We were picked up at home by private car and taken to the Epsom Coaches departure lounge to await all other holiday makers going on the 5 day tour to Durham,Hartlepool Experience and the wonderful Open Air Living Museum at Beamish. We were staying at The Marriott Royal County Hotel in the heart of Durham. The hotel was second to none for cleanliness, helpful and polite staff throughout our stay, excellent spacious rooms all we had hoped for in a Marriott Hotel! Breakfast was a special time of day in that there was everything you could have asked for to choose from and the eggs were cooked to order whilst you helped yourself to the rest of your full english breakfast, marvellous service and all piping hot and freshly cooked! The evening dinners were just as plentiful and excellent quality nothing was too much trouble for the staff! We were certainly made to feel very welcome at this lovely hotel! Wifi is totally free in all public areas but they do charge if using in your room so use it free in the public areas very spacious and private! Swimming pool, jaccuzzi, steam room, relaxing areas! real ale sold in the bar and lots of lovely local places all around. Literally outside the door a few paces and into Durham to enjoy leisurely all that Durham offers! A perfect holiday from start to finish! Then Epsom coaches bring all aboard their very spacious coaches safely back to Epsom to pick up their chauffeured driven cars to take us back to our own doorstep! We just didnt want it to end, a perfect holiday! Thank you Epsom Coaches and thank you all at the Marriott Royal County Hotel Durham! Carol & Don Hiscock

Very nice hotel and I got a large room with two big beds. Free wifi not available in rooms (just reception area) and would have given 5 stars. Only LAN availble in rooms. The breakfast area was also very nice.

I've stayed here before and the pool and jacuzzi were broken and said I wouldn't come back. But my company booked me in again whilst I was in Durham.

I was allocated room 129 which took a while to find. The room had a window which overlooked a another building which was quite close and I could see the car park at one side. So the room seemed dark and dingy. Room size was ok and bathroom quite big.

Breakfast was good with a good selection of hot and cold food.

Room service was very expensive but was ok.

Didn't eat in the hotel restaurant as quite expensive and not value for money.

Housekeeping replenishments were mean. In the 3 nights I was there, none of the shampoos were replaced after using one and on my second. I ate the free biscuit and this was never replaced.

The pool and the jacuzzi were working and used them a couple of times whilst there.

For £80 a night, it wasn't value for money and not a great standard that you would expect from Marriott. There were no feedback forms but did mention my gripes to the reception staff when checking out.

There are lots of restaurants in the town, so go for a walk and eat out.

Although this hotel is in a good location in the centre of Durham , it is sadly tired and in need of an update. My room was too hot and the bathroom was tired ( taps didn't work properly, the bath was stained). The hotel staff seemed to need more training, they tried to be pleasant but didn't seem to know what they were doing.

Firstly, it's worth saying that the staff were extremely welcoming and friendly - ten out of ten for that. Also, the hotel is perfectly situated for a quick walk into town and the cathedral. However, this is a rather tired four star and the rates I paid were very steep considering the accommodation. Night one we had two rooms (king size rooms) - one was a very nicely appointed room with a massive bed. The other room was considerably smaller (two single beds instead of the double which was what I had requested), but had the same furniture in it as the larger room (also same things like hairdryer, ironing board and iron, trouser press, television etc.). It would be an understatement to say the smaller room was cramped. The bathrooms in both rooms were spotlessly clean, but here again there was a size difference - in the bigger bedroom there was a separate shower cubicle whereas in the smaller there was a shower attachment over the bath. I actually don't have an issue with either room but do have an issue with the fact that I was charged the same rate for both, which was £225 per night. It's quite clear that what is provided in the rooms enable all the right boxes to be ticked, but I did feel that it was stretching a point a bit to charge the same for the two rooms and, in particular, that £225 for the smaller room was a bit of a ripoff. I was aware that hotel rates tend to increase during certain times of the university year such as graduation or when freshers arrive (happens elsewhere too, so I am told), and as far as the Durham Marriott is concerned, I don't think it unreasonable that there is some premium placed on its convenience to the city centre. However, when it comes to rooms, I think facilities AND size should count.

Room Tip: Room 218 is lovely, but 219 is very small

What a fantastic short break in Durham ,Hotel lovely, staff very friendly, room two double beds with river view was great, only negative was the very narrow bath with little hand held shower head not that impressive for Marriott.Otherwise everything great.

Room Tip: If travelling with kids choose a room with two double beds, loads of space.

Selected this hotel based on Tripadvisor reviews and not disappointed. Good location minutes from Durham town centre with parking at £5 per overnight stay. We had a room change because one lift was out of action , we booked a supreme at £119 room only per night and ended up in a suite -room 123 - without asking. Excellent reception experience from Chris who took it upon himself to change the room and help us with our luggage.
The room had comfortable settee and armchair in a separate area from the bedroom and a clean and spacious bathroom. The bed was enormous and very comfortable.
Breakfast at £15.50 was fresh and a wide selection on offer, the staff all very helpful. Thought the portion size of side orders at dinner was mean and not good value for money. This, and the less than fresh tasting pastries at breakfast are the only negatives we experienced in our three night stay

Room Tip: Can recommend room 123 as comfortable and convenient but no view unless you want to keep an eye on y...
