“Great hotel, great location, freindly staff”
Reviewed 24 October 2011

Stayed at the Durham County for one night on business. I’ve stayed on two previous occasions and this visit was as good as on previous occasions.
I arrived early evening after travel hassles (UK railways…). Check in was delayed whilst a lady sent 10 minutes deciding whether to accept the complimentary copy of The Times newspaper (“it’s just not the same as it used to be”). The hotel staff were fantastic, offering me a glass of wine whilst the situation resolved! I am joking, they were totally professional. I was given an upgraded room. This was in fact 2 rooms with a bathroom. The king-sized bed was really comfortable, with ample pillows (I paid £99 for the room, take heed other hotels in the UK). I didn’t eat in the hotel, but went to the bar for a “cheeky beer” when I returned. Again, the staff were really friendly, engaging me in conversation, asking how my day had been. I had a really good night sleep.
Breakfast was buffet style. Quality and quantity were excellent. Despite a coach party checking out at the same time I did, check out was efficient.
The location of the hotel is really fantastic for the city of Durham, it’s 5 mins walk form the castle/ cathedral. Some great pubs around (Swan with two Cygnets opposite). The hotel is really comfortable, professionally run and they pay attention to the details that make such a difference when travelling. Definitely recommend.

I just spent a fabulous weekend at the Royal County. From check-in (with canapes and a glass of wine, whilst waiting) to checking out, the experience was relaxing, friendly and very professional. Staff were very accommodating, always had a smile and a few words for you and were very, very helpful.

The hotel itself was lovely. Very spacious and well-furnished rooms, a fantastic bed with comfy pillows (a rarity) and lots of public space that also managed to include areas of comparative privacy as well. Whilst I didn't have afternoon tea there, it did look absolutely lovely and very generous. Friends who used the pool and steam room very much appreciated these and found them clean .

The food in the restaurant was very tasty and the portions just right. The waiting staff were also delightful and very friendly - they couldn't do enough for you. Pretty much like all the staff in the hotel! Only tiny complaint was that the fried eggs were all overcooked for breakfast.

Can highly recommend this hotel and will be staying there for a lot longer next year.

Good hotel easy to find with free parking. The rooms were lovely with a huge bed but the bathrooms were past it. The staff were all lovely and the pool etc were great.

We had booked two rooms with a river view, however there was a mix up and we did not have river views, after a long journey we were very disappointed. A member of staff admitted the mistake and searched for rooms with a view of the castle whilst we enjoyed a glass of wine on the house. Our cases were collected from the car and taken to two lovely spacious suites and we were offered complimentary breakfasts for the duration of our five night stay. The hotel is very close to the centre so we ate out the first night. The room we had although very nice was noisy at night due to a swinging door in the corridor that banged shut throughout the night and other guests opposite could be heard laughing at midnight going to their room.
We had a lovely buffet breakfast and staff were very friendly and efficient. we demanded a change of room and packed our cases prior to a day out. Upon our return our cases had been moved to a spacious room overlooking the river, and had many peaceful nights.
We used room service a couple of nights and felt the service was good but a disapointment on the quality of food...A lamb curry had sliced meatballs instead of chunks of lamb.
We made use of the ice machines, and leisure facilities including the swimming pool and steam room. The car park at times was full; however we double parked and left the keys with reception without any problems. Overall our stay was enjoyable, the staff very friendly and breakfasts were a delight. The meals in the restuarant looked overpriced with many dishes having a supplement. Service charges were added to room service and breakfast prices were also high. The hotel went out of their way to ensure we had a pleasant stay even after having problems connecting to the internet we were allowed the use of a computer in reception.

Room Tip: Ask for a river view and a room away from any swinging fire doors.

The hotel is in a great location about 5 mins from the railway station by cab and next to the Elvet Bridge which means that the city centre is about a 1 minute walk away.

The welcome is warm and a glass of wine offered if you have to wait at all which was a nice touch. Checkin was quick, efficient and friendly.

The decor is historic coaching inn and my room was a good size with a lovely view of the castle. It was clear and comfy, however, in places was looking a bit tired (rather than historic).

The one are that the hotel was slightly let down was in that on two days a week the hotel receives a coach tour over night and therefore breakfast is very busy that morning. The restaurant was over-run and food not kept topped up. I can believe that I was unlucky the morning I was there as they seemed to have staff shortages also which compounded the issue. Staff were trying to accomodate people to their best ability and were very friendly despite the challenging situation.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the castle, it's next to a main road, however, the view is great.
