Booked the hotel since it was renovated. The biggest laugh was the renovation. The room only the beds were changed. The doors, windows and tables all had aged wood which needed a good polish or coat of paint. The bathroom must have been last renovated in the 80's. The have some cheek to fool people and say its renovated. At least being a marriott it was clean and neat but no way were the rooms renovated. maybe they do some sort of visualization.

This is the second time I have been staying at this hotel, this time in room 259 with view onto the river.
Checkin was efficient and friendly, was upgraded to a larger room as Silver member. Bed was Super King size and very comfy, room and bathroom was spacious and clean. Breakfast was included in rate and was also very good with everything you could wish for. On the downside the car park get quite full and then you need to leave your car keys with the concierge so that they can park it for you. Have not used the gym or swimming pool so cannot comment on it. Hotel locations is very good as very central to all sights and shops in Durham. If you go to Durham Business School there is a 30 minute walk.
Will definitely stay again.

Where to start about this Marriot 4 star hotel... Should it be with the loss of booking details after a very long and tenuous process of booking rooms, or maybe the difference in room rates charge on check in for the same group booking on the same standard room, or the over charging on check out or maybe the strong smell of chlorine in a number of the bedrooms, or even the fact the hotel was under refurbishment - a fact never communicated to us prior to walking in the front doors - and this resulting in no bar area, dust sheets all over and paint covered builders strolling about the place and starting work right out side guests rooms at 8 o'clock on a Sunday morning, or I could say about the very unprofessional duty mangers the hotel seem to employ, maybe even the 40 minute wait for breakfast - which was in a cold and drafty main corridor as the bar/lounge area was off bounds. I'm spoilt for choice really. But the thing I will say is don't let the fact this hotel carries the trusted name of Marriott, as it truly does not come up to standard. If you were looking for a bed for the night in Durham I would recommend the Premier Inn over this place any day!

Stayed at the County Hotel for my friends wedding. She had booked over 10 rooms with over 16 people staying and unfortunately it was not very good. The hotel was under refurbishment which they failed to tell us about so there was no bar and drinks were being served in the main corridor which was cold and draughty!! My uncle was upgraded for no cost to the Castle suite with lovely facilities and castle view where as the bride and groom were charged more for a room with a view of the car park!!! And when these issues were raised with the duty manager she had a very uncooperative manner and was not sympathetic to the fact that over 80 guests had been told to meet in the bar area which was not available. Also the room standards for the guests varied considerably not to mention the cost difference. I was highly disapointed as this is supposedly a four star hotel with a good reputation, and no steps or apologies were made for the inconvience and upset caused at this stressfull time. I would not stay at this hotel again or recommend it.

I stayed at the Durham Marriott in March 2008 for 2 nights on business. Its a typical Marriott, very comfortable bed, large rooms (for the UK) and nice gym.

The staff are friendly and efficient, the bar expensive and the food reasonably good although the breakfast buffet choice is a bit limited. Very small plates as well - Marriott obviously don't want you to eat too much of the eat all you like buffet.

One slight problem in my room was discoloured water from the taps which wasn't very pleasant and despite the hotel's maintenance people giving it their best shot they never properly fixed it - although they tried hard enough in fairness.

There are some nice pubs in walking distance especially the Swan and Cygnet 200 metres or so away and the Boathouse further up the road, both are atmospheric and preferable to the hotel bar (especially price-wise) but Durham is a University town so expect pubs to be packed with students (do students ever study?).

Be aware of the car park (the Sunderland Marriott is similar) its chaos, very difficult to park and if you do get a space try getting out again!

In summary, its a nice hotel, in the centre of town with plenty of nearby pubs and restaurants. The staff are friendly and helpful and its got a good gym, just don't bring your car.

Just returned from a two night stay at this Hotel. Have stayed here on previous ocassions and have to say the usual high service levels seem to have dipped slightly.

Check in was ok although for both nights I was there, I couldn't find a parking space in the car park and had to find somewhere on the road to leave the car.

Room was OK but no more than that. Damp patches on the ceiling in the bathroom not the most attractive sight. Also, the complimentary shower gel left in the room had obviously been used before as some was missing.

Cannot fault the bed but a lot of noise filtered through from room above when trying to sleep. Usual buffet style breakfast - lots of choice but not the most energentic staff you will ever encounter and still a ridiculous £15 charge for Internet Access. When will English hotels learn (its even FREE in McDonalds these days!!)

Overall, would stay there again as the location is great but they really need a bit of a shake up to get back to the standards expected from a Marriott.

I had been booked by work to stay at the Ramside Hall, but due to previous experiences would have rather slept in the car or under a box on the riverside.

However, work managed to book me into this hotel. Brilliant hotel, the nicest I have used in Durham, great helpful staff and centrally located. The new interface in the rooms for pc's etc is outstandingly useful.

The only drawback is parking, but even then leave your keys with the staff and they'll sort it out for you.
