“lovely stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2013

Stayed at this hotel for two nights 5-7th August, After reading other reviews, i feel that i stayed at different hotel, Yes the hotel is looking a little dated, and in need of some updating, but it was very clean, wonderful friendly staff, lovely breakfast great choice something for everyone, the sauna in the leisure centre wasnt working but they have turned the solarium into a sauna until its fixed. Please try this hotel for yourself, what it lacks in updated decor it more than makes up for in excellent staff.

Room Tip: all rooms seem ok

This hotel is in a good position, that is all I can say is good about it, the character has gone, the bar has no atmosphere, the rooms are very tired and need updating. The breakfast was cold. Durham has some other lovely hotels that are worth looking at.

Stayed here on a busy weekend (Miner's gala) and they were clearly very busy. Nevertheless, every staff member I met was helpful and friendly and kind and pleasant- really very nice people! However, the hotel building itself was a disappointment. It was a super hot weekend and the air con in our room was broken- just an old fan was left to provide some sort of (noisy) cool air. The shower was cold and weak and the room was very dated and not that clean. The pool facilities were also lacking- the hot tub was quite dirty, the sauna was broken and out of order, two of the showers did not work and one that did work then wouldn't turn off and I had to go and get the life guard to come in and turn it off (he was lovely and had to get very wet while doing it!) which meant I had to go out into the pool in just a towel to get help... Not ideal!
The following morning the breakfast was nice- a buffet, but then going to the lobby restroom- ALL the sinks were broken! I kid you not, they had alcohol gel to wash hands as they were all broken... Just a bit disappointing given the amount paid to stay somewhere "nice". I would sadly go somewhere a bit more modern next time, or stay somewhere a bit cheaper!

we stayed here for an overnight stay. The room was great, bed was huge. The staff were excellent, very friendly and helpful. Had an evening meal there too - it was superb. Had the fish and chips - lovely and crispy, beautifully presented. Swam in the pool - great, hot tub too. Again the staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. All in all a fabulous stay - we will be returning. The city was magnificent - people really friendly and helpful. Sights great.

Room Tip: Our room was great - don't know about others

We spent five nights at this hotel while visiting the Lindisfarne Gospels Exhibition at Durham Cathedral and exploring nearby sites related to Bede, St Cuthbert and other heroes of the Anglo-Saxon church. It was a very pleasant stay. Our room was comfortable and spacious, if with a daggy view of the car park, and service was friendly and mostly competent, if sometimes a little vague at breakfast. We enjoyed a good meal in the restaurant as a couple, although two meals we ate in a larger group seemed to challenge the kitchen a bit. The variety and quality of the breakfast offerings was good. The hotel is a short walk up to the cathedral and castle through the old town, so very well located for tourists.
A couple of negatives were the lack of complimentary bottled water in our room - this was provided everywhere we stayed in Britain except some chain hotels - the ridiculous charges for in-room wifi (although the free wifi in public areas was very good) and the charge for car parking in the large car park through which you enter the hotel. Good indoor pool and spa facilities, if over-chlorinated. On the whole, though, a good choice.

Room Tip: Rooms in the area beside the river are best if you like a pleasant aspect

Just returned from a long weekend break. Lovely hotel, excellent location being just a short stroll to the centre. Staff very friendly. Parking let it down, on arrival on a busy Saturday afternoon there were no spaces, it transpires they let shoppers use the car park as a pay and display consequently no room for actual guests. The concierge was very helpful though and eventually found us a space to park and was very helpful throughout the stay. Rooms were very big and spacious and clean. Wifi is available free in the lobby and can be used in the rooms for a fee.
Breakfast was very nice, lots of choice.
Overall pleasant stay

Room Tip: Avoid Saturday afternoons to check in as may find it difficult to park.
