“Excellent Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2014 via mobile

I stay with my job in the Durham area quite frequently and had never stayed at the Ramside. On the recommendation of one of my colleagues booked in to here and was not disappointed.

The check in was very fast and excellent helpful friendly staff who explained all the options to eat in the restaurant. I had a deluxe room on the second floor and the room was excellent with a huge 6ft bed sofa and 40 inch TV and the bathroom was off a very high standard huge bath power shower and sensor lighting and plenty off towels and bath robes.

I choose to eat in the grill restaurant with colleagues and the food was excellent as was the service. I had steak all perfectly cooked my colleagues had the posh fish & chips and the desserts were all good to.

I had breakfast brought to my room for a extra £2.50 again excellent huge choice from the list you leave outside your room and brought spot on time of asking . The wifi at the hotel also excellent and included in the cost.

For sure this will be where I will stay in future when I am on business.

I arrived at the hotel, plenty of parking and very friendly staff. The driving range was out of use as a new spa is being built (not sure on completion date).

The room was very clean and comfortable. The restaurant was very busy and service a little slow however the food was very good standard but on the expensive side (Fish and Chips nearly £20, Steaks £25). Breakfast was very nice and lots of choice

Room Tip: Ask for a room looking out towards the garden

I don't play golf, but this proved an excellent hotel. It has a very country feel, lovely extensive gardens with the golf course beyond. Ideal for exploring Durham without staying in the city, as 5 mins walk from the hotel is the park and ride service. Very welcoming reception staff - in fact all the staff I had dealings with were friendly and helpful. I sampled both varieties of rooms, and I have to say I preferred the slightly smaller upstairs rooms to the downstairs french-window variety. The upstairs rooms have very nice double sash windows which can be left open at night in hot weather - you can't do this with the glass doors. I also found the lighting better - the larger rooms have dimmer lighting, and in fact the window doors don't let in that much light anyway, partly due to the very large hanging baskets right outside. Another issue with the downstairs rooms could be lack of privacy and noise from the outside bar seating, and from the fact that some of them are on the main access corridor to the bars and restaurants, though on this stay it didn't prove a nuisance. Both rooms had very good bathroom facilities. The food was excellent in both restaurants; the bistro carvery is particularly good value for money. Steaks and steak burgers in the Rib restaurant were superb, service was friendly and efficient, though I suggest trying for a table in the first room, which has more atmosphere due to the decor, but less smaller tables. Lots of nice tucked away seating areas around the bar.The new spa and swimming pool currently under construction will be a huge asset.

Room Tip: Avoid downstairs rooms off main corridor leading to bar and restaurants

The location of Ramside Hall makes it perfect for visiting this part of the country. Close enough to the A1 to make travelling easy, but without being aware of any traffic noise from the road.
Durham, which is a lovely city, is quick and easy to get to. There is a park-and-ride really close by for daytime trips to Durham. This ends at 7pm, so we drove in, in the evening.

As we often spend just one night in a hotel when visiting relatives, we have mostly stayed in Premier Inns recently. However as this was a four-night stay, we were looking for a traditional hotel with more facilities for relaxing and spending time during the day. Ramside Hall fitted the bill perfectly.

We had booked a deluxe double room, which was lovely. At the back of the hotel, it overlooked the garden and golf course: Spacious, nice and clean, with a 6ft bed, two-seater sofa with coffee-table, a reading-chair with standard lamp, and desk & chair. The tv was also set up to receive Sky Sports, which was a bonus as we are cricket fans! There were double glass doors to a lobby where the wardrobe and tea & coffee making tray were sited, and the bathroom off. The bathroom was of a very high standard - beautiful. Just a pity about the sensor-lights, which turned off after too short a time, so we had to wave to turn them back on! Disconcerting the first time it happened, annoying after that.

We were very impressed by the array of food at breakfast. Everything from full English to choose from. The prepared fresh fruits were lovely as they were kept separate to pick what you liked. We sampled bacon, scrambled eggs, cooked tomatoes, fruits, yoghurt, smoked salmon, cereals, Danish pastries, croissants, toast with honeycomb... All good!

We ate in the Carvery on one night. Turkey breast was my choice and steak pie my husband's. Both were very good. It was nice to see that the choices included salmon, a pasta dish and sweet & sour pork as well as the roast meats. Plenty of choice of veg, kept hot under domes, which were fine.

All the staff who we came into contact with were lovely; always a cheery good morning/afternoon/evening. A hello from the reception staff whenever you passed by if they were not speaking to another guest. The only hiccup was in the Carvery. It was very busy at the time and staff seemed thin on the ground. We could easily have eaten without paying (we went over to the coffee bar after we had eaten to settle up).

On 2 of the nights, there were functions taking place in the Marquee in the grounds. Music was playing until after our bedtime at 11ish, but as our room was at the far side of the hotel this did not bother us. Neither were we disturbed at all by the building of the new Spa, despite our room being near to this.

Our stay was Monday to Thursday and we would definitely stay again if coming to the North-east. I gathered that there was a wedding taking place on the Friday, and more weddings on the Saturday. This is something I would check on if we were thinking of a weekend stay.

Stayed at this hotel on the 15th, check in experience was quick however the room we were allocated was right at reception which did cause a few problems with guests walking up and down the corridor at all times of the night. The windows in the room would not open due to the age so meant the room was extremely warm. When I went to open the window I also noticed we were right next to the smoking area so again a bit of noise late in the evening.
We ate in the grill restaurant and were sat right next to the host stand and explained we would prefer another table we were not moved. This meant that we were knocked by other guests walking past and as interesting as it was, did I really want to know the server was having issues with another table?? Ordered the steak and asked for it medium however after an hour waiting it arrived over cooked but as it was getting on for 9pm we ate it. £59 to be exact so I would have expected it to be cooked the way we liked.
I wouldn't say it was value for money as the stay cost nearly £200 for one night including the accommodation and food, maybe if we hadn't had the few niggles as mentioned above it would have been a different story.

Came here for a friends wedding, food was great, service was great. Tables quickly cleared in fact staff were so good you didn't really notice they were there. Place was immaculate, clean and very well presented. Only gripe was that the house wine was far too sweet too my liking.

We stayed for two nights at the Ramside Hotel and cannot praise it too highly. The staff were friendly and efficient, nothing too much trouble. The evening meals were great - I have never had a better steak and my wife loved her halibut and American fries with mushy peas.
The room was large and looked out onto the gardens and the 18th hole of the golf course. Perfect.
Would recommend this hotel highly.

Room Tip: A new extension is being built so a room overlooking the gardens would be preferable.
