We told the staff when booking that our booking was to celebrate our ten year anniversary, and asked for a nice view. We were actually upgraded to a top floor suite, with great views of the City and the Castle. The room was exceptional and had a spa bath, plus we were greeted with a bottled of chilled wine in the room. The staff were very helpful and the weekend was wonderful. Would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: Ask when booking, higher rooms best.

Overall, the location is excellent - in the centre of Durham city, near to the cathedral and student areas. Full of life, bars, restaurants, lots of history.

Breakfast at the hotel was excellent, lots of choice and friendly staff. Waffles made to order which were very nice.

Staff seem a little obsessed with whether or not you had swiped your credit card at checkin for extras, you are asked every day at the bar, each time you go to the bar, gets a little irritating and seems untrusting.

Nice location, some staff training would help to improve customer service.

Room Tip: select 'river side' view - little awkward to get to from reception but worth it for the view

Lovely weekend in Durham at this hotel, with staff that went above and beyond to help, looking up chip shops in Seaham and printing off maps with the route. Room 242 very spacious with separate sitting area, but the bed was a little low in the middle, resulting in some nocturnal rolling problems.
Highlight of the stay: Housekeeping noticed we were celebrating an event and left us a celebration bun!

Room Tip: The soundproofing on the street facing room was impeccable, especially noticeable when the cathedral...

The Marriott in Durham is situated exactly where you would want it to be - on the edge of the old city, overlooking the river Wear. You cross the road to ancient Elvet Bridge and walk 10 mins max to Palace Green and the Cathedral, Castle, Hospital and library. In the mornings the riverbank walk below Elvet Bridge offers a beautiful 30 minute exercise walk around the "peninsula". The hotel exudes old world charm with modern conveniences. There is enough parking at a modest cost, and an in-house Starbucks. Rooms are lovely. Mine had a view over the river and up to the cathedral (352 - best room in the house). Super.

Room Tip: overlooking the river.

When I'm on business in Durham the Marriott is my preferred choice of hotel.
The rooms are spacious and well appointed, the staff are really friendly, and the location is in a quieter part of town, but walking distance to the town and attractions. The food is excellent with plenty of choice for breakfast, and there is also a Starbucks incorporated inside the hotel. Parking is subsidised for guests, but arrive early to get a space.

Room Tip: Room 123 is a suite in a quiet location. Room 302 is a deluxe room in a quiet location with excellen...

Having spent £300 for my husband, daughter and I to share a room here for three nights, I was expecting everything to be of a relatively high standard. But while they get a lot of things right at the Durham Marriott Hotel Royal County, it falls short in a few areas.

High points:

- Lovely staff at reception, keen to help in any way.
- Bed linen and towels spotlessly clean, comfy bed and fluffy pillows
- Fantastic location - easily accessible by walking to anywhere in the city centre
- Super swimming pool, with pool-side chairs and loungers, and a wide range of papers etc.

Low points:

- A lift door which kept shutting as you tried to enter it - leading to sore arms, and a slight panic as you try to get in and out in time!
- A hugely annoying smoke alarm directly above the bed, which has two red lights that flick on and off every 3 seconds (visible as soon as it's dark). Apparently this is to inform us that the alarm is, in fact, working (having stayed in numerous hotels all over the world, and never encountered this before, I have to wonder how those other establishments are coping . . .)
- Problems with room temperature: too hot (despite turning the heating down to zero), but you couldn't open the window as the noise from the traffic was a bit loud.
- Our toilet was very difficult to flush (my 11-year-old couldn't manage it at all), but when we asked for maintenance to look at it, they left a note to say it was working fine. It wasn't.
- It's over-priced. How anybody in this day and age can charge for WiFi is beyond me. £15 per 24 hours is just unacceptable. As is £10.50 for a bagel and cream cheese for the room service breakfast!

Did we have a pleasant stay at this hotel? Yes. Would I go back? I'm afraid not.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review and for your kind comments in particular those regarding our reception hosts.

I was sorry to read that you were disappointed with some areas of the hotel and on this occasion did not meet with your expectations.

We are always striving to continuously improve our hotel and facilities and I am delighted to confirm that we are currently in the process of refurbishing our ground floor public space, which includes a lift refurbishment commencing on 6th May 2014.

I do hope you will return to the hotel and you will be able to see the improvement’s we are making.

Warm Regards
Des Caldwell

Travelling up from the South the hotel is only minutes from the A1 and has a great location being situated next to the river and is only a 5 minute stroll away from the centre of Durham and the Castle/Cathedral. Check in was smooth and although we were early for check in we passed the time in the very handy Starbucks which is a great addition to the hotel. I'd read some mixed reviews about the rooms and the interior of the hotel but all I can say is that some people must have very high expectations. The room we had was large, comfortable, well appointed and spotlessly clean with a great view over the river. I didn't use the bar or dining room at night but noticed that the bar and public areas were being refurbished, nevertheless there some nice areas to sit and have a drink. The highlight of the hotel for me was the breakfast and the waiting staff. The buffet breakfast was massive with everything you could want in both hot and cold ranges and the staff were an absolute pleasure, very friendly and nothing was too much trouble, They all seemed generally interested in what we had planned and were happy to tell us about places to visit and places to eat. In fact all the staff were very pleasant and everybody we met said good morning or good evening. Many 5* London hotels could learn a lot from the staff at the Durham Marriott. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and will definitely be returning.

Room Tip: Riverside rooms are probably best.
