A nice clean hotel, with helpful staff in a very central location. The breakfasts were good and the pool area was excellent. Our room was a bit cramped though and if the wardrobe door was open you couldn't get passed at all. Would definately go back and would quite happily recommend it.

We stayed in the Royal County for a few nights in July. Our room, in the newer part, had a great view of the Cathedral. The room itself was spacious, clean and comfortable. the television was a bit ancient by today's standards, but was fine.
We only had breakfast in the hotel, which was more than adequate if not spectacular. The bar was comfortable if a little pricey by the standards of the rest of Durham. The Leisure Centre was first class; clean, modern and well equipped.
The real highlight of the hotel was the staff; from reception to barstaff to cleaners; everyone went out of their way to be polite and friendly. I appreciate it when someone takes the time to say "Hello", when they meet you in the hall, the foyer, the lift etc.
Overall, a pleasant stay and worth a return visit. By the way, it's also a great base for exploring a very interesting part of England.

This is the second time that my husband and I have visited this hotel. On both occasions we have used our Tesco clubcard tokens. The rooms were very nice, and very clean, but this time our room was very dark as it faced a brick wall, could not leave the window open at night as we were very close to a noisy air con outlet. I got the impression that because we had Tesco vouchers we were not given the best room. The breakfast was not that good, on both mornings the milk had run out next to the cereals, there were no clean glasses for juice. Lots of things would run out and people were left standing around waiting for them to be re-filled. We didn't eat in the hotel, as we found last year it was dreadful and they could not find a corkscrew!.

Arrived at the hotel, we where pleased to find that the carparking was free which was an added bonus.

The reception staff got the job done with checking in, but not the most pleasant, sometimes a smile goes along way, we didnt feel very welcome, so first impression wasnt great.

Our room was very cosy and imaculate, very homely but still quite modern, the bath tub was lovely also the bathroom area, plasma television also and ice bucket which can be filled up in the corridor which is self service.
The view wasnt spectacular of the carpark, so i would definately recommend booking a riverview room.

We didnt eat in the hotel restaurant but the menu looked very tasty, although i cant comment as we didnt eat here.
We did however have breakfast the following morning which was quite nice, food was lovely, original fry up available such as bacon, sausage etc, aswell as continental.

The pool was lovely although the jacuzzi was closed which i was quite dissapointed with as we where looking forward to that part, but overall the pool area was lovely, nice sauna, steam room etc.

I would PROBABLY return to this hotel although i would be slightly sceptical as the service wasnt brilliant and we didnt feel very welcome when we checked in.

We have stayed on a few occassions here, most recently for our wedding anniversary. We find the hotel comfortable, relaxing and have found the staff very pleasant. We didnt eat in the hotel (apart from Breakfast- which was pretty standard), because there are so many lovely restaurants in Durham to try.
On this recent trip we had a riverside room and i would recommend that you ask for a room in the new part of the hotel, as on one occassion we were allocated a room in the old part, which was very cramped and tired. The new rooms are spacious, clean and welcoming.
Our only complaint was to do with the very loud housekeeping staff, who decided to catch up with each others weekend activities right outside our room at 7.30am on Sunday morning. It was our first break without our kids, and so a long lie was much in demand. We mention it at reception and the following morning we were met with silence and a very welcome long lie!
