Stayed for 1 night, booked through booking.com.
Great location right in the centre by the river. 10min walk at most to the Cathedral, shopping &etc.
Very good service from the beginning including a glass of wine over check-in. Check-in itself was very quick.
Room (River view) was excellent. Very clean, plenty spacious and good quality furnishings. Bed was huge and very comfortable. Bathroom was a little dated and the shower feeble, which was a bit of a let down really.
Used the leisure centre in the evening. Very nice. Large pool (for a hotel) which was clean and warm. Steam room and sauna with plunge pool.
Staff at the hotel were very helpful with maps and recommendations for places to eat (there are surprisingly few in Durham).
Breakfast was the standard hotel affair with a buffet. Good selection and they had a egg station where the chef did a delicious omelette.
Checkout was speedy.

Over all an excellent stay in a perfectly located hotel. The only thing I didn't like way having to pay £5 for car parking. If I've paid for the room why should I pay again to park to use it? They really should abolish this.

Room Tip: Riverview rooms are better.

Stayed for two nights. Paid in full with Tesco vouchers.
On arriving at check in we were offered a glass of wine which is a nice touch. We were directed to our rooms which we were surprised was in a building at bottom of the car park! However on entering the room it was excellent. Very large with additional seating area and enormous 7 foot bed. All room facilities, bed linen etc very good quality.
Breakfast very good and staff all extremely helpful.
If we stayed in durham again I would definitely stay here. It is a very short walk from all bars restaurants and shops and close to Cathedral and river Wear.

Visited on a Saturday for afternoon tea to celebrate a 60th birthday. Despite booking online and phoning the hotel to confirm the booking (and also increase the number of people attending from the 15 booked online to 18 people) when we arrived at 3pm we were told they had no record of our booking. All 18 of us were left to stand in a corridor for around 30 minutes while our table was prepared. Some other guests arriving were being given drinks and nibbles at reception but we were offered nothing. There looked to be some lovely areas to sit for afternoon tea but as our booking had been lost our table was set up in the corner of a room, opposite a bar, which was disappointing. When finally being taken to our table we then waited another 20 minutes for our afternoon tea. When it arrived the sandwiches were stale, cream cakes not quite defrosted enough and some items were missing as they had been dropped on the floor on the way from the kitchen to our table. For a 4 star hotel I expected great customer service and excellent quality homemade food - it was the exact opposite. After complaining we were given replacement sandwiches, upgraded to champagne afternoon tea and given a discount. However, none of this compensated for the fact that we were hoping for a special afternoon - the only thing that made it special was the great family and friends we shared it with. The hotel manager also offered to call us on the Monday once he had investigated what had happened to our booking - we're still waiting for that phone call.

I have been staying at the County since I was 3 years old. You could say I know it rather well and have seen it go through many changes. Unfortunately, it is no longer the hotel it used to be. My last experience confirmed all my worst fears. Our dinner booking had been 'lost' and we were told we would have to wait for a table even though I could see empty tables. There was no one to speak to and no one cared. We left and we will never return.

We were booked in for afternoon tea for 18 so u would expect a happy welcome but we were not. They had lost our booking so there was nothing set up even tho we produced proof and confirmation of the booking it all still seemed a inconvenient we were there. They set the table up right next to the door where a gale force wind was blowing though which we kept on closing and they kept on opening it. Also when we were seated some people had stated they didn't like salmon so could they change the sandwich selection which was fine for 1 person but when others asked the waiter just walked off ignoring there request. When the food did arrive there were items missing which had been dropped on the floor the sandwiches were stale cakes all shop bought the chocolate eclairs were still frozen in the middle the strawberry tart base was savoury not sweet which made it inedible. The complaints couldn't stop we were offered a upgrade to champagne afternoon tea and 25% off our bill but that couldn't even prevent me from returning or suggesting anyone give them a try. The staff were dreadful loud brass not what u would expect from a 4star hotel, there was no elegance sophistication or style that you expect from afternoon tea we were not made to feel welcome or special. This hotel needs a massive over hall I've been to may functions there and this has to be the worst. The hotel used to have a very good reputation but I think they have let this slip a great deal and I do hope they can make some changes soon then we might return !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
