“Well positioned but scary lift”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

Spent two nights and was well positioned for Central Durham. Easy to walk everywhere, Cathedral, river, town, restaurants etc.. Room was comfortable and front desk friendly and helpful. But... Get the lift sorted, the door would only open half way and you had to push to get it to open fully to get in. It made a terrible noise and we were scared that we would be stuck but being with an 80 year old, no choice but to use it.
There was a gym but didn't use it. Don't know about Spa but can't clear the rating system once accidentally touched nor was there a kids activities.

The royal county is somewhat old in terms of overall look and feel, however has a great ambiance about it...

With the best location for city sightseeing and river walks, the hotel enjoys lovely views of the river.. Hotel is also very convenient for university visitors.

Rooms are outdated and could benefit from an upgrade. ..

The county is the hotel for us every time we visit Durham....

We booked afternoon tea on a Sunday afternoon after my sisters hen do and what a lovely way to round off the weekend. The waitress was kind so helpful and couldn't do enough for us. The menu had changed since we booked online and she asked the manager if we could still be charged the old price which was brilliant. We got so much for our money and the food was delicious. The sandwiches were tasty and the scones were freshly baked. We were all really happy that we had chosen to go the Marriott for afternoon tea and would certainly go back again in the future.

The good: a warm welcome by attentive staff, superb breakfast,
The bad: none of the three ice machines functioned, no air conditioning in the rooms, the staff's inability to turn off the appalling music at breakfast.
The tired: the tired elevators made one enter only with trepidation, the lowered ceilings in the hallways were stained and ill fitting. Both the furnishings and appointments in the rooms were dated.
However, that said, the genuine attentiveness of all the staff helped make our stay a pleasant one.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review.
I was sorry to read that the music in the Restaurant during breakfast was not to your taste and the ice machines were out of order during your stay.
We are currently undergoing some refurbishment to the hotel including two of our guest elevators so I hope that when you return to the hotel you will see an improvement.
I am delighted that you found our staff to be warm and attentive and I will be pleased to share your comments with them.
Thank you once again for your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel when you are next in the area.
Warm regards
Des Caldwell

Just returned from a 2 night stay - we chose this hotel as we were taking our 8 year old to see 1 Direction in Sunderland. We hadn't visited Durham before & was pleased to find the hotel ideally situated with just a short walk into the town. The hotel was immaculate, we stated in a superior double double room - lovely as you would expect from a Marriott hotel but it was the staff that really stood out! They could not have been more friendly or helpful. Although we didn't eat an evening meal in the hotel - if the breakfast is anything to go buy I am now sorry we didn't - really nice with a fantastic choice & again nothing too much trouble - the waiter even printed out route planner for a local attraction. We would definitely stay again .

Came to the Marriott on Thursday 22nd may, although it appeared the booking for afternoon tea was not on the hotels system the staff were exceptional. We were seated within the restaurant and although it was quiet it was ideal for me and my boyfriend to talk amongst ourselves, the staff ensured that our visit was a pleasant one at that, and always checking back on us and asking if we needed anything else. The price was reasonable too, you honestly wouldn't think that what was on offer would fill you but we couldn't move! All in all in was a pleasant visit and we would do it again, and most definitely recommend it to friends!

This hotel is the best location for Cathedral and town. Good quality accommodation and food. Bedrooms have huge Queen beds and modern furniture. Quieter rooms overlooking courtyard car park. Would strongly recommend parking at hotel at 5pound/night.

Room Tip: Bedrooms on 2nd or 3rd floor overlooking courtyard car park.
