“Nice Hotel with great location”
Reviewed 2 January 2014

The location of this hotel for exploring Durham is perfect! My room was huge, big comfy bed and with a seating area. The bathroom was again huge, not very modern but clean.

I was attending an event at the event, so lots of us all checking in at the same time, yet check-in was a straightforward and friendly affair. Food was pretty good to average. Breakfast was pretty standard.

I would stay again and recommend to people visiting the area.

We visited in mid December to meet up with friends on the Saturday and took advantage of a weekend special of £199 for 2 nights, breakfast and dinner on the first night.
Well dinner was superb, we thought we would have a set menu to choose from, but we could select from the whole menu. Food was excellent and had we paid would have been c £90 for the 2 of us. Well located and close to the City centre. Breakfast is one of the best we have had, all fresh, excellent service and a great egg/omelette chef.
Would definitely return again and highly recommend.

We booked a Christmas package break including a disabled access room for my parents but when we arrived we discovered that they had been allocated an ordinary room which would have been totally unsuitable and we would have had to cancel the trip. Apparently, there had been a breakdown in communications between the events organiser at the hotel and the reservations people. Fortunately, the staff at the hotel sorted it out and my parents got their room.

The staff at this hotel are the best I've ever come across. They were cheerful and friendly throughout our stay and nothing was too much trouble.

The food during our stay was first class . Only complaint concerns the lifts (as mentioned by others). One lift was out of order throughout our stay and another one was playing up and was eventually taken out of service as well but fortunately this was as we were leaving. The Manager said that all the lifts will be replaced in the New Year.

Like all Marriott's the bar prices are horrendous. £5.50 for a bottle of Newcastle Brown? While wines were expensive they are about the same as similar standard hotels.
They now offer free WiFi in public areas and this seemed to extend to bedrooms as well once you have logged on in a public area for a 24 hour session. Hopefully they will eventually offer free WiFi throughout.

The location of the hotel is superb. Just across from the Elvet Bridge which leads to the main part of the City.

The Leisure complex looked good but I didn't go in despite my good intentions (purely out of laziness)

We had such a disappointing experience this afternoon at the Royal County. We booked in for high tea but the tea was cold, one of the cups was cracked, the bread was stale, the sandwiches were interesting! Cream cheese in some, cream cheese and cucumber in the others.....and half a slice of bread for each sandwich was a little too much, stale or not. The very large scones had been microwaved so as they cooled they hardened really well. However, the staff were great, understanding and sympathetic about the 'low' tea and did not charge us for the experience.

We stayed in a supreme room. The room was lovely with tea making facilities a separate shower and bath and a small sitting area. The room was clean with plenty of cupboards and 2 tvs. The only issue was the flashing smoke alarms in the room which at night were a bit annoying. The spa area was lovely but not many beds. The breakfast and bars were good with v friendly staff. All in all a nice relaxing stay
