“Love this charming hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 April 2012

I have stayed at this hotel many times over the last year.

All staff are friendly, cheerful and welcoming. Really felt comforting to be arriving on Sunday night for work and the reception staff to remember my name.

The Marriott system will always log your preferences or staff will remember and found I got the same room which I preferred each time. Just brilliant and made a huge difference.

The hotel has refurbished rooms all with typical Marriott drawing room furniture which makes them feel very comfortable and warm.

Two complaints would be the new rooms in the wing above the gym, do not have air conditionining and can be very hot in the summer. There are fans but these weren't that great in cooling the room.

The gym is small - too small to work out comfortably. And the changing rooms are a bit smelly. Stopped working out there and just went for a run along the river bank which is great.

Food is typical over priced Marriott food and not that great.

I preferred to visit many of the bars, restuarants which are a few minutes away. A must is Zen for Thai. Pizza Express for a great pizzas. Or there's Zizzis or a tapas place as well across the bridge.

Room Tip: Not all rooms have air conditioning

We stayed over the weekend - Good Friday to Easter Sunday with friends, we have been on two previous occasions and love Durham. Unfortunately we were given a below par room on the first night, I didn't get much sleep as there was a noisy fan outside our room and the room really wasn't fit for letting. We complained on Saturday morning and we were moved with no fuss to a suite! at no extra charge. The room was brilliant, very light, huge bed, separate sitting room and fantastic bathroom. I had a fantastic nights sleep. We ate in the restaurant on Saturday night and the food was marvellous. I would like to thank Maria, who was the duty manager on Saturday, for the way she dealt with our complaint. She was professional, friendly and solved the problem with no fuss. Thanks Maria you saved our weekend.

Stayed here for my wedding anniversary on 30th of March 2012, i really can't fault this hotel the staff were friendly and helpful from start to finish. We had the inclusive package which included a evening meal and breakfast again this was excellent, all in all a really good stay and enjoyed a masseage in the Spa too which was very relaxing.

Very friendly staff. Nice warm welcome when we arrived, offered a glass of wine whilst waiting to check in. Room nicely appointed with a small lounge area with a comfortable sofa!
Decided to dine in the restaurant as the weather was appalling and enjoyed a very good meal with a bottle of wine. Food reasonably priced, as was the wine. Service good. Decent enough breakfast.
Only complaint was having to pay to park in the hotel car park! Don't even have to do that at the flagship Marriot Dalmahoy!

Business trip on a room only rate booking in April 2012.
Arrived around 5pm and easily found a parking space although I can understand why others have complained. I suspect it would be quite a trek to find another parking facility if the hotel car park was full. No objection to being charged £5 for the night to park - it seems to be the norm for city centre hotels.

Check in was quick and easy and the staff were professional and courteous.

Room on the third floor offered all the facilities you would expect in a hotel of this standard and the bed was very comfortable with plenty of pillows (5 on a queen size bed). Skimping on pillows is a pet hate of mine.

I ate in the County Restaurant choosing mussels for starter and beer battered cod for the main. With a couple of drinks the bill came to around £24 which I thought was very reasonable. Standard of the food was excellent - the mussels in particular.

I never bother with breakfast so cannot comment on that but choice for room service breakfast appeared to be comprehensive.

Check out was painless and I was soon back on the road. All in all, a hassle free stay in comfortable surroundings.

I visited this hotel for a business meeting and lunch.

The food was average to good quality and not too badly priced. Quality was reasonable but portions were a bit on the meagre side. The restaurant was deserted although that may due to their main trade being conducted in the evening.

Interior decoration was clean and typical of an old heritage building. There were plenty of staff at hand.

Whilst I would probably choose not to use the restaurant for a family get together, it does make a convenient venue for conducting business meetings. The host of the meeting was glowing about the standard of room accommodation.

Parking in the Marriott was always a challenge but on my many past stays it was always an option to leave keys with reception and they would shuffle the cars about to accommodate. They were able to do this as the car park was only for hotel guests. According to the Duty Manager they have 150 rooms and only 85 Parking Spaces.
THE GREED FACTOR - Marriott are now charging for parking even if you are staying at the hotel. But this is not the real issue here - despite not having enough spaces in the first place they have employed a company called Parking Eye and anyone can park in the hotel then go off to shop or explore Durham.
This resulted in me turning up at the hotel and being told I could not park there. The Duty Manager had no interest in making any suggestions as to where I could park. I realised after touring all of the car parks in Durham that this was because all of the car parks throughout the city were full. Being local to the area I am aware that this is often the case in Durham City.
In the end I had no choice but to cancel my booking and re-book at a hotel which could accommodate both me and my car. I will never stay in this hotel again unless they see sense and abandon the new policy which only came into effect on 23.3.12.
If you can walk or catch a bus to the hotel then go ahead - its a nice hotel. However, if you want to take you car or are considering a function where your guests may have cars then you shoud definately avoid it at all costs.
