“Great weekend”
Reviewed 22 January 2012

Just had a great weekend in Durham, Stayed at the Three Tuns hotel Lovely hotel very clean food spot on staff very friendly. Will certainly stay again. Yes it is dated but that adds to the charm, what else would you expect from a hotel of this age

Located (with carpark) in the town centre it is ideal for an inexpensive one or two nights stay. My room was clean, comfortable, tidy and warm and there was plenty of hot water. Bar was not up to much, having no draft or bottled real ale or customers come to that, but full english breakfast was good. Staff were all very pleasant and helpful. Difficult to find by car in the dark as main sign was not illuminated and main entrance was not obvious - in fact once in the town centre I had to ask the way 4 times and was actually literally on the other side of the road from the hotel and did not notice it.

Room Tip: Ask for one in the rear of the hotel for quietness

Stayed here for a stop-over whilst travelling further North on Christmas Eve.
As some other reviews say,it does require a bit of 'spruceing-up',but I would hate to see it go all faux suede and 70's' retro' which seems to have come in to vogue.(You know, chandeliers and 'mock flock' wallpaper in purple or lime green!).It made me feel quite nostalgic and reminded me of a traditional hotel from the real 70's.
Staff were pleasant enough, the breakfast was OK and the beds were comfortable, with crisp , clean sheets, and at the price I have no complaints apart from the naff Christmas music in the restaurant at breakfast.
I would stay there again, should the necessity arise.
Do it up but keep the character!

This is the third hotel I have stayed in, in the Swallow Chain (previously Gateshead and Glasgow) and I have to say this the best.
As others have said it just requires some money spending on the decoration, however all the staff were most helpful and apologetic when the restaurant had to be closed on the evening of my visit and were quite helpful in suggesting alternative options.
The hotel was clean and was the room, the room was spacious and even with being facing the road, I did not hear any noise from the traffic.
Additionally it is very convenient for the main town centre and cathedral, literally a 5 minute walk.
Breakfast was good, a bit restricted on the buffet and waiter sevice for the cooked breakfast which was freshly prepared.
A good hotel with great helpful staff, however just requires updating in decoration

Stayed here on a package while visiting the Lumiere.
The rates are very low but as previous reviews have pointed out the hotel probably hasn't had a penny spent on it for many years. Everywhere is worn out, the carpets are threadbare, wallpaper peeling, paint chipped, wiring very suspect you get the idea.
The room was at the front and noisy, some sort of student place over the road and two bus stops so expect noise as we found late at night and early morning, but we were so tired after walking up to the Cathedral so many times we slept like a log, even with the window open. The room could have been cleaner, mouldy silicone around the bath and the grille over the bathroom extractor was filthy and obviously hadn't been cleaned for a long time.
Meals were acceptable, breakfast was better than dinner but considering the package price we paid, we couldn't really expect more.
Restaurant staff were really friendly and professional, trying very hard to do a professional job in less than perfect surroundings.
Reception staff could do with another session at the charm school.
Location of the hotel is perfect for visiting the centre of Durham.
One suggestion for the hotel, please put a sign in the car park indicating where reception is, when we arrived we dragged our cases into the function suite, passing two other couples who were just leaving having made the same mistake, I would think that everyone who arrives for the first time goes in the wrong entrance like us.

Overall the hotel is pretty good value for money. The rooms are clean and cosy and there was a decent breakfast. The staff all seem to speak some dialect of Norse but I managed with hand gestures. The only real complaint I have is the lack of free wifi. I don't know what the management think they are playing at with this. I had work to do and I didn't see why I should have to pay for the privilege of using the internet. Some of the other reviews commented on the age of the hotel decor. But for me not having free wifi is the best way of recreating that authentic 2003 travel experience.

Just had a two night stay at the Three Tuns Hotel. The location of this hotel is great - right in the centre of the city by the river. The building dates back to the 1600s. The hotel is a little tired looking and could do with some money being spent on it but for the price cant be beaten. The room was large and lovely and cosy. The cooked breakfast was fine and the service was very friendly. Excellent value and would really recommend it.
