget stuff (think <£5 in Tesco and marked up to £20), but the descriptions are what intrigued. Majored on the colour of the red wines, with little information on the taste. Usual descriptive terms (eg easy drinking, smooth, full bodied, robust, etc) seemed to be missing entirely.

Wedding meal was totally average (and overcooked), and the organisation didn't seem that slick. Breakfast was serve yourself , with rubber fried eggs.

Overall the experience was that of a typical run-of-the-mill, slightly down-market 3 star hotel. Not wonderful, but not bad enough to make a big fuss over. Pity the prices didnt reflect that.
