A while ago, there were beautiful sofas near the entrance, and in the lounges. They were in beautiful fabrics with bright modern cushions. This made not only a welcome, but also made you feel that you were in a hotel that was a "cut above others" - the design had impact.
Oh dear .......................... these have all been removed, and replaced by mostly chairs in the same muddy, uninteresting colour. WHAT A SHAME. It's no longer welcoming and smart.

We stayed here for a night for a friends birthday party in Durham. The hotel is really well placed to explore Durham, being virtually at the start of the walk up to the Castle, cathedral and main shops. It's also easy to get to off the main roads into Durham, so handy for access as well.

Parking is interesting though, the car park costs £5 a night and was extremely busy when we stayed. We got the last space in the car park, so my advice is to arrive earlier rather than later to ensure a space. It's also pretty tight, so the larger your car the more fun getting into a space! You can put a ticket in the car and stay after the check out time on the day you leave if you wish, or park in one of the other car parks in Durham.

The hotel felt cosy and the staff were extremely helpful. The rooms are a little on the small side, but well appointed and the bathroom is excellent with a good shower. The beds are also comfortable and with a relatively firm mattress, and we had no noise issues when we stayed.

We ordered room service for a snack before we went out for the evening, and the quality of the food and speed of service was excellent. Breakfast was also extremely good, with a variety of options including the traditional full English buffet.

All in all an excellent location in Durham, and a great hotel to opt for, especially given how close it is to the centre. Just arrive early enough to get the car parked.

Many other reviewers point to the fabric of the hotel needing to be spruced up in order to receive five-out-of-five ... and they're right. The staff are very, very helpful and thoroughly professional and as a result, there is a very nice atmosphere in the hotel. Service is efficient and effective in all areas, from check-in to bar and restaurant, and they go that little 'extra mile' that makes a stay so pleasant. The bed we slept on was huge and very comfortable and the room was clean -
although
those who sleep lightly may wish to take ear-plugs as the doors of many rooms close rather noisily. Car parking was good with a charge of 5 pounds per night. The hotel is located very close to the centre yet is not too noisy at night from trafiic and passers-by. Breakfast was pretty good - I would prefer the coffee to be stronger and bacon to be grilled, but it was perfectly palatable.

Visited the Durham Marriott Hotel Royal County in late February for overnight stay.

Upon arriving at the hotel, I was welcomed by a member of staff who offered me a complimentary glass of wine and/or canape. After a 6 hour car journey this was a very welcome sight!

The reception staff were fantastic - very welcoming & helpful. Check in was a breeze & within a couple of minutes of arriving I was already heading towards my room.

The room was exactly what I was hoping for - warm, welcoming & unbelievably clean. A little smaller than other Marriott rooms I've been to, but this was an overnight stay for business so it wasn't an issue - I wasn't going to have an improptu 5 a side football game in the room! Bed & pillows were great too.

Had breakfast in the morning which again was great. Everything very fresh & excellent quality.

Next time I'm up in Durham, I'll definitely be staying here.

Always try and stay at the marriott as it has a great location. Always friendly and helpful staff and I love the spa. Prefer the original part of the hotel as the rooms are nicer but the extension part has views over the river which is lovely. All in all a consistently good experience every time.

We stayed here as a treat for my partners 50th birthday. On the morning I rang the hotel to check everything was in order. I mentioned my partners birthday to the member of staff who turned out to be Stuart the reception manager. When we arrived later that day Stuart was waiting for us and had the special treat of an upgraded room with a lovely bottle of wine for no extra charge. I thought this was such a thoughtful touch and the suite was wonderful. It made our stay at the hotel very special. Thank-you :)

Room Tip: Just ask the staff I am sure they will be helpful

I've stayed here three times over the last couple of years, and it has been consistently good. I regularly stay at Marriotts in various different cities, and I must say that this one is perhaps not up to the usual Marriott standard - the common areas have a slightly tired feeling, and whilst the staff are certainly welcoming, a few of them look a little scruffy (ill-fitting, badly pressed uniforms). However, the rooms are certainly up to the usual Marriott standard - decent size, very clean, good bathroom and well-provided with tea, coffee etc. I haven't eaten in the restaurant so can't comment on breakfast; the bar is ok, although a bit short on seating - we had to sit outside in the foyer area for a late evening drink as all the seats were taken.

Overall I would recommend this hotel - it's very central and easy to walk to anywhere in central Durham within a few minutes.
