“Lovely Hotel - Great Location in the centre of Durham”
Reviewed 25 January 2010

My boyfriend and I stayed in this hotel for a weekend during January.

I went to check in while my boyfriend parked the car. The staff on reception were very friendly and helpful. The car park was small but we managed to get a spot and it was a free car park to customers staying at the hotel.

The room itself was quiet small but very nicely decorated and the bed was really comfortable! I fell asleep as soon as my head touched the pillow! The room was clean and had all the things you would expect for a modern hotel room (tea/coffee making facilities, hairdryer, ice bucket etc).

The location of the hotel is perfect - about a 2 minute walk into town, but far enough out so that its quiet!

We used the leisure club facilites and found them to be fantastic! We went on the Friday night and it was really quiet - we used the swimming pool, steam room, sauna and jacuzzi. The staff at the leisure centre were helpful as well, offering change for lockers when required.

The breakfast was very good - hot and cold buffet which had everything you could want!

We would stay there again if we are visiting Durham

This was such a lovely surprise. Our last stay in the area - staying at a different hotel - had been a disaster, so the Marriott in Durham came as a huge relief. First, they had on-site parking (albeit limited) which was useful and not wholly expected in a hotel situated so close to the centre of a World Heritage site. The doorman was very friendly and proactive, coming to our aid as we drove round trying to find a space and advising us where we could park. The main doors, leading as they do, directly from the car park, does the hotel less than justice. However, the Scottish receptionist who booked us in was extremely friendly, efficient and welcoming.

The rooms were quite small, though well furnished and comfortable. The bath in the en suite bathroom was much longer than I expected from the size of the bathroom. The soaps etc had a delicious lemongrass scent which I loved. We had a drink in the bar before going out, which was pleasant with good service. We were, however, slightly surprised that they didn't have a cocktail menu. The dinner menu looked tempting, but we had already booked dinner at a restaurant in the city, a very short and pleasant walk away.

Next morning we found there was only one sachet of ordinary (non-decafinated) coffee on the tea tray, which was an oversight as there was two of tea, etc, but as my husband drinks tea in the morning we didn't bother to phone for an additional sachet which I am sure would have been supplied on request. The breakfast was good, with tea, coffee, fruit juices, cereal, choice of full English breakfast, cheese, ham, smoked salmon, toast and pastries. The supplies were kept topped up and the waitress supplied English mustard quickly when asked. The dining room itself was very pleasant, long and fairly narrow but divided into a succession of smaller 'room' areas which made it feel more intimate.

The only slight drawback was that on departure we were charged for four breakfasts although there were only three of us in two double rooms. However, the mistake was rectified promptly when my husband pointed it out.

We will certainly stay there again when we return to Durham.

We stayed on a two night Tesco Clubcard deal. We were given an upgrade, the room consisted of a lounge area, three seater sofa arm chair, coffee table, desk and large flat screen TV. The bedroom had two double beds (Marriott beds are heavenly) and a large flat screen TV, plenty of channels to choose from. Tea/coffee and biscuits supplied. Nice bathroom, plenty of hot water, and good heating system, which was very welcome on a freezing snowy day.
We had a good three course dinner + coffee, very good value at £22, we paid £17.50 for a bottle of wine. Breakfast consisted of the usual English, cheeses, meats, smoked salmon and pastries, very plentiful, help yourself to toast and bread .
The hotel has a super warm pool, gym and beauty salon.
The staff were all very pleasant and helpful, we found this hotel to be very good and worth a second visit in the future. The parking may be a bit of a problem at busy times.

Durham's a beautiful city and I've used this Marriot Hotel often as a good place to meet up and have very long lunches with friends. For the first time, a friend and I stayed a night as well and were not entirely enchanted. The room we had booked was not ready for hours, luckily we didn't want to use it and had lunch instead. Their lunches and teas are generally good and their lounges have comfy sofas to park yourself on whilst eating and chatting. When we did get our room sorted it was something of an expedition up the Amazon to the room via a lift designed for pixies only. But housekeeping were very prompt and good about changing all my bedding to non feathers (I'm allergic but forgot to warn them). The room was fine except for a key problem: the toilet didn't flush and couldn't be fixed. We used the wine cooler throughout the night to pour water down it to 'flush' it. Not great: we asked for some money back (the original price was £117 acommodation only for 1 night in a twin room) and were offered 10% off the room charge, then 20% after a bit of discussion. There is a restaurant which is useful in Durham, a place not blessed with restaurants but it was fairly dull food and, like the room, overpriced.

The Royal County is what I would usually expect a 3 -star large commercial hotel to be, it's not a 4-star place really, despite its apparent rating. It's very middling.

I wouldn't specifically recommend this hotel to friends but I wouldn't put them off if they needed somewhere really central to stay in Durham and I'd have to experience worse things than I did before I'd be put off using it again.

Reception staff are fabulous at this hotel - friendly and informed. We were given a room as requested overlooking the river but unfortunately the heating was faulty. Hotel changed the room without fuss or delay. Locaton of the hotel is excellent - you are right in the centre and the free parking was a bonus. A really comfortable King Size bed and a quiet room made for an excellent nights sleep. Only negative was breakfast - the buffet kept running out of items, we had a lengthy wait to get a chance to get our breakfast. Other than that a pleasant stay.

another good stay at the marriott.
excellent staff and room.
good choice in the buffet breakfast.
the bad......we parked in a disabled bay and found ourselves totally blocked in.cars parked all over the place......took 20 minutes for the hotel to locate other car owners to let us out...surely a fire hazard....spoilt the stay a little.

Turn right out of the door, cross the bridge and you're in the city center of Durham, walk to the top of the hill and you're in the city square, turn left and follow the road over the bridge and you're out of the city centre. Total time to cross the city, on foot, approx 5 mins!!

Yes, Durham must have one of the smallest city centres in the UK, but within that small space it packs in shopping and history. And right next to that space is the Marriott Royal County, well kept, well staffed and clean this is a rock solid 4 star hotel. It does everything well, but nothing brilliantly, you'll find nothing to complain about, but nothing to rave about either. However the clean rooms, good food, attentive staff and its strong location with free parking next to this supercompact city centre, does make it a very attractive proposition.

A solid 4 star hotel well recommended for a stay in this historic city...
